If you haven’t tried the portal in a while please give it a try.

Performance has been a key area of feedback and one where we have been focusing much of our efforts. We’ve been improving performance across all areas, specifically focusing on portal startup, performance of resource blades, and core portal experiences (like All resources). Measurements were done based on real usage (using telemetry) across all users and geographies. We tracked median and 95 percentile for each focus area.

As a result, you will enjoy of a faster experience with the portal. A few numbers:

    • We improved portal startup +50%
    • On average we improved resource blade (Web App, VM, and SQL) load +300%

Feel free to open new ideas for specific areas where we can continue to improve performance.

  2. The UI is a mess to navigate

I and my customers agree that the Preview Portal UI is a complete disaster. It's got a mixture of Metro-itis and Symantec-ology going on, that only Julie Larsson-Green could approve of. Constant popups, movement, hiding of features behind unlabelled icons, and inconsistent design (save versus OK) makes this portal a disaster. The old portal is MUCH easier to use, discover functionality in, and manage Azure with. The Preview portal is an anti-marketing and anti-sales campaign that must be Amazon's best friend in the cloud war. Please go back to the starting board.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. You’ve seen a lot of improvements to navigation over the past year, like favorites and shrinking the list of resources after opening the resource blade, but we’re not done by any means. We have even more in the works — all based on your feedback, so thank you for that. Since this post is so general and you’ll continue to see improvements over time, we’re closing this for now, but please do keep the feedback coming! We’d love to hear your specific, actionable feedback around navigation.

  3. Choose default directory

If you have several azture accounts with admin rights assigned to you, it would be great if you could set a Default account and subscription that is set when logging in.

  4. Add ability to filter on subscription in Preview Portal

One of the features I'm missing from the old portal in the preview portal is the ability to filter the UI by subscription. I have my own subscription that I use for setting up demos etc and it works great in the old portal because I don't reveal anything else from other subscriptions. I need this ability in the preview portal.

Filtering just by directory isn't sufficient because I might have multiple subscriptions linked to a single directory.

Subscription filtering is now available in the list of resources available from Browse.

When you browse to All Resources or a specific resource type, you can use the text filter to find resources by name or the subscription dropdown to focus on the subscriptions you need most.

Let us know what you think!

  6. Prevent accidental deletion in the portal by "Locking"

Have the ability to "LOCK" key machines to prevent accidental delete in the UX. Example - I "NEVER" want to be able to say say "Delete PROD SQL and all attached disks" - I just don't ever want to do it. But right now in the portal in 2 short clicks I can blow it all away. There should be a way to lock a machine / cloud service and require a bunch of steps to delete it.

  7. Ability to export a Resource Group as a template

When doing work which needs to be repeating, i.e. deploying a large set of servers, configuring a complex set of dependencies, it would be very helpful to have the ability to save the resource group as a template, which could then potentially be used in the Azure Resource Manager within Visual Studio to be further refined for argument usage. The use case for this would be dev/test environments, where we need the ability to fully tare down and re-create the environment. This feature would build on top of the current ability to execute Save-AzureResourceGroupGalleryTemplate.

  8. Provide role based access to the Azure Management Portal

Currently, there exist only 3 account types. Service Admin, Co-Admin and Billing Admin. They all have direct access to all hosted environments within the subscription ID through the Azure Management Portal single point of entry. This is a security issue to us as we require more granular role based access to each Azure resource via the admin portal.

  9. Too many clicks

The old manage portal certainly gives you faster and more tuned access to data in less clicks. The new "portal.azure.com portal in preview is very click intensive. It may work great on a touch device where you just keep popping up new windows to scroll to to see more data, but the old portal provides more data faster with less clicks and allows just as much organization. Just in a tabbed like view instead of a click for pop up style as in the new version.

Before all related data is very close together in a tab, now it's kinda…

With the latest navigation improvements, we’ve dropped the click count in a few places and most actions can be completed in the same number of clicks as the old portal. We still have a lot of plans to improve navigation, but we’ll give you these votes back for now. If there are specific areas you’d like to see us focus on, let us know!

  12. Make the desktop experience richer, more robust

We develop complex products with complex tools and we are not going to do this from a small screen. Designing a product for a small screen when it will rarely if ever be used from one is a real disservice in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback! We absolutely know that nailing a great desktop experience is critical. We’ll keep improving the experience. Let us know if you have any specific areas you think we can focus on. In the meantime, we’ll close this to give you your votes back. Keep the feedback coming!

  13. Bring back All Items view (Browse > Everything >> Should actually list everything like in 'ALL ITEMS' view in old portal )

Bring back All Items view (Browse > Everything >> Should actually list everything like in 'ALL ITEMS' view in old portal )

Browse > Everything blade doesn't list all items. i still end up clicking individual items to see the list.

The "ALL Items" view in current/ old portal allows to glance through all resources and take actions if any from there. Also that view helps me to do global search as well.

  14. Auditing of Co administrator addition to Subscriptions

Today there is no way to understand who was added to a subscription and who added them basically the audit trail is missing , it is a support call when this should be self service information . This is question being asked over and over again by audits like FISMA, ISO etc.

  15. Allow the Creation of Different Customized Dashboards and Provide Context Switching Between Them

The new azure preview portal has some nice dash customization options. However, a current pain point is that the new dash isn’t optimized for people who wear multiple hats and manage multiple different services hosted in azure under a single account.

Different services could call for surfacing different types of metrics. One service could be cost sensitive and warrant surfacing burn and consumption rate. Another could be a critical service and warrant surfacing availability and reliability metrics. Yet another service could be under active development and warrant surfacing deployments and issue tracking.

Right now, the current preview portal requires either…

  16. Allow us to tag and filter Azure services

Subscriptions are great if you need to keep your billing for services separated, but if you are running multiple product lines inside the same subscription there is no easy way to differentiate services between products. Especially if you need to share some services across subscription which causes everything to get mucked up.

I suggest you allow us to arbitrarily tag each service (multiple tags) and then filter (within the subscription) to view services by tag. That way we can pivot the filtering to fit disparate business models. From an administration side this would help me find what I want to…

  18. Don't require right-click to perform tasks (especially for touch)

There should be some way to perform the commands in the right-click menu without actually needing to right-click (for example, a little arrow or button next to the object that you can tap on).

This is especially important for touch devices, where right-click isn't consistent.

  19. Restrict access to Portal by IP or RSA SecurID

Azure is not more secure than you Live ID email and password.

Using Azure for serious confidential data requires a lot of dicipline, and it's hard to prove that you enforces this. Eg. you can configure Live ID to require change of password.

I would love to restrict access to the Portal by IP adress, or require a challenge like a RSA SecurID.

This is actually possible today :-)

Check out this article on how to enable IP filtering with multi-factor auth:

Enhancing Azure MFA with Contextual IP Address Whitelisting

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/ad/archive/2014/04/25/enhancing-azure-mfa-with-contextual-ip-address-whitelisting.aspx

“Whitelisting a range of IP addresses: Both managed and federated customers have the ability to whitelist a range of IP addresses for MFA in the admin portal.”
