DevTest Labs

Azure DevTest Lab is a service that helps developers and testers to quickly create environments in Azure while minimizing waste and controlling cost. You can test latest version of your application by quickly provisioning Windows and Linux environments using reusable templates and artifacts. Easily integrate your deployment pipeline with DevTest Lab to provision on demand environments. Scale up your load testing by provisioning multiple test agents. Also, create pre-provisioned environments for training and demo.

Visit the Azure DevTest Labs page to learn more about DevTest Labs and how to get started.

  1. Attach an existing resource group to a DevTest Lab

We have existing resource groups with test environments. We would like to add them to a DevTest lab so that they are managed by the DevTest policies.

        • Auto Shutdown warning

Change it so it initiates the windows shutdown command with a delay and notification on it; eg shutdown /s /t 900 /c "Azure Auto Shutdown"

Then if you are actively using the machine the user will be warned (a popup will appear) AND the user have the option to cancel the shutdown ("shutdown /a").

Also having the ability to send an email notification would be helpful.

            Thanks for the feedback.
Currently a user receives an auto shutdown notification either via email or a webhook which also includes the ability to wither delay or skip shutdown. The feature for having in machine notification via popups is in the backlog with no ETA.
For anyone who want to see this happen, please don’t hesitate to vote for it.
I will update this post for further updates.

          • Create a Resource Group and then use the portal to add services to the DevTest Lab

At present VMs are created within the DevTest lab section of the portal. When a new DevTest Lab is created it could just create a Resource Group. Services could then be added via the rest of the portal, outside of DevTest Labs in the usual way. This avoids reinventing the wheel inside DevTest Labs and also provides a higher level of customisation for features such as Virtual Networks.

When a new DevTest Lab is created, it does create a resource group consists of a Lab resource, a storage account and a virtual network. VM creation needs to happen within the Lab though, while it also creates a separate resource group just for the VM. Is it something mentioned here that you want to create VM (as “services”) from the normal VM creation flow in Azure outside of the Lab but the Lab somehow can recognize it, or are you asking for a different thing? If it’s the former, what’s the downside in your opinion that you’d prefer to do that outside of the Lab? I appreciate any clarification. Thanks!

            • Allow to select the Resource Group for my VM/VHD image

When adding a new VM/VHD image to DevTest Lab, it as default creates a new Resource Group containing that VM image, network interface, Global IP etc.
And that is also fine if you need the extra level of security. I some cases though, I just don´t need the extra overhead that these resource groups pose - would like to have everything in one and same resource group.
In our company we typically use <Product/Application Name><Environment letter> as the naming for our resource groups. So if we can avoid it, we do not like all of these "extra" resource groups that…

              • Auto-scale down of App service

It will be very useful for application built to run in the PAAS environment to have a scaled down economical version of the PAAS in the DevTest labs

Thanks for again your suggestion! I updated the title for this post to reflect the potential feature that can help control the cost of app service (since you already can spin up App Services through ARM templates in a lab today). Please don’t hesitate to let me know if this is different from what you want.

Addressing cost control for PaaS is on our roadmap. It has to be prioritized with other features, so we don’t have an ETA at this point of time. Meanwhile, would you mind sharing with us more ideas how you would like the scale-down to work with your PaaS resources (and which PaaS resource)?

                  • Add lock to VM Resource Groups to prevent deletion

When VMs are created in a DevTest lab, new resource groups are created for them. Those RG have the VM, Network Interface, Load Balancer, Avail. Set.

You should add locks to those RG to prevent deletion.

                    • Allow tag inheritance on resources from a formula when deployed

Formula created in a DTL via ARM template should allow Tags to be defined in it - from that it would allow tag inheritance on resources from that formula is deployed

I.e Formula called "QAbox" Tagged with "Department : QA" Whenever that formula is deployed the resources should be tagged appropriately.

                      • Replication of managed images

Replication of managed images across region is not possible. Currently if have to make a copy of my custom image from region A to region B.
I have to first download a .vhd file, then move it to another region and then create a custom image there. This is a lengthy, time consuming and tedious process. Why not provide a replication option where I can choose what to replicate, when to replicate and in which DTL to replicate.

                        It will be extremely helpful.

Thanks for the request, Prashant! Could you please help us to understand better about your scenario? Do you want to create VMs in a different subscription from the Labs using the resources you listed (e.g. VNET, Storage account, etc.)? Why is your lab in a different subscription from those resources?

                                      • Make some of the settings available for standard resource groups,

Make some of the settings available for standard resource groups, limiting the type of VMs that can be created, setting a spending limit etc. would be really useful
