Lab Services

Azure Lab Services is a service that enables you to easily set up and provide on-demand access to various systems and software for any workload: teaching a class, setting up a development or test environment, or running trials with customers. Manage and scale your group’s resources in lab environments, while minimizing waste and controlling cost. Choose between the two lab types, classroom lab or devtest lab, for an experience that is tailored to your scenario.

  3. Ability to restore VM's to original state post creation

    At present we can create snapshots of the VM's however no further use unless we create VHD's and then manually re-create VM again which require much more efforts. Instead please add some functionality to store the VM states where the restore of VM to the point saved can be completed. For example system restore function is used to restore the system state in this case VM with data should be stored or saved to restore to the restore points instead of just system or OS data.

  4. Show Which Labs Have an Active User Logged In

    It would be useful for the virtual machine list to show which machine has a user actively logged in so as administrators/instructors we can know which machines can be stopped without interfering with a student's work.

    There is no obvious option for starting VMs automatically at a set time each day, yet there is an option for automatically stopping them.

    I clicked on the feedback link on the automatic shut down page for a VM, on the Azure portal to get to this page. I don't know why I was sent to a "lab services" page. It seems this feedback link sends users to the wrong place.

    You have reached the right forum. We recently renamed the forum to lab services, however you can find DevTest Labs category on the right hand side pane.

    For the feedback, can you please share what you mean by obvious?
    In Labs, you have an option to set auto shutdown for your VM for a specific time of the day everyday.
    For auto start, you can opt in to the lab auto start schedule and the setting of the schedule is taken care of for you by your lab owner.

    Would you like the ability to set a time yourself? If so, can you help understand the scenario for the same?

  6. Allow for greater variety of auto-shutdown schedules

    Allow for greater variety of auto-shutdown schedules

    E.g.:
    - multiple times per day;
    - various days in the week;
    - weekends;
    - recurring dates;
    - one-time; etc.

  7. Time Format for Auto-Shutdown on Portal

    The format or way of selecting time on the Portal needs to be improved.

    E.g.
    allow 24hr clock option
    schedule up and down times across a given week start/stop
    (date selection covered in a different posted idea)

  8. Allow DevTest Lab owners to connect to read-only shared image galleries

    Currently a DevTest Lab owner needs to have contributor level access to a shared image gallery in order to have it listed as available for connection to the lab. This may have been with the thought that a lab owner would create the lab's images, but in many cases someone else will provide standard images. Allow galleries to appear for connection to the lab if the lab owner has Reader access to the gallery.

  9. Please add Classroom Labs to MAG

    We have DoD customers who train DoD members world wide from E-1 to GS15, and would greatly benefit from this service as they migrate from on-prem to Azure with Classroom Labs.

  10. delete unused VMs in DevTest Labs

    As an extension to the expiry date in DTL, an option to auto-delete VMs not used for xx days would be awesome.
    Maybe even a warning e-mail to the VM owner before the deletion

  11. Support auto-shutdown that does a deallocate as well

    Auto-shutdown is great, but I'd like it to deallocate as well, so I don't get charged. That's my primary reason for wanting auto-shutdown, so I don't get charged for a playground VM twiddling its thumbs overnight.

  12. allow multi-system configuration in Azure Lab Services

    It would be great to have a few machines deployed for each user so that they could have a complete environment with multiple services (DC, SystemCenter, SQL, Desktop, etc).

  13. auto shutdown email notification needs also webhook field to be filled

    Cannot add email address for VM auto shutdown.
    After switching "yes" at "Send notification before auto-shutdown - filling only the "Email address" field correctly -
    while "Webhook URL" is empty -
    the "Save" button does not get enabled - it is still disabled.

    This is not a known issue. Ideally, user should be able to enter the email address only and click the Save button. This may be a bug we may need to investigate with your lab as we are not able to reproduce it on our end.
    Are you still experiencing this issue? If so can you please create a support ticket with us so that we can look into your lab.

  15. The virtual machine shuts randomly and sucks... not stable at all

    You really have to take a look to virtual machines on azure... not reliable at all. Machine shuts down randomly with no reason and when reboot, the port 80 will not be accessible for a while before restart working...

  16. Option to auto shutdown VM when no user is active for X minutes

    While the auto shutdown on a daily basis is great, if I haven't been logged in for an hour it would be nice if the machine would shut down automatically. This is especially true as I am experimenting with developing using an Azure VM

  17. Make it more affordable for nonprofits

    Nonprofits can't afford to pay $0.20/hour to run VMs for a library or classroom. For 10 machines to be running and used during lab hours, that's $1-2K/week. It's just way outside of their budgets.

  18. autoshutdown manual default value

    Oftentimes admin has same single or few needs of values for autoshutdown TZ and hour.
    Would be nice to have be able to set default value in webUI (or use saved user profiles if you plan to add more flexibility and choices to that option)

  19. Ability to directly change VM ownership

    Please add a direct way to change ownership of DevTest Lab VMs. The only supported way for now is unclaiming it first, then claiming it by another user. It's possible for other users to intercept VMs in unclaimed state.

    We need this feature because we automate creating VMs in DevTest Labs shared by users using service principal. In the final step of the autonation, we have to change the ownership from the service principal to a designated user.

  20. Lab/user policy to deny claiming/unclaiming VMs

    Please add the ability to completely disable claimable VMs in DevTest Labs. The feature is abused to generate tons of unclaimed VMs in the lab under VMs-per-user policy.
