SQL Data Sync

Azure SQL Data Sync (Preview) is a service that enables you to synchronize the data you select across multiple SQL Server and SQL Database instances. To synchronize your data you create sync groups which define the databases, tables and columns to synchronize as well as the synchronization schedule. Each sync group must have at least one SQL Database instance which serves as the sync group hub in a hub-and-spoke topology.

If you have any feedback on Azure SQL Data Sync service, we’d love to hear it.

  1. Provide some sort of warning in the Azure Portal regarding the schema modification that occurs during SQL Data Sync

I would like more transparency in to what occurs during the SQL Data Sync when creating it in the Azure portal.

I created a Sync group, tried running it, the sync failed, and left the Hub database throwing SQL errors in my web app. Thus, there should be some sort of notification that the Hub database is modified when running the Sync.

  2. Support changes to composite keys

Due to a legacy database and codebase issue I've encountered a situation where an update made to a key comprising a composite key on a table causes issues with the Sync process.

    A table has
    key 1: A
    key 2: B

If an update is made to this record to change key 2 to instead have a value of C, Data sync doesn't like this.

Data sync presently only takes the insert values in the trigger but doesn't consider the potential for a corresponding delete value where the key may be different. In this case it could instead look at…

  3. Support sync to occassionally disconnected SqlServer express subscribers

Support sync to occassionally disconnected SqlServer express, with >30 (eg 150) subscribers, or 30 dynamic but concurrent subscribers

  4. Sync table between Row-stored and Column-stored

I want to use the Row-stored table for OLTP,
and to use the Column-stored table for Analyze using Power BI.

So, I hope to sync table between Row-stored and Column-stored.
There are the Row-stored table on Azure SQL Database standard,
and There are the Column-stored table on SQL Server Express.

  5. Prevent resetting REGION after selecting subscription when creating a new Sync Group

    In Japanese language portal,
when I try to create a new Sync Group,
I enter NAME, select REGION 'east asia' and then select one subscription from our multiple subscriptions.

    However after selecting one subscription,
it causes the region reset to US north.

I hope the region remains my selection.

  6. Change the subscriptions of DataSync

Presently there is option to change the subscription of azure SQL server but there is no such option to change\move the DataSync to other subscription.

  7. Allow backup of databases that contain sync groups

Currently the only way to backup a database that contains sync groups is to either deprovision the sync groups, or make a copy of the database, deprovision the sync groups in the copy, and backup the copy. This adds unnecessary time and inconvenience to backup process for any database that contains sync groups.

  8. Allow date / datetime as part of the primary key

I have a few tables that use date and datetime as part of the primary key, and would like to be able to synchronise these tables which is currently unsupported.
