Support for R
Are there any plans to support R scripts in the future?

Thanks for your feedback. Currently, we don’t have any plans for R support in Functions. We will monitor the votes on this request to accordingly inform the priority on our backlog.

It is critical for us too. We are a very big international organization and much of our code is in R and Stata. We are literally stuck right for not being able to deploy R code. We are even thinking of translating some of our code to Python, which is not ideal at all.

Continuous R support in Azure Function is critical for us!

I would also appreciate Azure Functions to directly support R code since approx. 80% of the data scientists in our company are working in R. It would make deployment way easier and prevent us from using rather unstable methods as wrapping the code in e.g. C#/R.NET or JavaScript/r-script.
So, are there any news on that topic?

This is a problem for my team, as we currently use R in our azure functions that we created in our test environment and will need to find an alternative going forward if you dont plan to put it back in as we cant add the extension in production.
I'm a little bit cheezed off that you offer it at first and we begin to use it then you remove it. -

We have very large customers using R today and are considering moving to AWS as Lambda supports R AND Python.

This is business critical for us and so far the problem seems to be that it is way to hard to simply run a R-script on Azure the same way you would be able to execute a Python / JS script on Azure functions. I do not want to run a container / VM machine the whole time when I simply want to run 30-100 scripts that run for 10-60 seconds.

Running R data science functions serverless is key for those organisations which have a deep investment in skills and code in this language. Azure ML Workbench has no R support so the only way to run R in Azure is with Spark Data Bricks or use a VM with R server installed.

The request for R support is still in review. We're actively tracking demand across community and customer forums to find the right place for R on the prioritized list of languages (amongst Python, PowerShell, Go and TypeScript).
