  1. Collect data from custom containers in storage account

We are trying to use appinsights and trying to export that data to the storage container. In the current version of OMS we want to configure custom storage container from where the logs/application data must be read for doing Alert Management.

    Thanks
    TJ

Yes in the future we would like to enable this, but it needs work to define your own schema and fields first – not just their location.

This general work is also needed for ‘generic’ log collection i.e. http://feedback.azure.com/forums/267889-azure-operational-insights/suggestions/7113030-collect-text-log-files

Also, for doing ‘alerts’ you need to be able to create those alerts – check this idea http://feedback.azure.com/forums/267889-azure-operational-insights/suggestions/6519198-long-running-saved-searches-or-scheduled-that-ca

  2. Allow variables from saved search in email subject

It would be helpful if you could dynamically add the variables (from saved searches - such as computername) to the subject line of email alerts.

The reasoning behind this is in our ticketing system we want the computer name to be immediately visible for an OMS generated alert. We are currently hardcoding the searches per computer however with the amount of servers we manage we are hitting the saved search limit of 250.

  3. Alerting TimeWindow limitation of 24-Hours makes Alerting useless. Shoud really match the retention for LogAnalytics!

Alerting TimeWindow limitation of 24-Hours makes Alerting useless. Shoud really match the retention for LogAnalytics!

Is there a way to come around some major limitations when creating Alerts? The biggest problem is the Time Window restriction. This restricts us from searching in data older than 24 hours when creating an alert. I expect a record for a custom MessageType
to arrive once a week, i am not able to create an Alert if this message does not appear as expected.
The retention days for OMS Log Analytics is minimum 31 days according to this article: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/…/change-oms-log-analytic…/
    Why do we then…

  4. Can't create alerts based on cross-resource queries

It used to be possible through the OMS portal to link an Application Insights instance to Log Analytics. Since the portal is being depreciated, along with the App Insights connector, we are forced to use cross-resource queries to query an App Insights instance from a separate Log Analytics instance. This works fine for general queries, but we cannot create alerts based on cross-resource queries. The alert will not create because of a "syntax error", when the same query works in Log Analytics.

There should be a way to ingest App Insights data into a Log Analytics instance. Or else we…

  5. More scheduling options for alert triggering

Most of us have monitoring rules that are somehow different in the week end (or at night), just because some resources are left down. For example, I wanted to create an alert for when a particular VM was not started by automation on week days. Although I can easily set up that query to work on week days, it will unnecessary trigger an alert on weekends. Therefore, having a more advanced scheduler for alerts would be great, such as this: "check for this alert every X minutes with <everyday|weekdays|specific> recurrency"

  6. scroll bar does not work in chrome and Safari

When going to the OMS Alert list (Overview->Settings) in chrome (Version 61.0.3163.100) and Safari (Version 10.0.3 (12602.4.8)) on MacOS (Version 10.12.3 (16D32)) the scroll bar does not appear on the screen when you have more Alerts than is available in the list. Nor are you allowed to scroll down the list of alerts with a scroll wheel when that component of the screen has focus.
The Scroll Bar works fine in FireFox (56.0) on the same computer. I have replicated this on multiple MacBook Pro's.

  7. Create the cmdlet to fetch our OMS alert or alert rule to easly maintenance, due Get-AzureRmAlertRule do not support this feature today.

Add support to get-azurermalertrule to handle the OMS Alert and alert rule to maintenance, clone, delete, etc. Due actually is not supported, if you need it required to work on Alert API.

  9. We should be able to customize the email body of the email notification generated by Alerts.

So, Alerts will be sending default emails.. we should be able to generate the customized email with the search results.

  10. Need ability to exclude time frame for alerts

We would like the ability to exclude time frames from alert management as there could be system downtimes due to maintenance that are throwing alerts that are false positive. Either allow the ability to exclude date/time ranges or globally disable alerts when doing system maintenance and planned downtime

Big thanks to @Stefan – you can filter for specific time period using the new query language of log analytics; which in-turn can be used in OMS Alerts to skip over specific times.

Regarding the ask for making global maintenance windows in Azure – we are working on the same and we’ll intimate you soon when we are ready with the functionality. Thanks again for your idea and feedback for Azure.

  11. Owner in Alert IP

Add Owner field to alerts - would be great for management to see, who is having problems with resolving alerts :)

  12. Email Notifications should show all devices instead of only 10

Currently OMS email notifications show details of only 10 devices/machines in the email body even if there are more devices in the notification list. Requesting a change to the email notification to include all results in the email or atleast the ability to modify the max number of devices in the email body.

  13. OMS Alerts pass Computer name to alert

I want to Run a bunch of alerts over Computer Groups.

When an alert gets triggered by one of the computers i would like the alert to include the server that triggered the alert.

    E.g.

We want a Heartbeat check over all servers.
When server1 is not sending it's Heartbeat I would like the alert to say
    'Heartbeat on server1 is down'

So passing the alert name in the form of 'Hearbeat on {serverName} is down'

And being able to extract information from the Log search as the variable

    e.g.
    | extract Computer as {ComputerName}

  14. Give user option to choose time zone for Alerts results

The events are in local time, however, when I create an Alert and have it emailed to me, the events are listed in UTC. This adds complexity & confusion to a simple task.

Allow end users to choose which time zone to display the Alert results in.

    Hi,
Thanks for the feedback. We understand the misnomer with time values shown in Alerts.
We have tried to correct this behavior in new Azure Alerts (Preview) – where we provide query preview for log alert created using localized time as reference. Azure Alerts (Preview) currently allows you to create and manage both monitor as well as log analytics based alerts from the same interface; for more details see: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/new-alerts-preview-in-azure-monitor/

  15. Alert email query character limit

There is a link in the alert emails from Log Analytics that pulls up the query results in a browser. There seems to be a character limit on the query that is returned by the link. One of our queries is 800+ characters and is only partially displayed, resulting in a syntax error when following the link. Please increase the character limit of the linked query.

  16. Apply Actions to the OMS Alerts Severity Levels (Inheristed Actions)

We want all the Alerts at one Severity Level to have the same Actions

What we propose is Inherited Actions.

Allow Actions to be applied to the Severity Level, and all Alerts at that level would inherit those Actions.

Any Rules with their own actions would keep them or Override the inherited rule.

This would make creating multiple rules easier

  17. Support for cloning of alerts

It would be nice, if we could clone existing alert rules in OMS.

    Hi,
    Thanks for you suggestion.
We are now looking at creating means for making it easier to template, deploy and manage alerts – we’ll incorporate means of cloning alerts in this. Will revert with more details as we progress and roll it out in future updates.

  18. resolved

Ability to have an emailed alert when original issue has been resolved.

Example, I have Log Analytics configured to send an emailed alert when a specific Windows Server service enters the stopped state. This sends an alert. I'd like to be able to configure Log Analytics to automatically send a second email when that service enters the started state.

  19. The ability to incorporate Top Processes utilizing CPU for individual CPU alerts in OMS

I would like to have the ability to generate a CPU alert for any system monitored by OMS. This alert should fire when the CPU reaches 100% for 30 minutes and has a CPU Queue greater than 10. When the alert condition is triggered, I would like for it to capture the top 10 processes using CPU at the time that the alert condition is reached. This is an example of the alerting capabilities that I need OMS to have. I will not have SCOM in this environment, just OMS. I am not able to incorporate secondary conditions into the…

    Hi,
Currently you can use Azure Alerts to trigger alerts for CPU usage based thresholds for any system. When the alert is triggered, as an action – since you seek advance use-case like details of top processes running; suggested approach is using DevOps options, meant for such scenarios and power users – such as yourself.

Leveraging Azure Runbook or Alerts Webhook when an alert is fired, can do the necessary debugging action. For example: Alerts can trigger via Webhook to Azure LogicApp, which can run a script/powershell to get necessary debug details of OS as well as your app and then use connector like email or slack – to push these details to necessary team.

For creating alerts which span across machines in OMS, suggest using the new query language appropriately – to aggregate or group results for your machines. Then configuring alerts for this query.

  20. Maximum number of search results in notification e-mail limited to 10 results only

The number search results shown in the e-mail generated by the Alerting engine seems to be limited to 10. The "search results" field in the alert e-mail shows e.g. "49 result(s)", but the results previews below only shows 10. In a setup where stakeholders need to know about all results, but are -with respect to regulatory laws- not allowed to access the Azure Monitor site itself, this is a very rough limitation. It would help to be able to increase this limit generously (1000 results).
