Azure IoT

This forum is to get feedback on the new IoT services: Azure IoT Hub and Azure IoT suite. This forum will help the engineering team collect feedback from our customers and users and help us understand and prioritize the roadmap.

  1. Edge service logs are not easily understood by new users

Edge-service logs are not easily understood by new users

The warning about multiple device connections was not easily understood by the customer. They were also concerned by the repeated occurence of "device proxy not found" warnings while containers were starting up. They weren't sure if this was going to have real negative impact on the system or was really just a warning. Consider making logs more understandable for the end user.

  2. Edge explorer monitor events does not use the existing edge-explorer login

Why doesn't edge-explorer monitor events use the existing edge-explorer login?
The customer had used edge-explorer login and was successfully issuing edge deployment commands. They felt that monitor events should have been possible without the --login flag - if edge deployment commands could use it, why couldn't monitor events?

  3. Difficulties Cancelling an Active IoT Hub Job when devices are unresponsive

Difficulties Cancelling an Active IoT Hub Job when devices. Intervening on the behalf of a device was also desired. An example of this would be a device transitioning into an unresponsive state, and having no option but to wait for the individual device’s timeout property to release the device and fail it within the job.

  4. ARM template updates existing IoT Hub does not appear to impact configured Routes

IoT Hub does not provide a way to update existing routing rules other than through the portal. Customers would like to use ARM templates and an API to update routing rules.

  5. Need messages to be persisted across Edge crashes or restarts

IoT Edge runtime needs message queue persistence & dead lettering capabilities to persist messages across Edge module crashes. If a module crashes the messages it was currently processing will be lost with no way to reprocess the messages when the module is either recovered or restarted.

  6. Need Tools to support config local to the module and config global to the Edge runtime for debugging purposes

The current global configuration approach does not support cases where customers have multiple developers working on isolated modules. Would it be possible to support module specific configurations along side the global runtime configuration.

  7. Need Tools command to completely clean docker, deployments and launch modules

Customers will need scripts/tooling that assist with ground-up rebuilds of entire IoT Edge runtime including dependent modules.

  8. Need to be able to use the same ExpressRoute tunnel with ACR that they have to West Europe with IPV6 only

Set up the current Express Route configuration to access IoT Hub from internal network.
Any services, such as ACR need to be accessible via the same pattern.

  9. Need a “Node RED” like editor that allows non-technical people to define Edge message flow and set module parameters

IoT Edge users are non-technical folks. They require the ability to manage Edge modules, especially device twin properties, such as temperate thresholds. We would like a Node RED like interface to accomplish this task. Node RED is a visual modeling tool that looks like visio, but can be mapped to backing stores like device twin.

  10. Build integrated ASP .NET Core application example

IoT-Edge V1 is capable of running .NETcore based websites and APIs; however there is no documented guidance or examples of this capability. An example should be included along with guidance for building and deploying self-hosted websites & APIs to enable more complex edge compute scenarios.

  11. When running on Windows Server Core, you need Visual C Redistributable

The IoT-Edge V1 documentation should include information for building and running on Windows including information about runtime dependencies like the Visual C/C++ Runtime.

  12. Visual C Runtime problems packaging the gateway into Windows containers

Need to troubleshoot Visual C Runtime dependency problems to package the gateway into Windows containers.

The IoT-Edge V1 documentation suggests that it runs in containers; however, there is no documentation showing how to run the gateway in Windows Containers. It would additionally be helpful to document all required runtime and debug dependencies; e.g. Visual C/C++ Runtime.

  14. I can't create an IoT hub in Azure.

I just registered and when I try to create an IoT hub I get error message "Unable to get property 'value' of undefined or null reference". It is shown as an error near "Pricing and Scale tier" and "Subscription" boxes.

  15. Add support for SAM3X8E Cortex-M3 to the C device SDK

There is Arduino Due build on SAM3X8E Cortex-M3 which is very similar to Mega 2560 from the number of pins perspective.
Is is possible to bring the support of this SDK to this platform?

  16. Make SharedAccessSignatureBuilder public in Csharp service client

It's already public in Microsoft.Azure.Devices, but we don't really want to reference this library from a client, because it mostly contains service stuff.

  17. Allow Device Twin Metadata on Device Creation via REST APIs

Need to create a device with a device twin property. We want to do that with one call. Right now it is two, one to create the device and one to add the Device Twin property.

  18. Provide message isolation at the Event Hub level

Customers would like their Device Data to be physically separate for security reasons. Their Tenants do not want their data to live in the same physical space as another Tenant.

    Suggestions:
Charge a monthly flat fee for IoT Hub usage and let them configure as many backing Event Hubs as they need. They’ll pay for the IoT Hub and then pay for the Event Hub usage on a per message basis.

Implement a routing mechanism that allows Customer to route a message based on a header or other query data in the HTTP message.

  19. Provide alternate authorization hook mechanism

Customer needs to support Authz at the IoT Hub end point. They need to ensure that the security token is valid, not tampered with and that the Tenant Id in the message is allowed to send data from the associated devices.

    Suggestion:
Support an Authentication mechanism that allows them to inject a module or a function in the pipeline and after or before messages are shredded.

Standing up a protocol gateway for this is not an acceptable workaround because they will need to manage another SF service just for this.

  20. Requesting Azure SDK using .NET can be use by other language too

I have successfully make a pending physical device on IoT Suite to be work by using your guideline which I called "Device Activator". Somehow, I have some important inquiry since I'm not very very familiar with C++ and native C code.

Ok, I have follow another articles for sending data to iot hub which I treat it as a device information sending application using C# Console and the graph is display on mygraph.azure-devices.net. Ok, lets say I want this Native C code to be DLL so I can make another console to enable user to use 1 exe but activate…
