External Enterprise SAN Support using iSCSI for Storage without a SOFS
Currently Azure Stack support for external storage is poor. The only way I know of to connect, for example, tenant VMs to external storage is via a SOFS that serves as the intermediate host between the SAN and Azure Stack. For high capacity and high performance storage needs, a traditional enterprise SAN (like DellEMC or NetApp) simply cannot be beat in terms of price and performance. Using SOFS adds unnecessary complexity and performance bottlenecks since there are now multiple hops between storage and VM.
Azure Stack should allow direct connection via iSCSI HBA to traditional SANs. I understand this will not work for some PaaS some workloads, and that is acceptable. However, for VMs, at least, being able to set VHD targets to iSCSI LUNs over high performance 10GB/100GB optional HBAs provided by Azure Stack hardware partners would allow me to consolidate a large number of traditional "private cloud" workloads that I currently have to have a second Hyper-V Windows Clusters to manage, when I'd like to have it completely under the Azure and Azure Stack umbrella.
