  1. Can't see full sql

We're unable to see SQL passed into database. If it's a proc, we can see the name of the proc, but what we're tying to do is look at failures and continuously improve. That would require full command text, including full sql with paramters.

  2. Daily Cap Report

A report that shows daily caps for all AI resources.

The initial 100GB/day can result in huge charges. Typically, this is controlled via daily caps and sampling. However, unless you use a template to deploy every single resource it's possible to have resources created with the defaults.

A report showing what the sample rate and daily caps are for each AI resource would be great to determine at a glance what's going on. Additionally, some reporting to group them together would facilitate seeing outliers.

Additionally, there are times that a resource is running into some issues and the sample rate…

  3. Explain what enabling app insights on web app does

One can create a web application that would report to AI without ever enabling it in Azure portal: just install appropriate packages, initialize the library with instrumentation key and you are done. You don't even have to run the app in Azure, the data is still going to be sent to AI regardless.
With that, it is unclear why there is a separate "enable Application insights" button in portal and what it does. There is no documentation linked that explains what exactly happens when it is enabled there and why is there a need to enabled it. It would be…

  4. Move Region while retaining log history

As more regions become available for application insights, it would be nice to move region of application insight resource while retaining the log history.

  5. Disable & Enable Application Insights as Needed

Need an option to Disable a specific instance of Application Insights and Azure Monitor during a planned Maintenance Window and then the ability to re-enable it when needed. Could not find such an option on the Azure Portal. Currently it is only possible to stop telemetry by changing the web.config file of the app but nothing on the server side on the Application Insights instance.

  6. Add support for Azure Monitor Service Tag Availability Tests

Currently, Application Insights is part of Azure Monitor. However, Availability tests and other Application Insights are not included in the Azure Monitor service tag, so administrators must instead currently use the IP addresses listed at: For now, the only way to address this would be using the IPs at: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-monitor/app/ip-addresses and subscribing to the RSS feed: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs/commits/master/articles/azure-monitor/app/ip-addresses.md.atom.

  7. "service tag" for Application Insights whitelisting in NSGs

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-network/security-overview

Create a service tag for application insights so it is easier for a user to whitelist the app insights IPs on the NSGs

  8. Pause the gathering of data

To be able to simply pause the collection of data via the portal without the need for removing the SDK's etc. I'm assuming that this would update the sample config to 0 for everything.

  9. Show partial Instrumentation Key in Dashboard to identify App Insight instances by instrumentation key

When dealing with different App Insight instances specified within config files using an Instrumentation Key, it can be difficult to locate the specific App Insight Instance in the Azure Portal, armed only with the instrumentation key.

Given an instrumentation key, I would like to quickly navigate to the relevant Application Insights instance in the Azure Portal, perhaps by being able to see a couple of the characters from the instrumentation key next to the list of the App Insights instances.

  10. Consolidate Settings

Consolidate the various places where one cat set the instrumentation key. I just found that my app had two different keys:

    APPINSIGHTS_INSTRUMENTATIONKEY
    ApplicationInsights:InstrumentationKey

One set by the portal, which I think is for the debugger, snapshots, more integrated solutions and the other one is set by me or VS at install into the app. This is the one that I would typically use to embed for JS and (in some cases) manually at startup for the app.

There's also the config file, it seems (I don;t use that). There should be one place to ensure that the correct key is…

  11. Allow data retention beyond 2 years

While work is in progress to extend retention up to 2 years (as Log Analytics has), there is a need for data retention longer than this.

  12. Application Insights support connecting Work Items to different Azure subscription

Application Insights has the ability to connect to an existing Azure DevOps project so that Bug Work Items can be created.

This doesn't seem to work if the Application Insights instance is in one Azure Subscription and DevOps is linked to a different subscription/AAD

  14. Allow Data Sources managements from the Analytics/Logs blade inAzure

In the old standalone AI website, we could click on settings and manage Data Sources, which would show up in "Other Data Sources".

Managing Data Sources, however, seems to be impossible in the Analytics Azure blade.

Please add a link to manage data sources in the "Logs" blade of an AI resource...

  15. App Services attach support custom applicationInsights.config.

Currently we cannot change the ApplicationInsights.config, when we have set up Application Insights extension for monitoring Web App.
ApplicationInsights.config is hidden from Kudu console.
Could you review the below idea?

    idea:
App Services attach support custom ApplicationInsights.config, when we have set up Application Insights extension.

Thank you for posting this suggestion.

While work has not started on this suggestion yet, configuring Smart Detection rules via ARM and integrating with Action Groups are in our plans, and something we’d very much like to add after the current set of priorities are implemented. We’ll keep posting updates here as anything changes.

As for supporting “to define separate rules sets based on resource groups”, could you please clarify on this suggestion? Are you looking to configure Smart Detection rules at the resource group level rather than on the individual Application Insights resource?

    Thanks,
    Harel Broitman

  17. Error message of delete failure should be more specific.

Even just the App Insights resource is locked to prevent to be deleted, we can't determine it since the error message is as below.

    "Could not deleted
    Could not delete application"

The message should be more specific like as other resources such as Web Apps.

  18. Allow auditing of Application Insights activity

Support the ability to audit and view who is using various features in AI, ad hoc queries that are run, what information was viewed, etc. Perhaps feed this information into Azure Activity Logs or similar. This information can then be used for certain auditing scenarios as well as usage and behavior information.

  20. Cannot share reports or dashboards from "Personal" account to "Work or School" account

I have a web app with JavaScript that records events in App Insights, in the Azure subscription that is part of my Visual Studio subscription, which is under a "Personal" account (even though it is through my company). If I share an App Insights with a user in my company and the user has a "Work or School Account" (same domain as my Personal account), they cannot view the report. Enabling the debugger in IE11 shows that they are getting "Access Denied" errors (though they see nothing but a blank frame). I should be able to share with any type…
