  1. Maintenance Windows on AAS

As with other hosted services, uptime and predictability are crucial for our users. We need to have a way of knowing when the server will be brought down for maintenance so we can schedule processing around it and notify our users well in advance.

The best way would be to implement maintenance windows, like SQL DWH, but a short-term fix could be to implement notifications BEFORE server downtime.

Two times in the last week, our automated nightly processing has been interrupted by "Server upgrade/restart". As this is a long-running processing and it is interrupted at the tail-end of the process,…

  2. Import Power BI Datamodels (pbix, Power Bi Service ) into Azure Analysis Services (successor of Web Designer)

The Azure Analysis Services Web designer was discontinued on March 1, 2019, leaving no option to import Power Bi desktop Files (pbix) or Datamodels from Power Bi service into Azure Analysis Services (AAS) Instance. Therefore respective new functionality is required.

  3. mac client support

Create the client side drivers required to allow macs to connect to Azure Analysis Services.

This would then allow tableau/excel users on mac to consume analysis services.

  4. Add support for service principle authentication

I'd like to be able to refresh cube partitions from within data factory.

I've got an Azure Batch process that runs a class using the AMO library, however the authentication options are limited - I can either hard code an AD username and password into the connection string, or run the application from an authorised account (which I don't think is possible in azure batch).

Support for more forms of authentication would enable cube refreshes from data factory / azure batch.

We do support service principals. The next SSMS will make them a lot easier to set in roles and we also have some client lib changes that will make them easier to use. Now you can use them by getting the token yourself and passing it in as the password on the connection string.

  5. Support ability to get the logs of queries, users who executed them, and time it took for queries to run on my AAS instance

Would like the ability to get the logs of queries, users who executed them, and time it took for queries to run on my AAS instance. I would like to keep track of this data so I can see if read performance gets worse, which users use the AAS instance the most, and which kind of queries users run so I can optimize for them, for example.

  6. system-assigned managed identity

It would be nice to allow the creation of system-assigned managed identity this would unblock the ability to use AAS to authenticate directly to a data source such as Azure SQL DB without using a user-created service principal or relying on sql authentication which uses OAuth2 credentials that expire

  7. Automate On-premise gateway installation

We're looking for a way to automate the install of the on-premise gateway to allow it to scale through automation. Passing parameters for Email, Gateway name, Recovery key, pass the recovery key to KeyVault, etc.

  8. Azure Analysis Services Automated Refresh for Excel Online

Excel Desktop PowerPivot Report connected to Azure Analysis Services Tabular model refreshing the data works in Excel Desktop.
However, when you publish this workbook to Power BI workspace (from the workbook's ribbon menu > File > Publish > Publish To Power BI) then you try to refresh the data in Excel Online it doesn't work!!!
Microsoft should fix this limitation otherwise what's the point of having a refresh capabilities for just Excel Desktop PowerPivot.
We want our end users to be able to refresh powerpivot reports Online.

  9. In SSDT's Tabular Model Explorer, arrange measures according to their display folders

This one's pretty straight forward, the current experience for managing measures in each table becomes "clunky" when you start hitting more than >100 measures. While low priority, it'd be nice to change up this experience and organize the measures into folders for a better management experience.

  10. Add an "Analyze in Power BI Desktop" button to SSDT-Tabular

Basically the same functionality as the existing "Analyze in Excel" button found in the top icon bar when developing tabular models in SSDT/VS... only tied to Power BI Desktop instead of excel.

  12. Azure Analysis Services add Firewall option

Firewall option for Azure Analysis Services (SaaS) is not available. It would be very helpful to convince some of the customers that is skeptical to use SaaS services because of Public Endpoint. Probably can apply the same solution as Firewall on Azure SQL Server.

  13. Ability to share common components (tables, perspectives etc) between tabular models

Having the ability to have a re-usable shared library of components would help to:
    - Reduce the time taken to develop and maintain components used across multiple models
    - Encourage the development of smaller, more focussed models
    - Reduce the memory overhead for common shared objects. For example, where models are hosted within the same Analysis Services instance shared components could be loaded once in a ‘central’ model, this single repository of data could then be referenced by other models hosted within the same analysis services instance.

We’d need the ability to link the central tables and resulting objects into…

  14. Azure Analysis Services Model as Data Source in Azure Analysis Services.

I would like to be able to call an Azure Analysis Services Model as a source for my Azure Analysis Services model. We have models on prem that call each other. I'm trying to shift them to the cloud. But apparently they cannot call each other as sources there.

  15. Get visuals back after importing pbix file

After importing a PBIX file, I have to rebuild my visuals, would be great if you could get a pbix back after importing that has the same visuals but now connected to the new AAS model.

  16. Outer join relationship

Sometimes you have a business requirement where there is a measure in a Sales Order Header fact table but then you need to join to a table of zero-to-many salespeople associated with the order. The business would like to see the sales measure repeated when there are multiple salespeople. But the business would like to show a blank salesperson (without losing the sales order header row) when there are zero salespeople associated with an order. Essentially this is a left outer join to a table.

Certainly you can write a custom DAX query to do this with the NATURALLEFTOUTERJOIN DAX…

  17. How to perform Load testing on Azure Analysis Services

A load testing where a same query would be fired on AAS tabular model concurrently which would the give us the metric of query execution time and AAS support load count.
This testing need to be performed. Any guidance on this.

  18. Azure Analysis Services model as data source itself

Allow for having a central/master AAS tabular semantic model that is a source for some satellite AAS semantic models (import or live, the latter ideal) that are consumed in live connection mode with tools like Power BI.

  19. Add ability to use Event Stream & Event File targets for xEvent Sessions

xEvents are tremendously helpful for monitoring and troubleshooting performance issues.

Ideally we'd get both "Event Stream" and "Event File" targets as there are good use cases for both.

  20. Deploying bim file using Powershell

Currently we are manually creating TMSL file from bim file and checking-in to invoke deployment via powershell using Invoke-AsCmd. Can we have option to deploy directly from bim file?
