  2. Allow VM Extension to talk directly to vault without internet access

Many customers do not want to grant their IaaS VMs direct access to the internet. Forced tunneling prevents the Azure Backup Service from protecting Azure IaaS VMs. If the Azure Backup VM Extension was allowed to talk directly the Recovery Service Vault through internal traffic in the datacenter, VMs would not need Internet access for backups to complete successfully.

  3. Increase the limit of data disk number supported by azure backup

Azure backup supports up to 16 data disks attached to an Azure virtual machine for backup. Please remove the restriction or match the max data disks for G series

  5. Recovery Services: Allow restoring individual VHDs from restore point

Currently Recovery Services "Restore disks" restores all disks. It would be great if you could only restore selected individual disks.

E.g., right now I'm waiting for 128+50+1023 GB VHDs of a single VM being restored, and I wouldn't need the 1023GB one, so I have plenty of time to write this suggestion :)

  6. Ability to execute custom pre & post scripts as part of a Recovery Services backup snapshot

Provide functionality for Recovery Services to execute Pre and Post scripts during a backup snapshot. This could allow applications and databases to be consistently quiesced on non-VSS enabled operating systems like Linux. Perhaps this could be built into the WAAgent Backup Extension and provide accompanying templates scripts to guide users through the process.

  7. Azure backup of Azure IaaS VM to a different region

It would be ideal if we could push the Azure backup of our Azure IaaS Vms to a different region. This would give people a lot more peace of mind in the event of a datacentre failure.

  8. Backup On-Premises VM to Azure and Restore the VM in Azure

When creating a new machine an Option to select an backup for restore would be great.

  9. The VM backup operation should be able to be performed twice consecutively.

Azure IaaS VM Backup has to wait for the previous backup to be completed when successively triggering backups using "backup now" on the same VM.
If we try to get backups before and after maintenance, this specification is very painful.

At least, Azure IaaS VM Backup should be able to run the second backup immediately after the first snapshot is completed.

  10. About VM backup created in classic mode

We want to use backups made in classic mode available after switching to Resource Manager mode.

Now, When we move a VM from classic to Resource Manager mode, backups taken prior to migration will not migrate to newly migrated Resource Manager VM.

  11. Automatic polling for "Backup Pre-Check" status

In current, "Backup Pre-Check" will run in advance when IaaS VM backup is triggered.
Also, the "Backup Pre-Check" status will not be modified until the next backup job.

I think that remaining the former precheck status will cause some kind of confuse.
Thus, I hope a feature that automatic polling for "Backup Pre-Check" status will be implemented.

  12. A situation where the Recovery Services container failover to GRS storage

The following User Interfaces are required.

    · Implement the UI to check the actual operation.
    · Implement a demonstration UI.

  13. New-AzureRmRecoveryServicesBackupProtectionPolicy

The Cmdlet "New-AzureRmRecoveryServicesBackupProtectionPolicy" used to create a Backup Protection Policy, does not have an option to select the Time Zone. As of now the only workaround is to Run the Powershell commands, create the required Items and then update the Time Zone (which is blank) to the Correct One.

This is also detailed out at https://davidfleming.org/2018/03/30/azure-backup-a-walkthrough/.

  14. be able to query the retention period of on-demand vm backup

When we run on-demand vm backup, the retention period is not shown in any UI (e.g. Azure Portal, Azure PowerShell, Azure CLI, Azure REST API) currently.
If the retention period is queryable, backup data management will be more easier and convenient.

  15. Adding both major and minor versions to the VMsnapshot extension, so we can query based on full version not just the major number.

Given the following command we can see may different versions listed that are available to installed.
$ az vm extension image list --query '[*].[name, publisher, version]' --output table | sort -u | grep -i snapshot
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.30.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.33.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.34.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.36.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.37.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.38.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.39.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.40.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.42.0
    VMSnapshot Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices 1.0.43.0

For a given VM, the one below if from a sandbox account, I cannot find a way to get the minor release installed. The 'typeHandlerVersion': '1.0', only shows the major version.

    $ az vm extension…

  16. Backup Onpremise Workload and Restore on Azure VM

Dear Team, With Azure we have solution to backup on-premise Physical/Virtual Machines in Azure Storage Account but we want a solution to restore same backup on Azure VM rather then bringing our onpremise server up and restore the data. Please work on this idea as this will really help in additional manual work.

  17. Identify Backup Jobs for VMs with the same name in the same Recovery Services vault

If you have two VMs in the same subscription with the same name (in different Resource Groups), and you associate both to the same Recovery Services vault:

    - You can identify each one in the Backup Items list, since it tells you the Resource Group name.
    - You can not identify which Backup Job corresponds to which VM, since it only tells you the name of the VM.

I tried obtaining the Backup Job data using Azure CLI, but even then, I only can see the "Entity Friendly Name" of the VM.

  18. Make Azure VM restore one click

Here's an idea...how about you make restoring an existing VM one-click?
    I know..revolutionary idea.
The amount of unnecessary complexity involved in restoring a VM is simply ridiculous.
Im guessing 99.99% of users would just want to rollback an existing VM to a previous version.
They dont want to create a new VM. They dont want to create new disks in a different storage account.
They dont want to spend an hour in powershell trying to get blob copy to work puzzling over cryptic error messages.
How about you simplify the restore process because the current process is simply dreadful.

  19. Inconsistent experience when a user selects the backup goal

Current Azure backup configuration doesn't show an option to take files and folder & system state backup when a user selects the backup goal (workload running in) Azure. if user changes workload running option to on-premises, he can then see more options. which basically creates a confusion and some customers feel that they cant take files, folder and system state backup for Azure VM. please improve this experience and make it consistent when user selects either Azure or On-Premises

  20. Backup a DR replicated powered-off vm for long term archival

Allow backing up of a powered off replicated VM. The situation is such that we replicate our VMs to Azure for DR and leave them powered off. We would like to then backup the replicated copies of those vms directly from Azure to Azure backup so as to reduce bandwidth.
