Azure Functions

Azure Functions is an event driven, compute-on-demand experience that extends the existing Azure application platform with capabilities to implement code triggered by events occurring in other Azure services, SaaS products, and on-premises systems. With Azure Functions, your applications scale based on demand and you pay only for the resources you consume. Azure Functions provides an intuitive, browser-based user interface allowing you to create scheduled or triggered pieces of code implemented in a variety of programming languages.

  1. Add a Function integration output option for Table Storage

In the portal, add a Function integration output option for Table Storage. My requirement is posting low volume IoT sensor readings (~100/day/device) that can be read by Power BI. A database is overkill and too expensive.

  2. Application Insights integration with proxies

Currently AI integration is only working for functions, not for function proxies. Therefore 50x and 40x errors from backend services cannot be captured with the likes of Application Insights. Diagnostics of function proxies falls short, Azure Monitor can only be used to capture 50x errors.

Proxies are currently supported, and emit request information to App Insights.

If this is not working, and you do not see proxies requests in the requests view in your App Insights subscription, please open a github bug, as this would be a regression.

    Thanks for your feedback!

  3. Select existing Application Insights ressource on Azure Functions creation

It is a real pain to create a new function using an existing App Insights ressource:
    1. Create function with Application Insights enabled
    2. Wait for the function to be created
    3. Go to Azure functions -> platform settings -> all settings -> application insights
    4. Press "change" to bind the function to an existing App Insights resssource
    5. Go to App Insights
    6. Locate the newly created default App Insights ressource for the function and delete it

  4. Allow customers to select the VM size their consumption plan runs on

It's my understanding functions execute on an A1 size virtual machine, which has 1 core and 2GB memory. The customer has no way of changing this.

Our processing requires a bit more beefy machine as it's CPU and memory intensive. We understand using a dedicated App Service Plan is an option, but we really like paying for only what we consume. Our jobs run infrequently and tend to be on the "longer" end of the run time scale.

I'd love to be able to select the VM size we run on and pay accordingly with a consumption plan.

  6. Triggers for Service Bus Queues should support multiple processes at the same time

If I'm writing into a Queue that has a trigger to an azure function that works as a consumer, I should be able to specify to such azure function how many times it should be run in parallel. That way I can run multiple consumers from a queue a consume it faster.
    Thanks!

Our Service Bus trigger already supports this, and will spin up multiple consumers to read off of a queue. You can also tweak the number of function workers that run on a single host using the host.json maxConcurrentCalls attribute.
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-functions/functions-host-json

Please open a github issue at https://github.com/Azure/azure-functions-host/issues if your function is not processing multiple messages in parallel. Be aware that you’ll need to add messages at a pretty fast rate to trigger a scale out.

  9. Add Event Grid Output

It would be great if you could add an Event Grid output, so that I can add an event for a custom topic to an Event Grid instance. For example I'm currently analysing the change feed of a cosmos db and would like to raise an event for further processing of that db change.

  10. Don't show region warning during new app setup when not relevant

When creating a new Function App I select a storage account which I know is in the same region as the new app. The portal still shows me the attached warning which causes me to doubt myself and go off and check the storage account before proceeding. If I select an existing storage account which is in the same region I'd expect this message not to be shown.

  11. Change "last ran" approximation in Monitoring page to absolute time

At present the Monitoring page in the Azure Functions portal shows an approximation of the last time the function was run.
5 minutes ago, 2 hours ago, 3 days ago...
It would actually be more useful to have an absolute date/timestamp there, so that it's easier to tie up with other things, and if you're looking for a particular entry manually, you often know approximately the time it was made.
I know that Application Insights has all this information, but sometimes, a quick look in the Monitoring page for a function is way simpler and faster, than going through all…

  14. HITRUST Certification for Azure Functions

My company's clients are increasingly requiring HITRUST certification. We love the azure functions capabilities. Would love to see this added to the list. But our company cannot use this feature due to this limitation.

  16. Allow for newer versions of nodejs.

Currently the only version of node available is 6.5.0 https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-functions/functions-reference-node

It would be great if we could use newer versions to take advantage of packages that require newer versions and newer language features.

Version 8.x+ would be very helpful.

  17. Support API Mgmt features also for Azure Functions

A logical "merge" of API Mgmt features and Azure Function Apps seems a logical evolution of API Mgtm. It would be great to see: Developer Portal, Subscriptions, APIs + Products, API Policies and Expressions, Versioning and Revisions, Developer Authentication via AAD, WSDL, Caching, etc. also available integrated into Azure Functions which support...User Authentication, Hybrid connections, Git Deployment, Deployment Slots, etc.

Combining API mgmt features with Azure Functions makes a lot of sense, and therefore we have the following options available:
    - Azure Functions Proxies (Preview): distributed API routing and composition running in Consumption mode (serverless): supports auth, local debugging, CI/CD, and other function apps consumption functionality
    - Azure Functions Proxies running on Dedicated mode (App Service plan): supports hybrid connections, point-to-site VNET connectivity and other App Service functionality, plus functionalities above
    - API Management with Azure Functions: APIM supports adding azure functions as a backend API with all the rich APIM features.

    thanks for the feedback!

  18. Ability to mark Application Settings as Slot Settings

The Slot Settings checkbox is not there. So when swapping occurs, all the Application Settings get swapped. It would be great if we can mark some settings as slot settings, similar to the normal Web Apps settings page.

  19. Support to run multiple functions from visual studio development machine

I am sending message from my Azure Function, which is processed by another Azure Function.

  20. Can i run my azure function in my Azure App Service Environment?

Is there any clear documentation for this floating around?
