Azure Backup

Welcome to the Azure Backup feedback forum! This is where we would like to hear your feedback and ideas on how we can improve our product.

How can we improve Azure Backup?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Option to delete specific recovery points

Add an option to delete individual recovery points. Alternatively if that is not possible add option to continue purging old backups according to the backup policy after server has been deleted\renamed\migrated (VNET migration).

  2. New-ObFileSpec to backup system state

I could not find a way to make a System State backup using powershell cmdlet New-OBFileSpec. On the GUI its available.
When using Windows server core, there's a need to use Powershell.

  3. Publish compression and churn rate for every protected source

For planning and cost control it would be great to have statistics on the compression and churn rate for every ptotected source and at the vault level, if you don't hacve the time to expose them in the UI just give us a way to programmatically (webservice or POSH) access that information.

  4. Exclusions based on minimatch patterns

I want to be able to exclude certain folders from backups by default and I want to be able to use wildcards to do it. Right now this is a nightmarish thing to do and the documentation is very scarce.

    Examples:

    c:\users\*\sources\repos\**\.git\
    c:\users\*\sources\**\node_modules\
    c:\users\*\sources\**\obj\
    c:\users\*\sources\**\packages\
    c:\users\*\sources\**\.vs\
    c:\users\*\sources\workspaces\**\tf$\

    c:\users\*\Dropbox*\
    c:\users\*\OneDrive*\
    c:\users\*\Google Drive*\

Having to manually configure these or to have scripts that try to continuously update the backup schedules on machines is madness.

  5. View backup size per IaaS VM

Currently it is only possible to see the total size of the backups in the vault.
It would be good if we could easily see the total size of the backup data for each IaaS VM as it would give a better picture for the backup costs, which if needed will allows to change the backup policy for a VM accordingly when needed.

  6. The VM backup operation should be able to be performed twice consecutively.

Azure IaaS VM Backup has to wait for the previous backup to be completed when successively triggering backups using "backup now" on the same VM.
If we try to get backups before and after maintenance, this specification is very painful.

At least, Azure IaaS VM Backup should be able to run the second backup immediately after the first snapshot is completed.

  7. Allow greater than daily backup of Azure Virtual Machine

The daily limitation of Azure Virtual Machine backups is very restrictive. It makes it difficult to meet any reasonable RPO from a backup strategy.

Even if our RPO is 24 hours, that means we have to have 100% backup success in order to maintain SLA.

Being able to back up more frequently would allow better RPO or greater achievement of SLA with managed risk of failed backups.

I really want to avoid using the in-VM agent to complete this task as it doesn't scale which is the whole point of using Azure Backup!

  8. About VM backup created in classic mode

We want to use backups made in classic mode available after switching to Resource Manager mode.

Now, When we move a VM from classic to Resource Manager mode, backups taken prior to migration will not migrate to newly migrated Resource Manager VM.

  9. Provide more control over restores (disk name, NIC name, Availability Sets etc)

When you restore a VM, it creates an automated name which is tens of digits long, and provides no obvious association with the VM. The same goes for the NIc. When environments have been deployed by ARM templates, they usually have a neat and concisely defined naming standard which goes out the window when restored.

Additionally, and crucially for mission critical systems, VMs that are in an Availability Set are not restored back in to their AS when they're restored, which given you (for reasons I just can't understand) can't add a VM to an AS after creation, the backup…

  10. Recovery Services: Allow restoring individual VHDs from restore point

Currently Recovery Services "Restore disks" restores all disks. It would be great if you could only restore selected individual disks.

E.g., right now I'm waiting for 128+50+1023 GB VHDs of a single VM being restored, and I wouldn't need the 1023GB one, so I have plenty of time to write this suggestion :)

  11. Support Backup of VM Guest Clusters with VHD Sets

It should be possible to backup VMs with shared VHDs. This is neccessary to relly support VM Guest Clusters.
Furthermore it should be allowed to use these Disks as Cluster Shared Volumes in the Guest Cluster.

  12. Backup Reporting and Notifications

Please provide a central location to view comprehensive backup success/failure logs and the ability to generate reports, spanning multiple backup vaults and regions. Ability to customise email notifications as well.

  13. make it possible to see when a recovery point / backup for an Azure VM expires.

When using recovery services vaults it is not currently possible to see when a recovery point is due to expire. This makes administration difficult as ad-hoc backups can be assigned individual retention periods and recovery points may have been taken using different policies.

  14. on-demand backup to keep a seperate copy, along with shceduled VM backup retention

there should be an option to do on-demand backup as well, even though there is a scheduled backup of VM there. this would be helpful to recover the VM to desired state , even though corresponding scheduled VM backup is lost after retention period.

  15. Support Volume Sizes That are higher than 1.7TB In Windows 2008 Server.

It looks like Azure Backup does not work with Volume Sizes that are higher than 1.7TB on Windows server 2008 R2 SP1. Many companies are still using Windows server 2008 out there and they would welcome this feature. Now it's available on Server 2012. Thanks.

  16. Segregation of Duties / Restrict ability to DELETE Backup Vault

In our main Azure instance we are backing up our on Prem VMs and our Cloud VMs. The concern is the Domain Admins have the ability to delete ALL our VMs both on Prem and in the Cloud and then proceed to delete the Azure Vault. We would like the ability to granularly control permission so that a user does not have the capability to Delete a Backup Vault. This doesn't appear to be a level control we can find within Azure without moving to a new Azure instance which adds other complications

  17. Support Clusterd File Servers

We have a clustered file server which we are backing up using Azure Backup. It works, but it isn't perfect, it would be nice if Azure Backup had better support for failover file clusters

  18. SharePoint Backup with Item Level Recovery

Please add SharePoint Backup. Also, when this is introduced it would be nice to have item level recovery built in so we do not have to restore an entire content database to retrieve one file.

  19. Inconsistent experience when a user selects the backup goal

Current Azure backup configuration doesn't show an option to take files and folder & system state backup when a user selects the backup goal (workload running in) Azure. if user changes workload running option to on-premises, he can then see more options. which basically creates a confusion and some customers feel that they cant take files, folder and system state backup for Azure VM. please improve this experience and make it consistent when user selects either Azure or On-Premises

  20. Support backup of files/folders from Bitlocker-protected volumes

Currently, backup of files/folders from Bitlocker-protected volumes is not supported (even if the agent allows picking those folders for backup and it probably works?).
Please add official support for backing up files/foldes from Bitlocker-protected volues.
