Site Recovery

Microsoft Azure Site Recovery Manager helps you automate protection and orchestrate recovery for your private clouds. In case of a disaster, users can initiate a recovery plan failover that can recover the virtual machines on the target site in orderly manner.

How can we improve Microsoft Azure Site Recovery Service?

  1. Site Recovery between Azure datacenters

I my VMs are all in one MS Azure datacenter, I want to have control over DR by replicating and being able to failover to one of the other Azure datacenters.

We have understood the requirements of this feature and have added it to our backlog. We will reach out to you for feedback as we move closer to a Preview release. In the meanwhile, if you have any specific requirements or asks, please leave a comment below.

    • ASR to support VMware to Hyper-V protection/migration

The ASR support for VMware to Hyper-V protection/migration scenario is under roadmap for a while now. Enterprise customers and hosting partners are requesting this scenario since Microsoft acquired InMage. Like in the VMware-to-Azure scenario, a near zero downtime protection/migration can be achieved using the same InMage Scout technology.

Customers and partners are requesting a Microsoft owned solution for VMware to Hyper-V migration and ASR is the perfect solution for this.

      • Data disk limit of 1TB

The size limit on data disks of 1TB is limiting usage of ASR for protecting workloads

        • Support for exisiting extended replication

Currently Extended replication is unsupported for Azure site recovery. Site recovery should fully support all features of server 2012 R2 hypervisors including extended replication.

Thank you for the feedbacks. Ensure that the experience requirements are mentioned in the comments. We have started looking into this.
Kindly email anbacker at Microsoft dot com so that as part of the early feature gathering – we can discuss and understand the key requirements.

          • Windows Azure Support for Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC)

Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC) is a state of the art HA technology for on premise world. It would be great to have support on Windows Azure, and specially to have support for SHARE DISKS. By supporting WSFC, Windows Azure would be the first IaaS platform that supports application HA!!

            • Support for offline replication data transfer from on premise to Azure

A feature that enables to faster, effective & secure export of large number of virtual machine replication storage using an external storage device and ship it to Azure for import.

              • Exclude disks from replication

Currently all the virtual machine disks gets replicated to the target site and there needs to be a mechanism to exclude disks like page-file while enabling replication for a virtual machine.

                • Automatically replicate the new disk

Currently ASR after enabling protection for a virtual machine any new disks that are added to the virtual machine doesn't get replicated.

This feature request is to support for a protected virtual machine to automatically replicate new disk.

Few requirements have come up around disks – addition of disks and exclusion of disks. We also heard around disk/volume re-size. We are working on providing these features – starting with exclude first.

                  • Where is the recovery service in the new portal?

Or the recovery service is not available in the new portal (and should be) or it is not easy to find (no good)

                    Cheers,

                    • Pass Parameters to Scripts in Recovery Plans

We are creating a lot of recovery plans for a customer. It would be very useful if we could create some standard scripts that we can pass parameters to in a recovery plan.

For example if we can create a standard script that tests the state of a database and when we create a Recovery Plan we add the script and pass it some parameter which could be the database name and instance name to test.

This would allow for a collection of offerings to be made available to Tenants looking for Recovery Scripts. It would avoid the need to…

                      • Need a way to estimate in advance the replication duration, Azure side cost and network bandwidth requirements

Need a way to estimate in advance the replication duration, Azure side cost for a given network bandwidth and select virtual machines / workloads for DR to Azure.
A tool (or Sizing Calculator) if available is good to run and get an estimate on cost and time taken to perform replication of workloads onto Azure based on certain input parameters - network bandwidth available, list of workloads to be migrated to Azure, etc.,

                          • Add endpoints in the VM Protection Properties - Enterprise to Azure

When VMs or physical servers are failed over to Azure, no endpoints are open by default. While endpoints can be opened by Azure Automation workflows, it would be more user friendly to offer the opportunity to enter endpoints to open on the VM configuration properties screen where the VM Size and vNet are set.

Currently this is possible using scripts. Let us know in the comments section if scripts is not enough and Why. We are reviewing the requirements and will address it as part of our backlog. Any more examples would be useful.

                              • Support long term retention or Backup integration

When using Azure Site Recovery from an on-prem Hyper-V host (without VMM/DPM), storing 24 hours of snapshots doesn't met business requirements for Backup.

                                Problem
Azure Backup and ASR can't protect the same workload (and Azure Backup doesn't protect on premise VM's)

                                Solution(s):
Allow ASR to store long term retention
                                or
Implement an integration into Azure Backup.

Notes: Given Azure backup DOES support backing up Azure VM's - if there was a way to schedule a backup of a test ASR VM that might work (as long as the test VM only spun up just long enough for the backup -…

                                  • Provide capability to create one or more Dev-Test environments

Create one ore more Dev-Test environments by failing over the replicated VMs and let them always run. Unlike a Test Failover, ASR would never cleanup this environment

Hi all. This is a important functionality we are looking forward to enable. Kindly give your example use cases and and any specific requirements. Please update them in the comments.

                                    • Local Redundant type Azure Storage support

Please support Local redundant type for Azure Site Recovery's Azure Storage.
Azure Site Recovery protect on-premise Hyper-V site's virtual machine against Disaster.
At disaster, Virtual Machine failover to Azure Datacenter far enough away.
To save money, I want to use Local Redundant Azure Storage on far enuph away for Azure Site Recovery.

We have started looking into this. Ensure that the experience requirements are mentioned in the comments.
Please email anbacker at Microsoft dot com so that as part of the early feature gathering we can capture the key requirements.

                                      • UEFI support for replicated VMs

Currently ASR does not allow for VMs with UEFI boot volumes to replicate. This has put our deployment to a halt because of this fact. I would like to see future versions support UEFI volumes.

                                        • Support for localized OS configuration on the source server in Physical/VM-to-VMware scenario

Currently, ASR 'between VMware sites' scenario doesn't support Non-English OS on protected servers. A Customer is looking for protecting non-English language primarily on Windows but also Redhat and Oracle Linux from the sites in Germany, Italy and France.
