Diagnostics and Monitoring

  1. Add way to clean old logs

Diagnostic data can currently be logged to a storage account. Data is for example logged to multiple WADMetrics tables.

After a while, these can grow quiet big. So it would be great to be able to specify a maximum log size (x GB) or a maximum log age (x days). If the log size or maximum is exceeded, the oldest entries would automatically be deleted.

  2. When there is a scaling alert it should tell me which one of my rules cause the scaling up or down.

When I get an email scale up or down alert for my site. I have no idea which one of my rules has caused the action. It could have been CPU, Memory, or any one of my scale up metrics I am monitoring. It would be really nice to know which one it is.

  3. Audit and IT fundamental services

Provide unalterable audit logs for services like ACS.

Provide management stats and backup/recovery mechanisms and services for all provided services.

Thanks for the feedback. We’ll look into this. Each service has their own auditing capabilities, but we can consider standardization, if that would be helpful for you. Let us know if you have any specifics you’re looking for or ways this could help you.

  4. Make alerts more actionable (e.g. "Open a support ticket")

This was feedback given in the mvp summit session on the current (Old-New) portal.

When I have an alert or something is 'limited' that shows me the red exclamation point I expect to be able to "do something" or "go somewhere for help".

I would love to get "this problem is causing your service to be down - go here to open up a support ticket for that".

I also expect any 'limited' message to be archived so that I can go back to them. Many times I've had 'limited' show up and I send a message to someone about…

  5. Increase Azure Alert Rule Description lenght

Alert rule description in Azure Alerts is currently limited to 128 characters.
In OMS Alert description doesn’t seem to have a limit?
Soon OMS Alerts will be auto extended in to Azure Alerts and I have descriptions of alerts that are way longer than 128 characters.

They cant be short because the team that get the alert needs to understand what to do with it.
I cant explain it with less characters than a tweet.

  6. Fix alert rules

Alert rules that use a time metric like CPU time or average response time are incorrect.

Setting a threshold of 1.5 seconds updates the metric graph correctly, showing a dotted line at the 1.5 second mark - however the test is actually set to a threshold of 1.5 milliseconds. You can confirm this by viewing the alert in the old portal, and in the fact that even though the dotted line remains above the blue line in the graph the whole time, the alert is still considered active.

    Please fix it

Also, if you can make it more clear where…

  7. Implement syslog events out of azure

create the capability to syslog out events of all activities within a given subscription in the Azure infrastructure (create/change/delete VM, network security group, endpoints, users, etc.)

  8. Azure Policy to enforce enabling sending logs to Log Analytics

Give us the ability to automatically send logs for a given resource type to an OMS workspace. I understand there are ways to configure existing resources to send logs to OMS and we can configure this as part of ARM templates. However, many people would prefer if this could be applied as policy, much like tagging. The other ways rely on the users to configure things themselves when they deploy resources or rely on predefined ARM templates which is too constricting.

  9. A record of the activation push to this category of Activity log, if Metric Alert is activated.(Microsoft.Insights/MetricAlerts)

I understand that each time a supported Azure alert type 'activates', or the conditions are met to generate a notification, a record of the activation is also pushed to this category of the Activity Log.

However,New Metric Alert activation does not recorded to this category of Activity log. (Also Log Analytics Alert is same as New Metric Alert.)

I would like to know when the all kind of alert was activated from Activity log.

  10. Export chart data

The ability to export the data from a chart would really help when trying to analyse usage data.

  11. WAD/LAD config policy apply to resource group

Configuring the Windows/Linux diagnostic extensions is quite complicated. It would be great if we had the ability to write a diagnostic policy and be able to apply it to all resources within a Resource Group instead of configuring each individual resource.

  12. Raise the Alert Monitor Limit per Azure Subscription

Currently, there is a ten alert limit for cloud services per subscription in Azure. This is functionally useless. We do four deployments per app for geo-redundancy, and if we want to monitor three different things on all our boxes, we're already over the limit. And we have dozens of apps.

Also, if you do increase the alert count, considering enabling an option to change monitoring level to verbose using the API, so we can automate the creation of monitors for memory usage.

  13. AZURE Admin Login Notifications by email or SMS.

I have been plagued by unbelievable security issues with my ISP MediaTemple for more than 2yrs now. After contacting more than 10 ISP's over a 1yr period it seems that there is no functionality in the marketplace to allow the primary ADMIN of a ISP cloud/webhosting account, in this case the admin user of a Azure, to be notified by SMS or email when someone logs into the admin account to view/modify settings.

An example. Someone sniffed my packets and passwords. Logged into my admin account. Changed DNS and Zone file records and put a MX redirect so that all…

  14. Change Instance Size dynamically on Auto scaling.

Can we also increase decrease Instance size while auto scaling . For example lets say I have some instances and I want whenever CPU load is less I want small size instances to be running if CPU load increases then instance size should increase to large size VM(instance).

  15. Boot diagnostics screen autorefresh

It would be very useful, Boot diagnostics screen made auto refresh every 5 or 10 sec.

  16. Document your metrics

It's extremely frustrating that there is no documentation that explains what your metrics actually are.

    e.g.
For VM disk read operations: is it the sum across all volumes, the average, or the max, etc?

For Azure App Plans with multiple instances: if I have 10 machines, you report one single metric for CPU usage, and the others. Do you average? Sum? Max?

All of this should be clearly documented.

The following page simply gives the description for the metric as "Disk Read IOPS" - what disk? Just one disk? All disks? The sum of all disks? The average?

  17. Provide event streaming API on the Diagnostics Monitor

I need more real-time monitoring than currently is possible. The DiagnosticsMonitor should stream the events it captures to an attached listner.
We can then create a custom listner which registers with the diagnotics monitor for all or some specific events we are interested in.
we are then, code wise, free to transport that info to the storage container of our choosing.
It also opens up the possibilities of online service monitoring sites to provide a custom listner which you as a customer can deploy with your app.
This also has the benefit that you don't have to provide keys to…

    started  ·  Stephen Siciliano responded

Earlier this year we released the ability to stream logs from Windows Azure Websites. However this capability does not yet exist for other services (such as Cloud Services).

  18. Allow accents (and other special caracters), at least on descriptions

For example when creating an alert rule on a web hosting plan, it hurts when we must write in french "Memoire depasse 90 pourcent" instead of "Mémoire dépasse 90 %" (see accents and % caracter).

  19. native azure splunk integration

Microsoft should update Azure Monitor's integration with Splunk Cloud. Clients should have the ability to enable push-button integration with few inputs. The current integration approach with Splunk Cloud relies on custom-built architecture which is not officially supported by either Microsoft nor Splunk.

  20. Metrics from VM Guest OS in Azure Monitor

Guest OS Metrics on a VM is exposed in Classic with diagnostics enabled but they are not exposed in the new Azure Monitor solution. Please expose Guest OS Metrics in Azure Monitor as well, we monitor onprem using SCOM and newer versions of Azure Management Pack does not support classic anymore.
