Rename Resource Groups
Need the ability to rename resource groups either via PowerShell or the new portal.
The Azure Resource Manager team is actively investigating the scenarios around renaming resource groups. To help us better understand the use-cases and to determine which implementations may be viable to address the problem, we would appreciate if you could fill out this 3-minute survey:
I was out in Redmond for an Azure Site Recovery customer event back in June. I brought this problem up to the engineers and they basically shrugged it off as a non-issue. So I'm not expecting to see it fixed anytime soon.

I don't understand why a simple rename has to be treated as a move. Wouldn't it be easier and so much faster to simply keep the resource GUID as it is, and simply rename the display the string?
Surely everything behind the scenes is linked based on the GUIDs rather than the string names?!
devils advocate here...
If they do this, they need to come up with an actual 'id' that is not dependent on the resource group name. TONS of work and re-referencing...
Should have done it right the first time around...check out AWS as a reference. (ie dont create an id that is contingent on another resource)
Renaming resources should *not* be handled like a resource move. Those are 2 different operations. The GUID for the resource group should rename the same, all we want to do is rename (assuming the name we want to change to is available and valid). After building out some sites and environments, names like "Default-Web-WestUS" no longer works for us, but we basically have to tear everything down and put it back together again. It should not be so.

Please provide a way to change the display name of a resource group

this feature is seriously needed! I just tried out Azure few days ago and found I that I can't rename things. This is bad for organizing resources. This is a very basic feature I can't believe in this poor architecture design. Very bad! Please fix it or we will take our business somewhere else.
no feedback is bad, no update will it come and when or not an option
+1 for me. There are several marketplace items (Visual Studio Team Services, Enterprise Service Bus for example) that create 'default'-style names all over the place, which hurts from an organizational standpoint.

It is beyond me just how poorly this was designed

+1 for this one. I've got quite a few things stuck in "Default-*" groups that I'd love to rename to something more appropriate.
What is going on here??? Just do it already. It cannot be that complicated.
If making this change is so difficult I have some very serious concerns about the overall architecture of Azure. You want me to trust Microsoft to handle the safety and security of my company's data yet you can't handle something as simple as allowing us to rename a container? That, to me, indicates extremely poor design, or flat out laziness if it's something you just haven't gotten around to for the past two years.
It's pathetic how 2 years later this still isn't available. It's even more pathetic that the community needed to request this functionality in the first place.

Is that too hard to implement it? :D

What a pity. More than a thousand votes in almost two years time and Microsoft still ignores us.
Oh come on, how do you expect us to manage and organize large number of resources without this? On Amazon AWS instead? Yes??
Geesus! yes, how many portals do you need to manage the same environments. I am using the portal, but to rename the Subscriptions you have to goto the classic interface. and I just realised my initial resources are all stuck in a group called the "Group" because it was the first one defaulted by Microsoft and naturally you'd assume you can change these names.. .only to realise you can't.
Dear Microsoft, don't throw half-baked c#%p. This is not the 80's or the 90's anymore. Just fix it please.
Also what's with the Powershell commands with a "RM" for half the commands?? get your teams to work together please. If you really want to take a shot at AWS.
Please add this feature, it will really help organize and locate resources.

It's very frustrating having to move resources from one resource group to another (and some resources can't even be moved at all!) just to name the resource group something more appropriate.
It's been over 8 months since we last heard about this, what is the current status of this enhancement?
