  1. Identify Backup Jobs for VMs with the same name in the same Recovery Services vault

If you have two VMs in the same subscription with the same name (in different Resource Groups), and you associate both to the same Recovery Services vault:

    • You can identify each one in the Backup Items list, since it tells you the Resource Group name.

    • You can not identify which Backup Job corresponds to which VM, since it only tells you the name of the VM.

I tried obtaining the Backup Job data using Azure CLI, but even then, I only can see the "Entity Friendly Name" of the VM.

  2. Recover IaaS VM back to on premise

For regulatory reasons we need access to historic backups. If for any reason we move away from Azure I need to know I can still access them so I would like to be given the option to recover the VM to an on premise location.

  3. Azure VM Backup in Different Azure subscription within the same region

Why we cannot protect an Azure VM running in Subscription A to a Recovery Services Vaults based in Subscription B. Both (VM/RSV) are in the same region.

This is very important scenario. For example, we want to have a dedicated subscription for backup only, and we want to organize backup cost per subscription, etc.

In large organizations, the backup operators are not the same who operate the VMs. From a security standpoint, we want to separate operations tasks with different subscriptions.

    Thank You!

  4. Restore VM in cloud services (and vnet) associated with affinity groups

Is possible to suppress following limitation?

"We only display cloud services and virtual networks that are not associated with any affinity groups in the restore instance details."

    ... detailed in http://bit.ly/22oHwfk

  6. show failed status for scheduled backup jobs of deleted items

In doc https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-azure-manage-vms, it shows that 'If Azure VMs configured for Azure backup are either deleted or moved without stopping protection, then both scheduled backup jobs and on demand (ad-hoc) backup jobs will fail with the error UserErrorVmNotFoundV2. The backup pre-check will appear as critical only for failed on-demand backup jobs (failed scheduled jobs are not displayed).'
Customer hopes the portal can show some alerts or message for backup of deleted VMs. So that they clear up the backup resources in time.

  7. Azure backup route Traffic

i have my on-prem network connected to Azure using the ExpressRoute, the resources on azure use our on-prem DNS server.

When backing up a VM usin azure backup to a vault the backup goes out through the ExpressRoute, that generate a lof of traffic and cause troubles to our link.

is there anyway the Azure Backup traffic can go through Microsoft backbone instead of ER since i'm backing up in the same region as the VMs?
can we keep the backup traffic on the Azure backbone ?

  8. Enable backup support (or improve documentation) for Classic VM's in an Azure Virtual Network

Creating a new (default config) Classic VM in an Azure Virtual Network (wth S2S VPN) do not current seem to be discoverable.

Documentation is limited on this configuration and it seems one need to create another VM with a Proxy server to achieve this ?

  9. Allow backup of VMs without backup of Encryption Keys.

There are some VMs where ensuring the security of the VM is more important than ensuring the longevity of that VM. Please allow backup of BEK encrypted VMs without also backing up the encryption keys or the BEK volume.

Auditing of the usage and permission changes of KeyVault needs to show the whole story. If a restore of a VM is required we can restore it as disks only and manually recreate the VM with the link to keyvault.

If the keys are deleted from KeyVault that should make all the backups unusable.

  10. Backup a DR replicated powered-off vm for long term archival

Allow backing up of a powered off replicated VM. The situation is such that we replicate our VMs to Azure for DR and leave them powered off. We would like to then backup the replicated copies of those vms directly from Azure to Azure backup so as to reduce bandwidth.

  11. Backup SharePoint Workloads running in Azure IaaS

Having the ability to backup and restore SharePoint Server workloads (2010/2016/2019), to the item level, in Azure backup like you can in DPM and AzureBackup Server on-prem.

The goal would be to have SharePoint workloads backed up using server less infrastructure.

  12. Obtain Backup Detail from a VM's Overview/Essentials

It would be great to have the ability to look at a VM's Overview/Essentials and see which Vault and Policy contains the VM's backups and also obtain the detail from the powershell cmdlets linked to the VM's

This will enable a backup admin to instantly locate a backup of a VM instaed of hunting through numerous vaults.

  13. Azure Recover Service

I am currently testing the Recover Service to backup Azure based servers and have discovered that the agent has a requirement for the server to not have FIPS encryption setting turned on (HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\FIPSAlgorithmPolicy\Enabled = 1)

Turning this off reduces the security posture of the server and goes against our standard and security team requirements. Considering this is a show stopper for us is there any consideration to changing the requirement for FIPS to be turned off?

  14. Azure VM Level Backup - Shut Down original VM before starting up restored VM

Azure VM Level Backups (announced March 26th, 2015) include a restore step that starts a VM with the same computer name on the network as the original VM. I recommend adding a checkbox that prompts the user whether they want the original VM shut down or turned off, as this would avoid having two computers on the network with the same computer name. Or in a batch environment, you would not want a batch to be fired off on two systems as this could contaminate data.

  17. RSV accurately reflect failed backup status, especially for any MS Azure platform related issue

    i.e.
We had a recent issue where are RSV status was all green and there were not backup failure alerts/notifications.
Yet they had been failing for weeks.
The VM was up and running as normal but the azure platform had an issue: hydration issue between Azure Service Management (Classic) model and Azure Resource Manager (ARM) model)
RSV accurately reflect failed backup status, especially for any MS Azure platform related issue

  18. Adding both major and minor versions to the VMsnapshot extension, so we can query based on full version not just the major number.

Given the following command we can see may different versions listed that are available to installed.
$ az vm extension image list --query '[*].[name, publisher, version]' --output table | sort -u | grep -i snapshot
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.30.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.33.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.34.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.36.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.37.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.38.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.39.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.40.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.42.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.43.0

For a given VM, the one below if from a sandbox account, I cannot find a way to get the minor release installed. The 'typeHandlerVersion': '1.0', only shows the major version.

    $ az vm extension…

  19. Could you please let me know, if the vm is in affinity group can we add to recovery service and it will take a successful backup for VM

Could you please let me know, if the vm is in affinity group can we add to recovery service and it will take a successful backup for VM ? Because this limitation is added in limitations?

  20. REST

Azure Web Console allows to make backups of Virtual Machines. This is useful because a backup of a VM may be recovered later and used. Other activities related to the management of backups are useful tool. Here is a complete list of activities we would like to perform out of the Azure Web Console, by using REST based web services. These APIs do not exist at current, and would like to see in the near future:
    - Request backup of a VM and check completion status (pending, completed, error…)
    - List available backups of a VM
    - Delete a backup …
