Azure Backup

Welcome to the Azure Backup feedback forum! This is where we would like to hear your feedback and ideas on how we can improve our product.

How can we improve Azure Backup?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Backup On-Premises VM to Azure and Restore the VM in Azure

When creating a new machine an Option to select an backup for restore would be great.

  2. Exclude Disks from VM Backup

Currently it's not possible to exclude Disks from a Hyper-V VM backup. (except using the Exclude Pagefile Disk workaround) to exclude single disks from the backup.

The possibility to exclude disks from a hyper-v vm backup would be a great improvement in case you've really large fileservers or other workloads where another backup mechanism is in place or you simply dont want a backup because of temp data etc.

  3. Azure backup of Azure IaaS VM to a different region

It would be ideal if we could push the Azure backup of our Azure IaaS Vms to a different region. This would give people a lot more peace of mind in the event of a datacentre failure.

  4. Have option to Replace Existing VM when Restoring from Azure Backup

When restoring it would be great to be able to replace the existing VM you are restoring for. i.e keeping all the configuration, effectively just swapping the .Vhd's without the need to reconfigure Networks etc.

  5. Changing the managed disk name at the time of restore

Please add the capability of changing the managed disk name.
Fixed name makes it difficult to manage.

  6. [Azure Backup] Want to specify Backup Schedule Policy of Azure VM Backup at "local time" using Azure PowerShell

At present, backup schedule of backup policy using Azure PowerShell, we need to specify the "time", "time zone" in UTC.

Therefore, please add the function to be able to specify the "local time" (UTC + N) using Azure PowerShell.

  7. Unlock VMs Prior to Initiating Backups via Recovery Services Vault Job

If you lock a resource group containing VMs as ReadOnly, VMs in that resource group will fail to backup because they are locked.

Please provide an option to bypass ReadOnly locks for recovery services backup jobs.

  8. Allow VM Extension to talk directly to vault without internet access

Many customers do not want to grant their IaaS VMs direct access to the internet. Forced tunneling prevents the Azure Backup Service from protecting Azure IaaS VMs. If the Azure Backup VM Extension was allowed to talk directly the Recovery Service Vault through internal traffic in the datacenter, VMs would not need Internet access for backups to complete successfully.

  9. Visualize the status of replication to Recovery Services container of GRS storage

The following User Interfaces are required.
    · Implement the UI to check the actual operation.
    · Implement a demonstration UI.

  10. Restore managed disk VMs without Storage Account for staging

Currently, we should specify the Storage Account for staging purpose to restore the VMs with managed disk.
But the advantage of the managed disk is that we don't have to inform and control storage account permissions for the end users. The required RBAC permission for this operation is Storage Account Contributor which means the restore operator can perform anything for the storage account.
This prevents the customer from being free from Storage Account management.

  11. Increase the limit of data disk number supported by azure backup

Azure backup supports up to 16 data disks attached to an Azure virtual machine for backup. Please remove the restriction or match the max data disks for G series

  12. be able to query the retention period of on-demand vm backup

When we run on-demand vm backup, the retention period is not shown in any UI (e.g. Azure Portal, Azure PowerShell, Azure CLI, Azure REST API) currently.
If the retention period is queryable, backup data management will be more easier and convenient.

  13. Azure Virtual Machine scale sets Instances should and Azure Backup service

If scale sets are used by in Azure IAAS, it should be supported to back up its instances or single instance at least through Azure Backup service in same or other regions in a recovery vault.

  15. The VM backup operation should be able to be performed twice consecutively.

Azure IaaS VM Backup has to wait for the previous backup to be completed when successively triggering backups using "backup now" on the same VM.
If we try to get backups before and after maintenance, this specification is very painful.

At least, Azure IaaS VM Backup should be able to run the second backup immediately after the first snapshot is completed.

  16. About VM backup created in classic mode

We want to use backups made in classic mode available after switching to Resource Manager mode.

Now, When we move a VM from classic to Resource Manager mode, backups taken prior to migration will not migrate to newly migrated Resource Manager VM.

  17. Provide more control over restores (disk name, NIC name, Availability Sets etc)

When you restore a VM, it creates an automated name which is tens of digits long, and provides no obvious association with the VM. The same goes for the NIc. When environments have been deployed by ARM templates, they usually have a neat and concisely defined naming standard which goes out the window when restored.

Additionally, and crucially for mission critical systems, VMs that are in an Availability Set are not restored back in to their AS when they're restored, which given you (for reasons I just can't understand) can't add a VM to an AS after creation, the backup…

  18. on-demand backup to keep a seperate copy, along with shceduled VM backup retention

there should be an option to do on-demand backup as well, even though there is a scheduled backup of VM there. this would be helpful to recover the VM to desired state , even though corresponding scheduled VM backup is lost after retention period.

  19. Inconsistent experience when a user selects the backup goal

Current Azure backup configuration doesn't show an option to take files and folder & system state backup when a user selects the backup goal (workload running in) Azure. if user changes workload running option to on-premises, he can then see more options. which basically creates a confusion and some customers feel that they cant take files, folder and system state backup for Azure VM. please improve this experience and make it consistent when user selects either Azure or On-Premises

  20. Snapshot backup at VHD level

There is an option to take snapshot backup in AWS which will take VHD level backup like wise in Azure, there is no option to take root drive backup. It would be better if we have snapshot backup at VHD level (root drive), because it is really helpful when we plan for patching activity for Windows VMs
