Azure Search

Azure Search is a search-as-a-service solution that allows developers to incorporate a sophisticated search experience into web and mobile applications without having to worry about the complexities of full-text search and without having to deploy, maintain or manage any infrastructure

How can we improve Azure Search?

  1. Provide a local emulator or increase the number of indexes on the free tier for development use

    It sucks that if I have more than 3 indexes I have to create a paid tier for development. We do not need performance or size. Just more index to simulate the production environment which contains more indexes.

    • Support case-insensitive comparison in filters

      Searching with text=<xyz> performs a case-insensitive search. However, testing string fields in filters is case-sensitive. There should be a way to do a case-insensitive string comparison in filter expressions.

      • Support "swapping" indexes

        Let's say you want to make some changes to an index, like changing from tokenized to indexed or from Edm.String to Collection(Edm.String), ... or even re-index all the data with some additional information.

        It would be great if we could have a "production" and a "staging" slot in an index (similar to Cloud Services for example) where we can do whatever we need to do in the staging slot, and as soon as we're ready (all data has been indexed), we simply swap the staging slot to the production slot and from that point on the new index is used.

        • Support hierarchical facets

          Searching in a hierarchy is very common.
          E.g. Cars/Ford/Accessories

          • Linq2AzureSearch

            Beeing able to utilize LINQ in order to search in indexes just like LINQ2SQL looks like. The codebase would be simple to write, simple to read and analogous to LINQ2SQL query. Linq2Lucene project (https://github.com/themotleyfool/Lucene.Net.Linq) defines a very nice interface for fast time to market.

            The Database context would be replaced with a Azure Search context that would wrap all REST based and JSON making the developer only focusing on the most important, Search.

            Similar, delete and updates would be handled the same way a Linq2SQL handles it in the codebase.

            Time2Market for Azure Searchbased inventions would be furious.

            • Case-insensitive sorting for string fields

              When querying the index, is it possible to do a case-insensitive $orderby on a string field? For example, we want to sort results by username but preserve the user's choice of casing. While we could workaround this by keeping a normalized version of the username alongside the original data, having this feature built-in would obviously be preferable.

              • Support for Dictionary DataType

                Dictionary datatype is very common. Often, we'd like to store our data as a dictionary. Currently, I serialize and store it as a string. It'd be great if the dictionary type is supported.

                    • Support custom dictionary

                      Some domestic senario like, Legal, really domestic topic require custome dictionary for more accurate wordbreaking, stemming and normalization. I think custome dictionary with easy maintemance like SharePoint or FAST provide today is help this type of senario.

                      • Azure Search Alerts

                        Azure Search should have alerts similar to Azure SQL database. For example, I should be able to set up an alert to warn me if my index is almost full, et.c

                        • Prospective search (aka percolator or reverse search)

                          It would be huge for my application to be able to do reverse searches a la Elasticsearch's percolator feature: Given a document ID, which saved queries would match that document.

                          • sintax highlight length

                            Could we get a parameter to specify the length of a highlight fragment that is returned when the highlight parameter is used on a field? The string returned is too short for some of our users because they are searching very techincal data and need more context. It would be very useful to be able to return longer fragments depending on the field we're searching so we need control over this.

                            • Improve Faceting accuracy by having an option to count all records

                              For fields that have a large distinct value diversity, the faceting feature gives inaccurate results unless the count parameter is set to a number greater than the number of distinct values in a field. There should be an option in an index field that indicates to the search engine to count and facet all the values in a column. I realize this would hurt performance so it should be optional. But sometimes accuracy is more important than raw performance for consumers of your service.

                                • Enable indexing of gzip compressed blobs

                                  https://stackoverflow.com/questions/46245505/indexing-gzipped-blobs-in-azure-search

                                  I am trying to setup Azure Search over Azure Blob. The json blobs are compressed using gzip.

                                  When I try to index the blobs as-is, I get the exception :

                                  "Error detecting index schema from data source: "Error processing blob https://mystorageaccount.blob.core.windows.net/mycontainer/urlencodedname with content type ''. Status:UnsupportedMediaType, error:""

                                  Looks like Azure Search blob indexer does support indexing ZIP archives (application/zip MIME type), but not gzip-compressed files.

                                  • Provide the ability to hibernate/revive the index

                                    There are many scenarios where indexes are only needed for particular periods. A simple example is for demo purposes. I want to be able to have an index ready to use, but only use it periodically. It's too expensive to keep it running. It would be more 'cloudy' to have the ability to save/hibernate it to storage, and to be able to revive it from there. (I saw another suggestion to backup/snapshot. That's good but it also needs the ability to be deleted and still be recovered).

                                    • Add xpath syntax to promote out interesting values from source [XML] documents to predefined index fields

                                      I have lots of structured blobs (XML, JSON), I would like a mechanism to promote/extract a given field so it can be present in a specified index field rather than just rely on text in the content field? Or must I still run an external process to parse and write these promoted values instead of using built-in Azure Search features and the Data Source / Import process?

                                      • Return partial match for highlights

                                        Currently the highlight option return full word even if there was a partial match with the query text.

                                        For example for search text ‘gupt* ashgu*’ we get ‘Gupta’ and ‘ashgupta’ as the highlights. Instead it would be good to have only the matching parts to be highlighted so that user knows why those suggestions are being surfaced.

                                        "highlights":{
                                        "displayName":[
                                        "Ashish <em>Gupta</em> (WP)"],
                                        "mailNickname":[
                                        "<em>ashgupta</em>"]
                                        }

                                        Simple user scenario is, when user searches for ‘ashgu’ and we currently return top result as "Ashish Gupta, 'ashgupta’".

                                        The expected user experience is to show "Ashish Gupta, 'ashgu'pta", ie the exact things that matched…

                                        • New Suggestions metadata in response (2014-10-20-Preview)

                                          Right now when you use the new suggestions feature, you get a match with some optional pre/post tags and a list of fields you indicated in OData select.

                                          For example, using names from AdventureWorksLT and a suggestor that searches the FirstName and LastName fields, I could make this query:

                                          https://[instance].search.windows.net/indexes/[index]/docs/suggest?api-version=2014-10-20-Preview&search=bon&suggesterName=namesuggestor&highlightPreTag=%3Cmark%3E&highlightPostTag=%3C%2Fmark%3E&$top=10&$select=FirstName,LastName

                                          {
                                          "value": [
                                          {
                                          "@search.text": "<mark>Bon</mark>ifaz",
                                          "FirstName": "Luis",
                                          "LastName": "Bonifaz"
                                          }
                                          ]
                                          }

                                          The payload is amazing already! For client libraries, it would be incredibly useful to also have an option to return an additional metadata field @search.field. This could indicate which field was "matched" when providing the result. So…
