How can we improve Microsoft Azure Analysis Services?

  1. Lower pricing tier for smaller production workloads

We are a small BI team that would love to move our AS to the cloud. At this point our data is small enough that we are using SQL Server standard. There needs to be a much lower production pricing tier for small companies like ours. These prices simply do not make sense for our size.

The request for a lower pricing tier is now complete since we introduced the new B tier SKUs. We will of course continue to review any future feedback for a broader range of SKU options where appropriate.

  2. Create a Data Gateway Manager to be used for all Cloud Services (to consolidate all other data gateways)

Currently we have these gateways, all of which require a separate VM/Machine to install for the scenario where we have in data sources on-premises (hybrid scenario). This is way too many gateways and who knows how many more we will have in the future. It takes maintenance and up-keeping of data sources, passwords, latest version installation, etc.

We should consider consolidating all gateways into a Gateway Manager where we can manage all of them on one machine/VM location. This way, we can check for versions, login/passwords, data sources, etc. and can potentially reuse data sources (shared data sources) for different…

  3. Scale out of Azure AS

Provide an easy way to set up scale out of Azure AS servers. Need to allow easy set up of load balancing and synchronization of data across servers. May need to copy data from a processing server to multiple front-end servers.

  4. Easy method for restoring/uploading existing Power Pivot/Power BI Desktop Models

One of the nicest features of on premise SSAS Tabular is the ability to ugrapde a Power Pivot model from Excel directly into SSAS. From what I've seen so far, this isn't easy in Azure since there isn't direct access to the server and file structure and normally the SSAS service account needs permissions to access the Power Pivot file's location.

  5. Support AAD authentication for Azure SQL DB datasources

Azure SQL Database supports the use of AAD authentication:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-database/sql-database-aad-authentication-configure

This authentication type is not supported when attempting to connect to an Azure SQL database from Azure Analysis Services.

I was fairly surprised to see that this authentication mechanism wasn't working between the two products. The issue has been confirmed via a support ticket with Microsoft, whom suggested raising it as an idea here.

AAS team, please add support for AAD authentication when using Azure DB as a datasource from Azure Analysis Services.

    Thank you.

  6. Data Lake Store as data source

Anaysis Services could be a great semantic layer for curated data that are stored in a Data Lake Store (typically output from Data Lake Analytics jobs).

  7. Scale up and down Azure AS server

Allow changing of pricing tier for an Azure AS server. For example, scale down from an S4 (100GB) to an S1 (25GB).

Need to be able to do this in an automated way using an ARM request, so can automate scale/down up to match peak usage user demands.

Support for ragged hierarchy display. Similar to hide member if that is in multi dim.

  10. Publish the query and model from Power BI Desktop to Azure Analysis Services

I want to use Azure Analysis Services from Power BI without developer/DBA.

I hope the query and model from Power BI Desktop to Azure Analysis Services, and connect from Power BI Desktop/Power BI Service to Azure Analysis Services.

Assuming you mean import from PBIX to Azure Analysis Services, which is now supported in the Azure AS web UI. Thanks for the feedback.

  11. Ability to use windows authentication in Excel

If we create excel template with pivot tables and then share it among users they have to input login and password for each copy. It is inconvenient.

With the latest MSOLAP drivers (14 or higher) you can select the Windows auth option in Excel.

  12. Allow Azure AD applications to be assigned as administrators

Currently only user accounts can be added as administrators of Azure Analysis Services.

It would be really useful to be able to assign registered applications as administrators - particularly for scenarios where we have build integration with VSTS and other automation scenarios.

Requiring that only user accounts can be added as admins means we wind up needing dummy user accounts in the directory.

This is supported today. The next version of SSMS will make them easier to add but you can add them today in the format “app:@”

  14. Ability to select different Azure AD instances for authentication

It would be nice if you could configure a different Azure AD tenant (or add multiple tenants) as opposed to just the default tenant under your primary Azure subscription. This would allow external facing custom applications using their own separate Azure AD tenant to take advantage of SSAS. Also integration with the b2c and b2b flavors of AD.

  15. North Europe Availabilty

This only being available in West Europe causes a bit of an issue. Data Factory is only available in North Europe hence I cannot have a modern data platform that uses DF to move data around and use Azure SSAS without moving data between data centres, are there plans to make this available in North Europe as well as the current set up does not really make a lot of sense

  17. API's to Create Modify and Process AAS models

I would like to see API's to interact with my AAS models.

Similar to the Power BI API's that are available I would love to be able to use API's to manage my AAS models.

    Various APIs work with AAS.

    - Tabular Object Model: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.analysisservices.tabular.aspx
    - Tabular Model Scripting Language: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/mt614797.aspx
