Azure IoT

This forum is to get feedback on the new IoT services: Azure IoT Hub and Azure IoT suite. This forum will help the engineering team collect feedback from our customers and users and help us understand and prioritize the roadmap.

  1. Developer Experience - suggest renaming “routes.json” to “config.json” because it contains more than just routes

The routes.json file should be renamed to config.json as it contains more than just routing information.

  2. Need module output and input accepted type validation at compile time

Customers need guidance on how to manage message schema changes during migrations/upgrades to facilitate flexible (de)serialization.

  3. Build integrated ASP .NET Core application example

IoT-Edge V1 is capable of running .NETcore based websites and APIs; however there is no documented guidance or examples of this capability. An example should be included along with guidance for building and deploying self-hosted websites & APIs to enable more complex edge compute scenarios.

  4. Supporting CSV file format in Iot Hub Message Routing

Right now, message routing supports only Apache Avro format while storing device messages to blob storage. It would be good if there is a support for CSV file format also like stream analytics does.

Use case: D2C messages can be stored in storage account using three ways 1) using Function App, 2) using ASA 3) Message routing. If MR supports the CSV, we don't need an additional service like FA or ASA.

  5. Provide Business Alerting for Invalid/Missing/Disconnected Devices

Have a mechanism in the Azure Portal to configure alerting (email, sms, skype) for the following situations:
    1. Tell me if I havent received a message from this device/sensor in a certain period of time
    2. If I received a message from a device/sensor, but it contains data outside an expected range
    3. If I received a message from a device/sensor but it wasnt in a valid format (e.g. invalid JSON),.

We have had to build our own solution using Azure Function and Logic Apps. This should be built in to IoT Hub out of the box.

  6. Build integrated device enrollment including cellular SIM enrollment using Jasper

Build integrated device enrollment portal/API including cellular SIM provisioning using Jasper - so it can be done all in one place when adding a new cellular IoT device

  7. Support Korea region

There're many manufacturing companies in Korea.
I'm sure IoT Hub is the one of the most useful service for them.
Could you tell me, is there any plan to support it in Korea region, very soon hopefully?

  8. Allow for fall-through routing rules

It would be useful to allow routing rules to be set up with a fall through processing behavior. This would allow routing logic to be structured such that duplicate property checks across a series of rules would not be repeated.

  9. Show SAS token in IoT Hub properties

It would make life easier if SAS tokens were automatically generated and presented in the portal (both under Device Explorer and Shared Access Policies). Just need user to enter a TTL value.

  10. Add ability for IoT Hub device SDKs to use specific Network connection

When a device has multiple network cards or connection (say, Wifi and Ethernet, or 2 Ethernet cards), the IoT Hub device SDKs today pick the "default" one. It'd be interesting to allow the user to configure which connection the IoT Hub device SDK should use.

  11. Publish Custom Pre-Defined Solutions in company branded Azure IoT Suite portal (IoT Company Solutions Marketplace)

Ability to publish custom pre-defined provisioning solutions within the IoT Suite that users can select based on their business need (user case). This could be an expansion of the current pre-defined provisioning solutions IoT Suite portal, which is "Tenant" or “Tenant Environment (i.e. Sandbox, Dev, Prod)” specific for an organization. Each organization will have different use cases that can be pre-defined and published for the end user to spin up and delete the solution as and when they need it. As the current pre-defined solutions within the IoT Suite, does not typically meet an organizations use case today. This should…

  12. In Streaming Analytics, adding input for IoT Hub from different subscription fails. Appears to be trying to create new IoT Hub.

    1. Go to Stream Analytics job and add input

    2. For source select IoT Hub

    3. For subscription select Provide IoT hub settings manually

    4. Enter IoT hub name, shared access policy name and key for IoT Hub from a different subscription

    5. Hit create

Gets error "Failed to create IoT Hub"...

Error description "IotHub name '<hub name>' not available."

  13. Persist device generated data across reboot / process failure.

Currently the Azure IoTHub Device SDK supporting buffering of data when the network connection is lost. It does not seem to persist data across device reboot / process failures (ie, persist to disk). Would be nice to see a buffer method across these types of failures.

  14. Share a Node.js version of Azure IoT Suite Predictive Maintenance Example

It would be great to see a Node.js version of the predictive maintenance example: https://github.com/Azure/azure-iot-predictive-maintenance

This would demonstrate for instance, how to use Node.js for building Azure IoT Event Processor.

  15. Allow IoT Hub to send acknowledgement to Device saving battery operated devices Lifetime

Currently Device sends acknowledgement that the Command is executed or not. But the most common scenarios is IoT Hub responding with an acknowledgement to Device saying that I have received the data and you can send the next data on next interval or an command can be send as acknowledgement to Device saving time in communication and the uptime of the device.

This is most useful in case of battery operated devices and saving the energy for the data collection and not in communication. This will be optimized in terms of Communications.

  17. Add access to device twin in module message enrichment for Iot Hub

When sending events from within an iot edge module, the $twin in the message enrichment refers to the module twin. This means I cannot add things like tenantId that is managed on the device twin. Is it possible to give access to the device twin in this situation?

  18. IoT-Central will disconnect and reconnect again in an exact 48 mins

It seems due to the MQTT version issue, the SAS token cannot be updated with live connection when it's expired. It makes a weird situation that our device has to re-connect in every 48 mins...That does not make sense at all. Please help to fix this.

  19. All query of enrollments with a where clause

All for adding a where clause to a query of Azure DPS enrollments similar to Devices in a hub. Current the select * from enrollments does not honor a where clause

  20. Allow stream Analytics job query defined in Python script.

Stream analytics is very powerful concept and to get much from this service a python based query will handle real business scenario better.
