Azure Backup

Welcome to the Azure Backup feedback forum! This is where we would like to hear your feedback and ideas on how we can improve our product.

How can we improve Azure Backup?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. move vm from recovery services vault to new vault

I need a way to move a VM from one recovery services vault to another. For example, I want to stop backing up a VM in recovery services vault A, and start backing up the VM in recovery services vault B. At the moment, I can stop backing up the VM, but cannot choose to back it up in the other vault.

  2. Allow Pausing of Azure Backup

Pausing a large backup, particularly the initial Online backup, would have saved me 4-5 days vs. starting from scratch. Additionally, you can't throttle bandwidth while a backup is running. Pausing would should also allow a change in throttling.

  3. Multiple schedules of synchronization job

For example - 15 minutes synchronization on work hours and 1 hrs synchonization after them.

  4. Make It Easier to Add Exclusions

Suppose I was backing up drives C:, D:, E: and F: and I wanted to add exclusions for file types *.flv, *.mov, *.mp3, *.pst* and *.tmp. In the job configuration I have to manually add:
    C: - *.flv
    C: - *.mov
    C: - *.mp3
    C: - *.pst
    C: - *.tmp
    D: - *.flv
    D: - *.mov
    D: - *.mp3
    D: - *.pst
    D: - *.tmp
    E: - *.flv
    etc. etc.
    F: - *.tmp

Please add the option for global excludes across all drives!

  5. Display bar on progress

It should be great if you show progress in Bar format too. So, that user can know how much backup is completed.

  6. Use TAGS for selecting Backup schedule/policy

Today, I like to use TAGS to identify who owns a VM, where charges should go, who to contact for support, etc. I'd like to be able to use a tag to determine AUTOMATICALLY what backup schedule/policy to use. Veeam has an option to do that based on vSphere tags. I'd like to propose that as an enhancement if it's not already in the works. Thanks.

  7. Include status of backup consistency for azure backups

From the portal.azure.com web interface we can see the type of consistency for a backup. We would like to have visibility into this information through the PowerBI reports and powershell commands.

  8. Integrate Azure Backup with Group Policy

We have Azure Backup (MARS) deployed to 150+ servers across the globe and we would like to see a mechanism whereby we can make a global change across all servers e.g. Group Policy.

For example, we now need to add a file exclusion to every job on the 150+ servers and as far as I'm aware this means connecting to each server individually and making the change.

  10. Functions for checking the progress status ( ** % etc.) of Azure Backup from Azure Portal

We can check from Azure Portal whether Azure Backup is completed.
However, we cannot see how far it is going at this time.

Our customers want us to implement visualization of the percentage currently being achieved by Azure Portal.

  11. "Backup Pre-check" Status detection

Currently we don't have any way to detect "Backup Pre-check" failure or warning. To keep backup operation in stable condition, we should have detection function.

  12. Enable the labelling of Azure backup/restore points

Allow users to label their Azure backups or restore points such that users can easily identify their backups and revert to restore points when needed

  13. Change Resource Group for restorePointCollections

"Microsoft.Compute/restorePointCollections are store in a special ressource group named : AzureBackup_<Region>_<number>.

The good idea could be to be able to configure an other RG for each Recovery Service Vault to store restorePointCollections.

  14. Exclusions based on minimatch patterns

I want to be able to exclude certain folders from backups by default and I want to be able to use wildcards to do it. Right now this is a nightmarish thing to do and the documentation is very scarce.

    Examples:

    c:\users\*\sources\repos\**\.git\
    c:\users\*\sources\**\node_modules\
    c:\users\*\sources\**\obj\
    c:\users\*\sources\**\packages\
    c:\users\*\sources\**\.vs\
    c:\users\*\sources\workspaces\**\tf$\

    c:\users\*\Dropbox*\
    c:\users\*\OneDrive*\
    c:\users\*\Google Drive*\

Having to manually configure these or to have scripts that try to continuously update the backup schedules on machines is madness.

  15. I would like to manage the Azure Backup client remotely

I would like to manage the Azure Backup client remotely. Can install a desktop number, and manage and edit backup plans without access to the computer.

  16. make it possible to see when a recovery point / backup for an Azure VM expires.

When using recovery services vaults it is not currently possible to see when a recovery point is due to expire. This makes administration difficult as ad-hoc backups can be assigned individual retention periods and recovery points may have been taken using different policies.

  17. Allow ability to search an index of backups

Could you please add the ability to search for a filename through all backups vs having to manually mount each backup and determine if the file is there? Having an index that shows when the last backup of a particular file would be incredidibly helpful.

Use case: User deletes a file at the beginning of the month. During end of month reporting, they try to find the file and notice it is gone. End user calls backup admin, backup admin pulls up a UX to be able to search for the filename and then is presented a list of dates…

  18. Comments tab on the protected Items page

We have a situation where we are looking at backing up servers from multiple schools.

The problem is most our schools servers are all called the same, for example "schserv01"

When installing the backup agent and it is then registered and protected in Azure, we have multiple servers all showing up with the same name "schserv01" Now we do not know which one is for which school...

We can't rename the server, So would it be possible to have a comments section on the protected items page within the portal, that way we could comment which each server is. Better…

  19. SCOM Management Pack for Microsoft Azure Backup Server

As far as I can tell there is no way to monitor Microsoft Azure Backup Server from SCOM, as there is no "Central Console" that can be installed on the SCOM management server

  20. Intelligence pack for Operational Insights (monitoring of the backup)

We would like to have an Intelligence Pack for Azure Backup for Azure Operational Insights so we could centralise the monitoring with Azure Operational Insights.
