Automation

Azure Automation allows you to automate the creation, monitoring, deployment, and maintenance of resources in your Azure environment using a highly-available workflow execution engine. Orchestrate time-consuming, error-prone, and frequently repeated tasks against Azure and third party systems to decrease time to value for your cloud operations.

  1. Start-AzAutomationSourceControlSyncJob Add SyncType parameter to invoke 'Incremental' syncs

The Start-AzAutomationSourceControlSyncJob function only triggers a FullSync from a connected Azure DevOps Repo, which can sometimes take a long time if you have lots of runbooks in a repo. Can we add a pramater to this to trigger an optional incremental sync?

    Use Case
The Azure Automation account has this option as a feature toggle but not something that can be triggered ad-hoc after a full sync outside of Azure Automation. We don't want to use the AutoSync feature as we want to control the upload of runbooks via Azure DevOps pipelines with approvals etc. then trigger a sync job…

  2. PowerSTIG Module Import in Azure Automation

The PowerSTIG module is unable to be imported using the Azure Automation blade inside the Azure Portal. I would like to have the ability to import the PowerSTIG module and all required dependencies via the Azure Portal. Currently, to get this to work all required dependencies have to be imported using PowerShell.

  3. SQL [DBNULL] datatype breaks calling runbooks

When a runbook uses sqlcmd and returns a dataset, and that dataset has a [DBNULL] data type (A column IS NULL in the sql return), the calling runbook errors out.
    Example:
2 runbooks. One runs in azure, another runs on Hybrid worker. The azure runbook starts the Hybrid worker runbook. The hybrid worker runbook does a SQL query using invoke-sqlcmd. The SQL query returns a dataset which has a NULL value in one of the columns. That return is then sent to the calling runbook in Azure.

    Result:
I forget the failure, but it appears JSON can't format it correctly.

  4. Runbook designer activity links overlap

in runbook designer, if an activity has more than a link point to it from two other sources, the link often overlaps.
Could you make each link separate with each other so that we know clearly where it comes from .

    Thanks

  5. Please make the label for each activity display more characters and lines

In runbook designer, the label for each activity is too small in length, only allows 11-15 characters, could you please make it allow more characters showing. This will help to know what each activity does at a glance in runbook designer.

Currently the words wrapped and cut off. it is hard to read especially when calling child runbook, we want to know what child runbook name is , but it wrapped and cut off, we will have to click it to display the whole label.

  6. Signed runbooks for Azure cloud platform worker

Please add support to run only signed Runbooks so that we can be sure that no modifications are made for our runbooks.
It should work not only on Hybrid worker as it is now, but also on Azure cloud platform worker.
We should be able to provide our certificates for signature checks (better via KeyVault integration).

There is no such API to get errors of runbook.

  9. Start/Stop VMs during off-hours solution - VMs in multiple subscriptions

    Hello All,

I have some VMs in Production subscription and some in Devtest subscription. Update Management solution conveniently allows to configure all VMs report into a single shared Log Analytics workspace and update all VMs from a single automation account. Very nice! Lovely!

Now, as far as Start / Stop VMs solution is concerned, it is configured based using variables containing resource group names and VMs names. However, resource groups with the same name can exist in multiple subscriptions! (And VMs can have identical names, naturally). So, it appears that Start/Stop VM solution is not subscription-aware (as Update Management is)…

  10. Source Control integration - preserve logging settings

I've noticed that every time Azure Automation syncs up a new version of the runbook (PowerShell script pulled from an Azure DevOps repo) it resets the Logging\Tracing configuration. Is it possible to preserve these settings during sync?

  11. Schedule for Day of the week

Customer wants to configure schedule about Day of the week.
For example, customer wants to set execution at Second Tuesday.

Cx will apply Windows Update at Second Wednesday, so before update, they want to execute Runbook.
Is there a plan for this configuration?

  14. Cannot modify Parameters when choosing Action Type "Automation Runbook" in Action Groups

    Steps to recreate:
    1) create a runbook, give it a few parameters
    2) publish runbook
    3) create a new alert, action group
    4) choose the action type "Automation Runbook"
    5) Choose "User" for "Runbook source"
    6) Select subscription, automation account and runbook

It will not allow me to configure parameters. It keeps closing the dialog instead. In the attached image, no parameters are configured. As soon as I click on "Configure parameters" the side dialog closes.

  17. Not possible to add a runbook from the PowerShell Gallery using PowerShell

    Hi,

At the moment I'm Automating workloads in Azure. In a powershell script I want to add an Automation Account to an Azure subscription. Part of the Automation Account are Runbooks. You can add a runbook to Azure Automation by creating a new one or by importing an existing runbook from a file or the Runbooks Gallery. To Import a Runbook you can use the script down below.

    $automationAccountName = "AutomationAccount"
    $runbookName = "Sample_TestRunbook"
    $scriptPath = "C:\Runbooks\Sample_TestRunbook.ps1"
    $RGName = "ResourceGroup"

    Import-AzureRMAutomationRunbook -Name $runbookName -Path $scriptPath `
    -ResourceGroupName $RGName -AutomationAccountName $automationAccountName `
    -Type PowerShellWorkflow

    With the Import-AzureRMAutomationRunbook command you're not allowed…

  18. When executing a Runbook with switch parameters, provide a truly boolean option

When you execute a PowerShell runbook that has a Sitch parameter, you have to provide either the string "true" or the string "false" to set the value for the parameter.
Instead, I think you should be presented with a radio button or a checkbox, Either the switch parameter is used, and thus is $true or it isn't used and the value is $false

  19. Please modify the DSC Installation Scripts for linux to not run things out of /tmp

CIS hardening techniques suggests to mark /tmp with noexec. If one does this, then they cannot register the VM with Azure Automation DSC as the python install scripts look to be running things out of /tmp.

The error that is produced in the logs is misleading as well.

2019/05/30 19:34:24 ERROR:Checking for ctypes python module...Error: Python does not support ctypes on this system. Please install the ctypes module for Python or upgrade to a newer version of python that comes with the ctypes module.

ctypes isn't the issue here, noexec being placed on /tmp is.

    Thanks!
