  2. Pricing issue/confusion on MS site

This has been now renamed to Azure Synapse Analytics. I see a surprising change in pricing. Compute cost of all Gen 2 services is same irrespective of the configuration. e.g. - DW100c costs same as DW30000c

Either someone messed up with the site while pushing updates or there is some reasoning behind it which I cannot comprehend. Can some one advise why is that happening? Screenshot attached for reference

  4. evaluate table structure for queries at table level (select count(*))

Polybase does not evaluate datatypes for queries at table level like "select count()". When a numeric field contains alpha numeric data the record is not rejected when you use "select count()", but it is when you use "select *". It will be great when this is consistent.

  5. Please enable the ability to read audit files in ADW

There is no counter part to the system function sys.fngetaudit_file (Azure and on premise SQL Server) in ADW. Please enable it to read audit files in ADW.

  6. Add ActiveQueryCount to REST API property outputs

Provide ActiveQueryCount as a result output under .properties for the REST API database state parameter.

  7. Error File Logging For All Major Formats

Currently in order to use the error file functionality CSV format must be used.

The main issue is that using other formats like parquet, ORC, etc. no detailed information about load errors can be captured (row #, column #, exact values). In most of these scenarios the error message returned is also too generic to even guess the row/column causing issues.

The standard suggestions to convert to CSV makes debugging data load issues complex because changing the file format actually can eliminate the underlying issues, or in some cases introduce new issues, because the formats are treated differently.

  8. Access to ADLA catalogs using Polybase

It will be nice if we can access ADLA catalogs using Polybase , we can theoretically eliminate the process of ELT . Please share your thoughts .

  11. Samples are no longer to choose

Samples are no longer to choose

    Hi.

I'm trying to create a Sql Data Warehouse with the sample AdventureWorksDW, but I don't see the option in Additional Settings when you create it. New updates of SQL Data Warehouse in Portal changed this. Is there another way?

    Thanks in advance.

  12. xp_logininfo

I would like to make use of Active Directory Groups for Row-Level Security.
In order to do so I need a functionality to know to which group a login belongs to:
    1) a user logs in using AD. The user belongs to a specific group.
    2) I can use xp_logininfo to know which group that login belongs to
    3) i can use the group within a mapping table for RowLevel Security
    4) the user can see only the rows allowed to the group he belongs to

  13. Information Disclosure in error message

    Hi,
In the example in this(https://docs.microsoft.com/en-in/azure/sql-data-warehouse/column-level-security) page where 'TestUser' receives an error while querying Membership table. The error message displays SSN column name stating that it is not accessible to user. This is my opinion is not proper. I remember from way back that such information disclosure as part of error messages was considered a BAD programming practice and a Security Risk. Although there are many links discussing this I am pasting here the first one I got http://cwe.mitre.org/data/definitions/209.html

  14. Validate the credentials on the Import Database Screen and provide error on that page before submitting the task to execute.

This would give instant and clear feedback to the user that the credentials are not valid.

  15. Need provision to add message when resume/pause requested

At the moment can get the resume/pause activities through activity log in Azure Portal.

If there is provision to add message when paused/ resumed it would be helpful to trace back the on demand pause/resume requests happened over the time when audit happens.

  17. Keeping consistent delimiter for external table

we ran into a bug yesterday due to changes in behaviour of Data Warehouse - we previously had a file format which had '\t' defined as a field separator and that worked well to store our tab-separated files to external tables, however yesterday that stopped working without any changes on our side, and we had to define a new file format which actually had a tab character as its delimiter, and not the \t character, to fix this behaviour.
This caused part of our production environment to be down over the weekend.

  19. It's not clear how to legally connect via ODBC

In the Microsoft Azure SQL Data Warehouse documentation it says that you can connect to the instance using ODBC. However, the link to the ODBC driver is to a driver with a licence which is for software design, development and test.

It's not clear whether there is an ODBC driver in existence for production use.

  20. I have source as a flat file having data in multiple lines in a string column, when I insert the same data into Azure SQL Datawarehouse data

I have source as a flat file having data in multiple lines in a string column, when I insert the same data into Azure SQL Datawarehouse database, its removing the new line characters and data is appearing in a single line.

I checked the data by copying into Notepad++ , its appearing in a single line.

Is there any option in Azure SQL Datawarehouse database to fix this issue.

    Example: CREATE TABLE test ( ID VARCHAR(20) , TASK NVARCHAR(100) ) WITH ( CLUSTERED INDEX ( ID ) )

Insert into table with multiple lines in TASK field

    insert into test…
