Azure IoT

This forum is to get feedback on the new IoT services: Azure IoT Hub and Azure IoT suite. This forum will help the engineering team collect feedback from our customers and users and help us understand and prioritize the roadmap.

  1. Add gradle support(native Android) for provisioning

If one needs to do group provisioning/enrollment in an Android application there is no gradle dependency. There is a gradle dependency available for iot-device-client only. Please add gradle dependency support for provisioning.

  3. Please add straightforward documentation on the REST API with examples

Current REST API documentation is hard to follow and requires multiple tabs open at the same time to get anywhere. Please create a single page example of how you would send telemetry from a device that was unable to use the SDK and cannot use an x509 cert (we just want to see the HTTP messages involved). Something like this: https://au.mathworks.com/help/thingspeak/writedata.html (though obviously more complicated as the auth side of things is more advanced)

  4. In InvokeDeviceMethodAsync allow non JSON payloads

In the InvokeDeviceMethodAsync you can only set payload values that are valid JSON (using the SetPayloadJson function). See: https://github.com/Azure/azure-iot-sdk-csharp/blob/master/iothub/service/src/JobClient/CloudToDeviceMethod.cs

Via the Azure Portal however, you can set any value as the Payload (JSON, but also plain strings). It would make sense to have the SDK also allow to set payload values that are not JSON.

  5. Remove the need for third-party registration, for MXChip drivers

The MXChip tutorial requires users to obtain a driver from ST-Link,.
However, this is only available once name and email address is provided.

Unexpected extra hoop, having purchased the hardware, to then require registration for someone else's drivers to use the hardware.

  6. IoTHub Overview blade showing different usage count on Refresh click

IoTHub overview blade "IoT Hub Usage" widget displays used message count from daily message quota. When repeatedly clicking Refresh button to see the latest count, the count goes up and down randomly. It shows the correct value as well on some attempts. But in other cases it shows a lower value.
(It looks like the counter value is being cached on several backend server instances which is not getting synchronized)

Thanks for the valid suggestion. Your feedback is now open for the user community to upvote & comment on. This allows us to effectively prioritize your request against our existing feature backlog and also gives us insight into the potential impact of implementing the suggested feature.

  7. Write Cordova Plugin for Azure IoT SDK.

Write cordova plugin for Azure IoT SDK. It will benefit the hybrid app developer and hybrid app's can leverage the both Azure IoT SDK Java and C function's in iOS and Android apps.

  9. routing Azure IoT hub device's (sensor) data to logicApp endpoint?

is there a way to route IoT hub device's sensor data from IoT hub's device to logicapp endpoint?

Currently, we can use the "IoT hub event" to route device status (connect/disconneet/etc) to other endpoints but we cannot route the sensor data itself, e.g. a temperature value property in device twin.

Is there a way to route those customized the data to endpoint as well?

    Thanks

  10. Tile for SKU monitoring

    Provide a tile that shows:
    1. My purchased Units vs.
    2. Current usage (Messages, Bytes)

so that I can easily see how much of the units I pay for I do actually use.

  11. IoT Hub Twin event-driven update

Since IoT Hub is message/event based (e.g. AMQP), in order to get a twin update why would I need to put the GetTwinAsync() in a loop? Rather than having a callback/event-driven model (again , natural for event driven architecture)? thanks

  12. Missing steps in documentation for MXChip

The instructions are missing some steps required to test connectivity with MXChip AZ3166 and Azure. The doc is at
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/iot-hub/iot-hub-arduino-iot-devkit-az3166-get-started

Below are steps which I followed and need to be incorporated for a successful test.

PS: Most people in NYC IoT workshop had to figure this out via trial and error. Mar 20,21 2019

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/iot-hub/iot-hub-arduino-iot-devkit-az3166-get-started#prepare-the-development-environment
    1) Save connection string in notepad created by VS Code
    "iotHubConnectionString": "HostName=xyzxyz;SharedAccessKeyName=xyzxyz;SharedAccessKey=xyzxyz"

    2) Wrong step* in Provision Azure IoT Hub and device
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/iot-hub/iot-hub-arduino-iot-devkit-az3166-get-started#build-your-first-project

F1 -> Azure IoT Hub -> Create device -> enter name as <choose-your-own> to get connection…

  13. Support the new Azure Monitor metric alerts

I’ve got a customer who would like an alert for when he gets close to his daily quota, but I don’t want to point them toward the classic alerts if they are being deprecated soon

  14. Simplify MQTT UserName

If we connect to IoT Hub through MQTT from MSDN we get the next rules for username:

    {iothubhostname}/{device_id}

But some third-party hardware modules don't allow slashes for username.

Could you omit {iothubhostname} part at all in the username and leave just {device_id}?

  15. Documentation changes are constantly making older links problematic

If I step away for a fortnight I have difficulty repeating the step-by-step exercises. The subject is so vast that naturally there are forks on the way but it gets challenging with the newer distractions.

There has to be better documentation somewhere? Even the Blinky tutorial has rich features that are "undocumented?" Why?

  16. Add support for more than 10K SAS tokens for file uploads or optimize token usage

    Problem:
Currently we have file uploads from devices through IoT Hub. For each upload the device has to receive a SAS token that is valid for a minimum period of 1 hour. Storage supports up to 10000 SAS tokens issued at the same time, which effectively limits the number of devices doing uploads to 10K. For use cases where for example you have 30K devices and every device has to do an upload every half an hour this doesn't work.
    Solutions:
    1) Add ability to link multiple storage accounts to file uploads on IoT which would allow to at least…

  18. Would like to see Ubuntu platform support for Azure Sphere Dev Kit eventually.

MXChip development is supported through Ubuntu. Would like to see similar support (i.e. VS Code) for Azure Sphere in the not too distant future.

  19. Twins over multiplexed AMQP

This has been discussed in https://github.com/Azure/azure-iot-sdk-c/issues/546, where it was closed with suggestion to use IoT Edge. As far as I understand, IoT Edge is used on prem. I have observed the need for an implementation of a cloud GW implementing the identity translation pattern using one single multiplexed connection....

  20. MQTT C2D reject message

I have tested Azure IoT SDK in Node.js. I found that MQTT does not implement C2D reject/abandon. We need this feedback message to ensure the message was received and processed, is it possible to implement these message back?
