Automation

Azure Automation allows you to automate the creation, monitoring, deployment, and maintenance of resources in your Azure environment using a highly-available workflow execution engine. Orchestrate time-consuming, error-prone, and frequently repeated tasks against Azure and third party systems to decrease time to value for your cloud operations.

  1. Source Control integration - preserve logging settings

I've noticed that every time Azure Automation syncs up a new version of the runbook (PowerShell script pulled from an Azure DevOps repo) it resets the Logging\Tracing configuration. Is it possible to preserve these settings during sync?

  2. Create combobox if input parameter has ValidateSet for PowerShell

Would be cool if input parameters using ValidateSet would show graphically as a drop down menu. Just like booleans do today.

    Example:
    [Parameter(Mandatory = $false)]
    [ValidateSet('Domain','Group')]
    [string] $UsersFromTenantDetectionMethod = [string]$('Domain')

Would create a combobox / drop down menu with two options, "Domain" and "Group"

  3. Not possible to add a runbook from the PowerShell Gallery using PowerShell

    Hi,

At the moment I'm Automating workloads in Azure. In a powershell script I want to add an Automation Account to an Azure subscription. Part of the Automation Account are Runbooks. You can add a runbook to Azure Automation by creating a new one or by importing an existing runbook from a file or the Runbooks Gallery. To Import a Runbook you can use the script down below.

    $automationAccountName = "AutomationAccount"
    $runbookName = "Sample_TestRunbook"
    $scriptPath = "C:\Runbooks\Sample_TestRunbook.ps1"
    $RGName = "ResourceGroup"

    Import-AzureRMAutomationRunbook -Name $runbookName -Path $scriptPath `
    -ResourceGroupName $RGName -AutomationAccountName $automationAccountName `
    -Type PowerShellWorkflow

    With the Import-AzureRMAutomationRunbook command you're not allowed…

  4. Enable Variable groups in Azure Automation Account

Variables are key for runbooks in Azure. As more and more variables evolve as the runbook evolves or the number of runbooks increase, it will be easier to manage variables with "Variable Groups".

The Variable Group as such should be exposed in the runbook as a json, for example. I can have 20 variables in a variable Group and i can import with something like "Get-AutomationVariableGroup" similar to Get-AutomationVariable.

Once i get the json/object with Get-AutomationVariableGroup we can use any variable from the Group as needed in the Runbook.

  5. Please make the label for each activity display more characters and lines

In runbook designer, the label for each activity is too small in length, only allows 11-15 characters, could you please make it allow more characters showing. This will help to know what each activity does at a glance in runbook designer.

Currently the words wrapped and cut off. it is hard to read especially when calling child runbook, we want to know what child runbook name is , but it wrapped and cut off, we will have to click it to display the whole label.

  6. Editor and Test Pane each 50% width

When editing and testing a runbook, scrolling horizontally each time becomes a chore. Could we have the test pane side by side with the editor at half the window width?

  8. SQL [DBNULL] datatype breaks calling runbooks

When a runbook uses sqlcmd and returns a dataset, and that dataset has a [DBNULL] data type (A column IS NULL in the sql return), the calling runbook errors out.
    Example:
2 runbooks. One runs in azure, another runs on Hybrid worker. The azure runbook starts the Hybrid worker runbook. The hybrid worker runbook does a SQL query using invoke-sqlcmd. The SQL query returns a dataset which has a NULL value in one of the columns. That return is then sent to the calling runbook in Azure.

    Result:
I forget the failure, but it appears JSON can't format it correctly.

  9. Update Azure Module option for ALL the MS modules

When you choose the option "Update Azure modules" update ALL the Microsoft modules not just the Azure Core modules. Alternatively display for which modules there are updates available.

  10. Proper cleanup - When Application(Service Principal) quota has exceeded for an AAD, automation should clean up

Proper cleanup - When Application(Service Principal) quota has exceeded for an AAD, automation should clean up properly. Instead it gives an error in the notification saying application quota has exceeded (Creating Applications in the AAD quota has exceeded), but then it proceeds to create the automation account without the most important and essential "Run As Account" not being created in AAD.

  11. Start/Stop VMs during off-hours solution - VMs in multiple subscriptions

    Hello All,

I have some VMs in Production subscription and some in Devtest subscription. Update Management solution conveniently allows to configure all VMs report into a single shared Log Analytics workspace and update all VMs from a single automation account. Very nice! Lovely!

Now, as far as Start / Stop VMs solution is concerned, it is configured based using variables containing resource group names and VMs names. However, resource groups with the same name can exist in multiple subscriptions! (And VMs can have identical names, naturally). So, it appears that Start/Stop VM solution is not subscription-aware (as Update Management is)…

  12. Please modify the DSC Installation Scripts for linux to not run things out of /tmp

CIS hardening techniques suggests to mark /tmp with noexec. If one does this, then they cannot register the VM with Azure Automation DSC as the python install scripts look to be running things out of /tmp.

The error that is produced in the logs is misleading as well.

2019/05/30 19:34:24 ERROR:Checking for ctypes python module...Error: Python does not support ctypes on this system. Please install the ctypes module for Python or upgrade to a newer version of python that comes with the ctypes module.

ctypes isn't the issue here, noexec being placed on /tmp is.

    Thanks!

  15. Update Management - Backup to Recovery Services Vault

The first I want to do before running updates on my Azure servers is back them up, yet there is no option in Update Management to do this. They are already part of a Recovery Services Vault, but I want to back them up immediately before the updates are applied.

I can code this in a 'pre-task' runbook, but what if one or more VMs fail to backup - there is no (apparent) way of removing that VM from the scope of the update deployment dynamically.

  16. certificate

Windows does not let you export a private key certificate without a password, but there does not seem to be any way to specify a password when using ARM. I'm not sure why the ARM resource requires a base64 string--it would make much more sense to just reference a certificate in an existing Key Vault, like the Compute team does.

  17. source control

Add source control for python runbooks in VS Online..

When syncing from our VS online repo, the .py files get the following error.

Exception: Cannot validate argument on parameter 'Type'. The argument "Python2" does not belong to the set "Graph,PowerShell,PowerShellWorkflow" specified by the ValidateSet attribute. Supply an argument that is in the set and then try the command again.
