  1. Explain what enabling app insights on web app does

One can create a web application that would report to AI without ever enabling it in Azure portal: just install appropriate packages, initialize the library with instrumentation key and you are done. You don't even have to run the app in Azure, the data is still going to be sent to AI regardless.
With that, it is unclear why there is a separate "enable Application insights" button in portal and what it does. There is no documentation linked that explains what exactly happens when it is enabled there and why is there a need to enabled it. It would be…

  2. Pause the gathering of data

To be able to simply pause the collection of data via the portal without the need for removing the SDK's etc. I'm assuming that this would update the sample config to 0 for everything.

Thanks for the valid suggestion. Your feedback is now open for the user community to upvote & comment on. This allows us to effectively prioritize your request against our existing feature backlog and also gives us insight into the potential impact of implementing the suggested feature.

  3. Show partial Instrumentation Key in Dashboard to identify App Insight instances by instrumentation key

When dealing with different App Insight instances specified within config files using an Instrumentation Key, it can be difficult to locate the specific App Insight Instance in the Azure Portal, armed only with the instrumentation key.

Given an instrumentation key, I would like to quickly navigate to the relevant Application Insights instance in the Azure Portal, perhaps by being able to see a couple of the characters from the instrumentation key next to the list of the App Insights instances.

  4. Consolidate Settings

Consolidate the various places where one cat set the instrumentation key. I just found that my app had two different keys:

    APPINSIGHTS_INSTRUMENTATIONKEY
    ApplicationInsights:InstrumentationKey

One set by the portal, which I think is for the debugger, snapshots, more integrated solutions and the other one is set by me or VS at install into the app. This is the one that I would typically use to embed for JS and (in some cases) manually at startup for the app.

There's also the config file, it seems (I don;t use that). There should be one place to ensure that the correct key is…

  6. App Services attach support custom applicationInsights.config.

Currently we cannot change the ApplicationInsights.config, when we have set up Application Insights extension for monitoring Web App.
ApplicationInsights.config is hidden from Kudu console.
Could you review the below idea?

  8. There needs to be a option where we can sort data based on each server rather than seeing a consolidated view of all servers.

  9. How do I remove ApplicationInsights for a specific environment from Azure Portal ?

What is the way to deactivate App Insights for our production environment ? We could remove AppInsights nuget packages from our app, but that would prevent us from using it when deployed in our test / staging environment. However, we do not want to use it anymore on production environment (due to too many "surprise monthly price" bad news).

How can we do that ?

  10. Add a 'description' attribute to the AI instance definition and dashboard

We have a growing number of AI instances in our account, and since the Name cannot be changed (without a corresponding change in the application(s) that report to it), it is often very difficult to figure out which AI instance is the "right" one for a given project. Adding a "description" text field which could be edited at any time would greatly assist in management.

  11. Add the ability to disable warning emails in Powershell

The daily cap warning level cannot be set or disabled via PowerShell, only the cap reached email or level can be set.

The PowerShell command Set-AzureRmApplicationInsightsDailyCap needs to be updated accordingly to accommodate for the warning as well.

Also, when adding a new feature like this, the PowerShel needs to be updated before the feature is released for public consumption. Otherwise admins get flooded by emails if they have a lot of app insights in Azure and they then have to manually go and disabled or set the cap for hundreds of app insights.

  12. SKIP the mandatory creditcard info at sign-up, there are more developers without a Creditcard than with one. Creditcards are only

SKIP the mandatory creditcard info at sign-up, there are more developers without a Creditcard than with one.

See what the creditcard brought the USA economy (2008) and do not wonder why people (mostly not Americans) are very reluctant to take a creditcard.

So by means of this policy you exclude people that don not want to live off credit.

That is a discriminating policy and should be changed immediately.

  15. Allow Application Insights App Services extension survive clean redeployment

If you enable App Services extension for your service from the portal and then redeploy your service from Visual Studio selecting the clean option that deletes existing files, you Application Insights monitoring will be disabled. To re-enable monitoring you will need to remove and re-enable extension again.
Please improve this by detecting redeployment and re-enabling extension automatically.

  16. Add ability to recycle, stop, and start an IIS application pool

It would be great if Application Insight could provide control over the current AppPool. And even better, if it could provide ability to reboot the server.

  17. Allow customers to identify App Insights resources which are collecting data but no one is viewing it

It's essential in the enterprise to ensure that App Insights resources that are collecting data are really being used, and not just collecting data, incurring costs, but no one is using the data.
