Automation

Azure Automation allows you to automate the creation, monitoring, deployment, and maintenance of resources in your Azure environment using a highly-available workflow execution engine. Orchestrate time-consuming, error-prone, and frequently repeated tasks against Azure and third party systems to decrease time to value for your cloud operations.

  1. Automate setting up automation accounts and insert code for connection into new scripts

    When setting up a run book you already set a subscription and automation account so setting up a connection should be simple but it is not unless you know the exact code to use. This is not easy to find as many of the help links embedded in the run book blade point to outdated information. Also, googling comes up with all sorts of variations due to many differences between Azure versions ,and Powershell versions and script types.
    The graphical option is even more confusing to use.

  2. Runbook-Editor: Add #region-#endregion

    Runbook-Editor: Please add #region-#endregion support to the runbook-editor. This would improve working with large runbooks a lot.

  3. Module-Installations are included in "Job Statistics"-Widget but excluded in "Jobs"-List

    When i install a module, the job-count is incrementing. When i click on the widget to see the list jobs, the numbers don't add up.

    Please list the module-installations in the "Jobs"-List.
    If this cannot be done pls exclude the module-installation from "Jobs Statistics".

    Right now the UI is very confusing.

  4. Support Variable strings longer than 512 characters in the UX

    the UX should not limit what is possible to from Set-AutomationVariable

    currently the UI limits a string variable to 512 characters but you set a longer string via the Set-AutomationVariable

  5. Add background job to refresh assets on the Runbook Editor blade

    Add a job to refresh assets so if an asset is added in another browser tab you don't have to leave the editing blade to see the assets in the editor blade

  6. Add a refresh button to Jobs lists.

    Neither the "main" job list or the specific job lists on each runbook has a refresh button.
    Many other pages does.

    I would like to see a refresh button on the job list (since it is the page I refresh the most)

    Is the design relying on the auto refresh instead? .. it does not seem to update very fast.

    thanks

    We just added a refresh button to the runbook/jobs list (navigate to your runbook, select jobs, view refresh button at top).

    We also have a separate item to track adding the refresh button to the list of all the jobs in the Automation account, but have not yet begun work on adding it.

  7. UI is Bad.

    I'm trying to essentially clone an existing runbook. Seems like the only way to do is save it out. Save is greyed out and I have no freaking idea how to activate it.

    planned  ·  Beth Cooper responded

    Thank you for posting this and sorry to hear that you are having difficulties with the UX.

    A feature that we are planning to work on in the next couple of months is a “Save As” feature which would allow you to create a copy of the runbook with a different name. This should allow you to clone a runbook without exporting and re-importing with a new name.

    You should expect to see save greyed out until there is a change in the runbook content. If this is not the case, its possible that you are hitting a bug. Can you try the following:
    1. Confirm save remains greyed out even after there are modifications to the runbook
    2. If save does remain greyed out, then publish the runbook or copy the text if it is textual (so you don’t lose your changes) and then start a clean browser session. …

  8. Show duration in job summary

    In the portal runbook job summary it is difficult to tell how long a runbook needed to finish. Please provide a minutes:seconds duration for a quick glance understanding of execution performance.

    Thanks for this suggestion. Right now, you can see the start and end times but need to compute the duration yourself.

  11. UI Improvements

    The current portal implementation of jobs and outputs is suboptimal. When there are many jobs, clicking on the "jobs" "box" auto-scrolls down to the oldest one - imho that's wrong, theres a bigger chance that I'm interested in the newest one than the oldest one. Also, there's no refresh button, so the only way to see if any new jobs have been fired is to close the blade and click "jobs" again (causing me to have to scroll up repeatedly when waiting for a job to kick off.

    Further, the "all streams" should have the same auto-scroll feature as the…

    We have currently fixed:
    1. Modify jobs list so that it does not scroll to the bottom of the page
    2. Added a refresh button to the streams blade (note this doesn’t help if you have more than 50 streams so we are still looking at other ways to improve viewing active streams)

    I’m leaving this open to track further improvements to the job and streams blades.

  12. Connection fields for modules are not updated

    I have a module that has a connection. That connection has 3 fields in it. Import the module in SMA. I can see the connection imported by that module and I can create connections. I update my module and in the definition for the connection I add 2 more fields. I logon to the Azure Portal. Remove my old module and import the new one with the updated connection that has 5 fields in total. When I try to create a new connection of the type in my module I can see only the 3 fields that were in my…

    Thanks for this suggestion. Yes, as you mentioned & Joe explained this is a known issue in SMA and Azure Automation, but there are workarounds now.
    We can use this request to track making connection types mutable.

  13. Offer Validated Testing Parameter Values From Assets

    In the dialog to enter parameter values when starting a runbook, it would be convenient to offer validated values where those can be inferred by type or otherwise. For example, if the parameter type is "System.Management.Automation.PSCredential", give me an intellisense-like dropdown of the credential assets I've defined in the automation account to choose from. I think this would help make testing faster and easier to avoid trial and error when possible.

    Thanks Noah! We can investigate selecting assets as input parameters to runbooks.

  14. Add Filter Search to Insert Dialogs

    When using "Insert" to insert a setting or activity, it would be nice to have a full-text search filter to quickly narrow down results. Given that the Azure module has hundreds of activities already, will become increasingly tedious to locate what you want. This also fits with requests for intellisense and authoring tooling in VS or ISE.

  15. Allow to enter an AAD user account when manually start a runbook, or allow to use the credentials of the signed-in user (AAD token)

    Allow to enter an AAD user account when manually start a runbook (instead of store it as Asset), or allow to use the credentials of the signed-in user (reuse the AAD issued access token)

    Thanks for the feedback! We will look into making authentication to Azure easier and will take this suggestion into consideration.

  16. Make "Operation status" pane togglable

    In general the "Operation status" pane is a good idea, but it gets really tiresome that you have to close and close and re-close succeeded operations etc.
    It should definately be togglable weather you want to see running/completed operations or not.

    Hi Anders,

    You are talking about the notifications that show up as you create/delete runbooks, start jobs, etc.? Let me know if I’m misunderstanding the request.

    This is really how the framework works, but I could definitely see adding a configuration step to turn off notifications, especially when you are editing and testing runbooks.

    Thanks,
    Beth

  17. Display Name for Custom Connection Type Properties

    With the current Connection Type extensibility, giving 'friendly' names to the properties within the type is not possible, resulting in unfriendly names displayed to the user when creating a new Connection. Supporting Text Hints would also be nice, though less necessary.

    ie:
    {
    "ConnectionFields": [

    {

    "IsEncrypted": false,
    "IsOptional": false,
    "Name": "ServiceBusNamespaceURL",
    "DisplayName": "Service Bus Namespace URL",
    &quot;Hint&quot;: &quot;ie: <a rel="nofollow noreferrer" href="https://[namespace].servicebus.windows.net&quot;">https://[namespace].servicebus.windows.net&quot;</a>,
    &quot;TypeName&quot;: &quot;System.String&quot;
    },
