Diagnostics and Monitoring

  1. Azure Diagnostics stopped the World Wide Web Publishing Service

Last night during what I assume was an auto-update of the Azure Diagnostics service on a Windows Server 2012 VM in Azure, it stopped our World Wide Web Publishing Service and did not restart it. This resulted in a service disruption.

I've attached the Event Log error.

Why did it need to stop the WWW service?
Is there some way to know in advance if it's going to do this, or control when it happens?

  2. Consistent Resource Group casing across all Azure services

There appears to be different casing applied to Resource Group names depending on whether they are viewed in the Resource Group blade or the Monitor Blade when a selecting target for alerting.

When selecting targets to view in the Monitor blade > Create Rule, Resource Groups are duplicated with different casing e.g.

    RESOURCE-GROUP-NAME-RG

    appvm01-OSDisk

    appvm01/MicrosoftMonitoringAgent

    Resource-Group-Name-RG

    appvm01

    appvm01/CustomScriptExtension

There does not seem to be any consistency as to which resources inherit which casing but it means multiple alert rules have to be configured for each VM as a single Resource Group is unable to be targetted to capture VM, disk,…

  3. Have the diagnostics engine push remaining data to storage on shutdown

I'd like to see the Diagnostics agent be aware of a graceful shutdown scenario (instance count being lowered for example) and if it has been working on a schedule to push data to storage attempt to push any data since the last scheduled transfer over before the system is fully shutdown.

If you have a schedule set up to move data every 5 or 10 minutes (or really any time schedule that isn't in the seconds) you could considerable amount of data if the role is shutdown between scheduled pushes. It would be nice if an attempt is actually made…

Thank you for the suggestion. This seems like a reasonable way to make sure that you collect all of the diagnostic data from your virtual machines. I have passed this idea on to the WAD team.

  4. Alerts should allow subtraction of two alerts

Alerts should allow subtraction of two metrics. It's a lot easier and more accurate to measure deltas instead of absolute numbers. For example, the sum of outgoing bytes from an Azure EventHub should equal the sum of incoming bytes. It is kind of useless to just have an absolute metric like outgoing bytes > X since there are quieter periods during evening where it may not be that high.

  5. data on metrics disappear after migrate to new subscription

We migrate our resource group to new subscription. But the data before migration on service bus metrics disappear.

We confirmed with product group. They say it is by designed behavior. But it is not convenient to customer. Please help improve the product.

  6. resolve

We are handling an issue where an assert does not automatically switch from "fired" to resolve, which apparently is what is causing it not to fire again ever. This information is not intuitively present in the new UI, only in the classic. The time spent in discovery of this is absurd. Once found, it looks like there is no way to manually "resolve" an alert.

  8. Increase Azure Alert Rule Description lenght

Alert rule description in Azure Alerts is currently limited to 128 characters.
In OMS Alert description doesn’t seem to have a limit?
Soon OMS Alerts will be auto extended in to Azure Alerts and I have descriptions of alerts that are way longer than 128 characters.

They cant be short because the team that get the alert needs to understand what to do with it.
I cant explain it with less characters than a tweet.

  9. Metric values is not self-explanatory

    Metric values is not self-explanatory

Being new to the Azure metric , it is quite difficult to understand what does the success means ( or any other metrics displayed in the dropdown) and it is not even self-explanatory. (pic 1)

There should have been some more information such as “success - The number of successful requests made to a storage service or the specified API operation”.

There are lot of public documentation on monitoring and alerts. It is always suggested to start with these documents. Probably, it is quite difficult to include enough information into the portal to make everything…

  10. notification email not have the usefull message in activity log

We create an role assignments alert. We find that the notification email is not showing the target object which is being added or removed from Azure Role. But this information is available in Activity log.

Please also add the message in Activity log into notification email.

  11. Threshold Unit for Capacity metric

    Threshold Unit for Capacity metric

Scenario: For the “Capacity” Metric ,the unit is being displayed as “Bytes”, it is quite painful to calculate, if we have GB/TB of data, even if we miss single digit, it will cost us huge.
Why can’t we have units in term of “GB” or “TB” along with the bytes.

  12. Differentiate Azure Functions Apps and Azure App Service via Azure Monitor REST API

I am trying to monitor both App Service and Azure Functions via the Azure Monitor REST API. Both use the same resource type "Microsoft.Web/sites".
Different sets of metrics are returned depending on whether a resource is a Function App or a App Service. Is there a way to determine which metrics are being emitted by each service?
Is there any plan to give Function Apps a unique resource type identifier?
Or perhaps add a dimension to these metrics to differentiate which service they are being emitted from?

  13. Azure Policy to enforce enabling sending logs to Log Analytics

Give us the ability to automatically send logs for a given resource type to an OMS workspace. I understand there are ways to configure existing resources to send logs to OMS and we can configure this as part of ARM templates. However, many people would prefer if this could be applied as policy, much like tagging. The other ways rely on the users to configure things themselves when they deploy resources or rely on predefined ARM templates which is too constricting.

  14. Metric Monitoring for Upcoming Metric Pricing Changes

In June of 2018, the pricing model for the Metrics API will change from completely free, to charging after the first million queries. (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/monitor/) After consulting with support, there appears to be no way to get the current API "usage", so thus no way to truly know how much you will be charged. Running a distributed development shop, it is difficult for us to gauge how often our developers, support, and sales engineering are actually hitting the Metrics API used within our products. Can a metric to actually gauge how often the Metric API is queried be added?

  15. Send EMail to Subscription Security Contact in Azure Monitor action groups

would be nice to have the option to send an email to the Subscription Security Contact in an action group as a default selection instead of having to type the email adress again.

  16. Allow to filter for Task in EtwProvider

Currently the EtwProvider allows to filter

    • by log level

    • by keyword (via the scheduledTransferKeywordFilter bitmask

We want to get Service Fabric health information only (EventId = 54306), however this comes with loads of other events (EventId = 17523) which we are not interested in at all.

Both are logged with keyword "Default;CustomerInfo" and with log level "Information", so we can't filter by keyword.

They differ in the TaskName ("HM" vs "CRM"), however we can't filter for task name in the EtwProvider.

It would be perfect if we could filter them to get only the health metrics but not the other…

  18. Monitoring would not work for me in a Single Node

I posted in the MSDN forum and finally solved it. Please read the forum notes for full details and fixes too. Let me highlight the bug. When you click on Diagnostics and then Overview you get a screen for configuring the counters. There it gives option None-Basic-Custom. So it turns out what ever you see set there is actually not set that display is wrong. So when you start the monitor it will say not data found because not counter has been set. So you have to actually edit and add it.

  20. Unable to classify the Activity log alerts "level" parameter

As per the current setup one of the parameter "level" in the Activity log alerts are working only by "ALL" option . Since Microsoft have some predefined alert classification, Even though there is a drop down option available (with the following values "Critical,Warning,Information ,,etc").
So please consider to enable a customized privilege to azure users for enabling the "level" parameter value.
This would help the users to differentiate the severity of alerts and can be configure a mail box for the same.
