Documentation Update: DPM Backing up S2D/Azure HCI Deduped ReFS Volumes
Regarding this documentation: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/dpm/dpm-support-issues?view=sc-dpm-2019
It indicates that deduped ReFS volumes are not supported. However, I opened a support case to ask about Deduped ReFS Hyper-V volumes which are used in Storage Spaces Direct and Azure HCI. The technician confirmed this IS a supported configuration. The documentation in the KB should be updated to reflect this as a supported config.
Thank you for allowing time to research on this.
As per confirmation from our senior resources, we support the backups of Virtual Machines hosted on a deduped REFS S2D.
(NOTE: The virtual machines will be backed up as a full file (un-optimized form). However, we can notice optimized backups in case of “files and folders”)
To conclude, we can continue to perform the backups of our virtual machines hosted on a deduped REFS S2D.
But we will not be able to see any difference in the file size as DPM will pick the full size of the vhdx only (Also confirmed as per the testing performed by you).
I hope I am able to provide you the required answers.
