  1. Azure portal blades are impossible to navigate. Please add sizing controls to better navigate.

The blades on the portal are very poor in performance and navigation controls. Please improve the blade navigation by adding sizing controls. The technologies and solutions are great, but the portal experience leaves the users abandoning the idea.

  2. Bug in associate shcedule to a runbook through cmdlet Register-AzureRmAutomationScheduledRunbook

You can define inconsistent types between runbook parameter type and the type of the parameter associated with a schedule. For example, if you have a runbook RB0, it has a parameter P0 of type Boolean.
You can actually use Register-AzureRmAutomationScheduledRunbook cmdlet to associate a schedule with parameter P0 of a string type.

  3. Alert for internal job error of Runbook

Currently there is no alerting mechanism to alert when jobs in automation accounts get Completed with errors. The job shows completed, which means the runbook script has executed ok, but when we go inside the job we can see errors. There should be some alerting configured to know that the Automation job has completed with errors.

  4. I would like to see a circle graph demonstrating the degree of compliance.

Just like the Automation resource page, a circle graph that demonstrates degree of compliance.

Thanks for the feedback. This is something we’ve been planning to add to the service. Monitoring\compliance for Automation. Please share if you have any specifc area you’d want to have captured that will impact your overall Automation Compliance.

  5. UI is Bad.

I'm trying to essentially clone an existing runbook. Seems like the only way to do is save it out. Save is greyed out and I have no freaking idea how to activate it.

    planned  ·  Beth Cooper responded

Thank you for posting this and sorry to hear that you are having difficulties with the UX.

A feature that we are planning to work on in the next couple of months is a “Save As” feature which would allow you to create a copy of the runbook with a different name. This should allow you to clone a runbook without exporting and re-importing with a new name.

You should expect to see save greyed out until there is a change in the runbook content. If this is not the case, its possible that you are hitting a bug. Can you try the following:
    1. Confirm save remains greyed out even after there are modifications to the runbook
    2. If save does remain greyed out, then publish the runbook or copy the text if it is textual (so you don’t lose your changes) and then start a clean browser session. …

  6. certificate

Windows does not let you export a private key certificate without a password, but there does not seem to be any way to specify a password when using ARM. I'm not sure why the ARM resource requires a base64 string--it would make much more sense to just reference a certificate in an existing Key Vault, like the Compute team does.

  7. Update Management - Backup to Recovery Services Vault

The first I want to do before running updates on my Azure servers is back them up, yet there is no option in Update Management to do this. They are already part of a Recovery Services Vault, but I want to back them up immediately before the updates are applied.

I can code this in a 'pre-task' runbook, but what if one or more VMs fail to backup - there is no (apparent) way of removing that VM from the scope of the update deployment dynamically.

When you choose the option "Update Azure modules" update ALL the Microsoft modules not just the Azure Core modules. Alternatively display for which modules there are updates available.

  9. Enable Variable groups in Azure Automation Account

Variables are key for runbooks in Azure. As more and more variables evolve as the runbook evolves or the number of runbooks increase, it will be easier to manage variables with "Variable Groups".

The Variable Group as such should be exposed in the runbook as a json, for example. I can have 20 variables in a variable Group and i can import with something like "Get-AutomationVariableGroup" similar to Get-AutomationVariable.

Once i get the json/object with Get-AutomationVariableGroup we can use any variable from the Group as needed in the Runbook.

  11. source control

Add source control for python runbooks in VS Online..

When syncing from our VS online repo, the .py files get the following error.

Exception: Cannot validate argument on parameter 'Type'. The argument "Python2" does not belong to the set "Graph,PowerShell,PowerShellWorkflow" specified by the ValidateSet attribute. Supply an argument that is in the set and then try the command again.

  15. Please make the label for each activity display more characters and lines

In runbook designer, the label for each activity is too small in length, only allows 11-15 characters, could you please make it allow more characters showing. This will help to know what each activity does at a glance in runbook designer.

Currently the words wrapped and cut off. it is hard to read especially when calling child runbook, we want to know what child runbook name is , but it wrapped and cut off, we will have to click it to display the whole label.

  16. SQL [DBNULL] datatype breaks calling runbooks

When a runbook uses sqlcmd and returns a dataset, and that dataset has a [DBNULL] data type (A column IS NULL in the sql return), the calling runbook errors out.
    Example:
2 runbooks. One runs in azure, another runs on Hybrid worker. The azure runbook starts the Hybrid worker runbook. The hybrid worker runbook does a SQL query using invoke-sqlcmd. The SQL query returns a dataset which has a NULL value in one of the columns. That return is then sent to the calling runbook in Azure.

    Result:
I forget the failure, but it appears JSON can't format it correctly.

  17. Resource Health for Azure Automation

Azure Automation does not have Resource Health like as Virtual Machine.
In Oct 25 to Oct 28, huge issue for Automation has occurred. 'Service Health alert' generated after Oct 28.
If there is Resource Health for Azure Automation, we can know the issue happens in Azure Automation.
Do you have a plan for using Resource Health?

  18. Fix Azure Automation Modules Repository to support Side by Side versioning of modules

Azure Automation Modules repository currently only supports 1 version of a module with the same name. This breaks Side by Side module versioning with Powershell DSC. Please add support for uploading multiple versions of modues.

  19. Extend Inventory with standard asset information (CPU, RAM,...)

Many companies are still struggling with the old cmdb approaches. The combination of Azure Arc and Inventory from Automation creates here modern approaches. But additional information, at least like CPU, Ram and disks would be really helpful here.
