Cheaper Default Pricing
If you spin up a collection, the default storage capacity is set to "Unlimited" and throughput is set to 25,000 RU/s.
If you spin up a collection, and choose the fixed storage capacity, the default throughput is set to 5,000 RU/s.
These are insane defaults! The former will cost you about $1460/mon and the latter would cost you about $292/mon.
We just hit with a huge bill because someone in our org just accepted the defaults and didn't see the pricing.
The default pricing should give customers the cheapest option and let them consciously choose to upgrade later. Behaviors that take advantage of people who choose defaults erodes trust.
We have made recent changes Cosmos DB and reduced the minimum throughput. In the portal today when creating a new collection, the storage capacity is set to fixed with a minimum throughput of 1000.
Thanks for your feedback and input on this. We are constantly working on improving this experience for customers.
