Lab Services

Azure Lab Services is a service that enables you to easily set up and provide on-demand access to various systems and software for any workload: teaching a class, setting up a development or test environment, or running trials with customers. Manage and scale your group’s resources in lab environments, while minimizing waste and controlling cost. Choose between the two lab types, classroom lab or devtest lab, for an experience that is tailored to your scenario.

  1. DevTestLabs' users don't have authorization to access the shared image gallery by Rest API or CLI

I try to use api to get the list of shared image galleries images in our devtest labs, but response code is always 401(Unauthorized).

    API:https://management.azure.com/subscriptions/{subscriptionId}/resourceGroups/{resourceGroupName}/providers/Microsoft.DevTestLab/labs/{labName}/sharedgalleries/{name}/sharedimages?api-version= 2018-10-15-preview

This api is from the configure-shared-image-gallery page. URL: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/lab-services/configure-shared-image-gallery

I also try to use the az sig API, but I also don’t have authorization.

Why devtestlabs' users don't have authorization to access the shared image gallery? Or how to config the authorization?

A shared image gallery (SIG) is configured at lab level.
A lab user can consume a SIG image to create a VM from. Lab users do not have access to update/attach/detach the SIG for the lab.
This is similar to other features in labs such as virtual networks, marketplace images etc.

You should be able to view a list of enabled SIG images when you create a VM in a lab as a lab user.

Can you share why you would like to list SIG images as a lab user?

  2. Select NSG for DevTest Labs VM on creation

Currently there is no way to select a VM-level NSG for a DevTest Labs VM. In order to allow both VM-level and subnet-level NSGs to both be applied to a VM (for example, per policy requirements). This should be possible when creating a VM in DevTest Labs.

Networking for DevTest Labs is handles at lab level.
You can add your own VNET to the lab under configuration and policies – Virtual Networks.
Lab users can select a specific network they want to create their VM in from a dropdown that is configured by the lab owner.

Can you share more on why you would like to configure the NSG while creating a lab VM?

  3. Overview 'My virtual machines' has a scrollbar for both column values and column titles

In the overview tab, 'My virtual machines' has a scroll bar for both the columns titles and column values.

I believe this wasn't intended and isn't often seen. Typically they move together so you can more easily associate values with titles/labels.

  4. postpone or cancel auto shutdown

I have my VM set to shut down at 7PM, however I'd like an ability to skip the shutdown on a particular day, in case I am working late.
Currently I have to delete the auto shutdown and enable it again once 7PM had passed.

  5. There is no obvious option for starting VMs automatically at a set time each day, yet there is an option for automatically stopping them.

There is no obvious option for starting VMs automatically at a set time each day, yet there is an option for automatically stopping them.

I clicked on the feedback link on the automatic shut down page for a VM, on the Azure portal to get to this page. I don't know why I was sent to a "lab services" page. It seems this feedback link sends users to the wrong place.

You have reached the right forum. We recently renamed the forum to lab services, however you can find DevTest Labs category on the right hand side pane.

For the feedback, can you please share what you mean by obvious?
In Labs, you have an option to set auto shutdown for your VM for a specific time of the day everyday.
For auto start, you can opt in to the lab auto start schedule and the setting of the schedule is taken care of for you by your lab owner.

Would you like the ability to set a time yourself? If so, can you help understand the scenario for the same?

  6. Don't send DevTestLabs shutdown notifications for production VM's

We are receiving notifications with a subject line of "Alert—Auto-shutdown of virtual machine <machine name> in 30 minutes.

The VM in question is, I am assured by our infrastructure team, in a production resource group, in a production subscription, with a production SLA.

It does have an automatic shutdown configured by some mechanism, but I do not know the mechanism.

Notifications from microsoft should not be stating that this is a notification from DevTest labs, since the VM is not in a DevTest Lab according to the infrastructure team.

The auto shutdown for Azure Compute VMs can be disabled and is not something that needs to be enforced on the machine.
If you are the owner of the VM and using it for a production scenario, you should be able to opt out of the shutdown schedule to ensure your VM will keep running. Do you own the VM you are talking about?

The shutdown mechanism is provided by the DTL team, however the message should not say DevTest Labs unless the VM is in a lab. Can you confirm if your VM is in fact outside of a lab?

If you are using a DTL VM, it is meant to be used for Dev and Test scenarios only and shutdown can be set at lab level by your lab owner and at lab VM level depending on the level of control you have on setting DTL VM level…

  8. autoshutdown manual default value

Oftentimes admin has same single or few needs of values for autoshutdown TZ and hour.
Would be nice to have be able to set default value in webUI (or use saved user profiles if you plan to add more flexibility and choices to that option)

  9. Lab/user policy to deny claiming/unclaiming VMs

Please add the ability to completely disable claimable VMs in DevTest Labs. The feature is abused to generate tons of unclaimed VMs in the lab under VMs-per-user policy.

  10. Option to choose how we connect to VM when we click [Connect] button in DevTest Labs' VM blade.

When we choose [Virtual machines] - [<target VM resource>] - [Overview] and then click [Connect], the management portal shows "To connect to your virtual machine via RDP, select an IP address, optionally change the port number, and download the RDP file." And we can select 'DNS', 'Public IP' or 'Private IP'. However, when we go to [DevTest Labs] - [target lab resource] - [All virtual machines] - [<target VM resource>] - [Overview] and click [Connect], no option to connect is shown and downloading RDP file just starts. It is such a hassle to go to standard VM's blade to do…

    Thanks for your feedback!

DevTest Labs is built in a way that lab owner sets up the networking for the entire lab. The goal is to not have lab users go through the hassle of looking for the IP addresses and other information to connect to their VMs.

Can you please describe your scenario and why you need this information to connect to a lab VM?

  11. Progress meter for Dev Test Lab creation

Creating VM's by nature can be slow, seeing progress or maybe diagnostic logs would help elevate frustration when spinning up this product.

  12. The option to suspend auto shutdown for a few hours

It would be a very nice feature to suspend the auto shutdown for a few hours. I.e. when you are working late or have a long running process that you expect to finish a few hours after the auto shutdown time.

  15. RDP Gateway Server

I need the ability to easily set up a lab with an RDP gateway server. I want to use labs in a classroom setting, but all but the primary ports (i.e. http, https, etc) are blocked by my IT department so there's no way to connect to the VMs. Being able to connect through an HTML5 client would also be beneficial.

  17. Give permissions to Manage Resource Groups Created by VMs in DevTest Lab

When Creating a VM in Dev Test Labs they are created in new Resource Groups. Since Resource Groups can not contained within each other, they are created "parallel" to the Resoruce Group the DevTest Lab is contained in.

The newly created Resoruce Groups should automatically have the same Users with the same Roles assigned to them, so i can manage and configure the RBAC on one Resource Group containing the DevTest Lab.
