Lab Services

Azure Lab Services is a service that enables you to easily set up and provide on-demand access to various systems and software for any workload: teaching a class, setting up a development or test environment, or running trials with customers. Manage and scale your group’s resources in lab environments, while minimizing waste and controlling cost. Choose between the two lab types, classroom lab or devtest lab, for an experience that is tailored to your scenario.

  1. Make auto start working

Every morning when trying to login after 8:30 AM, the VM is not working and needs to be started manually. But, auto start is scheduled for 8:30 AM. Do not auto shutdown in general. Restart once a week over the weekend should be enough,

  2. AutoShutdown config page: Information is still needed after the feature is disabled

    To reproduce the bug,
    on AutoShutdown config page, set:
    "Enabled" - "On",
"Send notification before auto-shutdown" - "On"

Then, turn "Enabled" - "Off", click "Save". There will be a error message.

  3. Auto Shutdown based on Idle Time

Would like to shut down dev resources if they are not in use to save money. Sometimes we need to spin up a VM for testing and forget to turn it off and it gets expensive.

  4. Allow multiple artifactory selection by providing checkboxes

To choose multiple artifactories, lot of user clicks are needed as we need to select individual artifactory one at a time.
Allow user to select all the artifactories required in one go and then provide him options to enter related configuration for an artifactory if any in subsequent screens.

  5. Ability to configure lab settings programmatically

Currently there seems to be no way to programmatically (without the use of the Portal by manually clicking) set DevTest Labs settings like:
    - globally setting the Encryption Set
    - enabling Browser Connect
    - defining VM placement settings (in one RG vs. each in separate RG)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a real blocker when doing the settings as automated as possible.

  6. Ability to manage permissions on claimed VMs

With current behavior, when a lab user claims a VM, the lab user will have "Owner" privileges on the claimed VM. This means that lab users can even delete the claimed VM. This behavior make it difficult for lab admins to manage lab VMs' lifecycle.
It would be great if lab admins can manage permissions that is added to lab VM when VM is claimed by users. This feature enable lab admin to manage VMs' lifecycle and to permit lab users to only claim/unclaim/start/stop lab VMs. I don't think this scenario can be achieved with current DevTest Labs features.

  7. Ability to disable or hide [Connect] button if [Browser connect] is enabled by Bastion integration

We have both [Connect] and [Browser connect] button for VMs if we configure DevTest Labs integrated with Azure Bastion. (Public Preview right now.) It would be great if we could disable or hide [Connect] button for specific users when DevTest Labs owner wants users to connect VMs only from [Browser connect].

    • To create custom role without '.../getRdpFileContents/action' and assign users doesn't help because users have Owner permission to VMs after they claim.

  9. show core limit earlier

I created a lab template size "Large, nested virtualization" and from that derived 8 student machines.
Everything looked to, 8 VMs were created - all of the same size 32GB and 8 cores.
Then I started one monday my course - and to my surprise got the message, that my core limit is exceeded - and that only 3 VMs can be started.
That message came far too late - it would be better to show a warning already during creating of the lab VMs. Like "you might get into trouble, cause you might not be able to start all…

  10. Auto Shutdown doesn't work consistently and notifications have never worked.

I have found that the Auto-Shutdown feature does not always work consistently and I have never gotten the email notifications to work.

  11. Allow more flexibility in VM SKU

I work with a group that needs to do very basic work that requires a GPU. A SKU like the NVv4 would probably be sufficient, but the cheapest GPU-enabled VM available in Lab Services costs about 6 times as much.

  12. Very small compute VM required

The ALS solution is fantastic but please consider providing a very small compute instance in the solution. The current Small Compute VM is TOO powerful (and therefore expensive) for our requirements.

Please consider a very small compute size similar to the Azure Virtual Machine -A1 v2 with 1 CPU and 2GB RAM. (or even smaller!).

This would still be suitable for most of our Linux labs, and significantly drive down the cost of using the solution, thus making it more appealing.

  13. Enable Tagging to either be applied via Policy or inherited from the Lab Account

We have to apply Tags to resources so we can charge schools for Azure usage. We use Policies on Resource Groups to Tag resources automatically on creation.
The Lab Account has it Tags created correctly on creation - however, any Labs created within the account do not have tags applied. (The back-end is probably not in the resource group)

Can Labs created in a Lab Account obey any polices as if they are also in the resource group - or can they have the option to inherit the tags of the Lab Account they belong to.

    We cannot use this…

  16. VM startup scripts

As you already have planned start/stop VM instance based on a user-defined schedule would be very useful to be able to specify scripts to be run on the VM at startup and on shutdown at least on the linux ones :)

  17. More options of virtual machine size and access other port

Are there any plans to add more options of virtual machine size same as the options of the DevTest Labs, we feel it too high specifications for a Linux terminal.

Currently, the small size is 2 cores, 3.5GB RAM and cost of USD 0.20/hr. If there will be lesser specifications which also lower the cost. The current setup of Lab Services assumes that you're using GUI or particularly on Windows.

Hope there is an option to tunnel a specific port(s) not just ssh and rdp. If we make web services (80,443) that too can be accessible to that option. Another…

  18. Add the postpone shutdown options in dashboard as well for VM's

Add the postpone shutdown options in dashboard as well for VM's
Currently delay options are available in email notification but not in the menu, kindly add those.
