SQL Database

  1. Native support for creating a GeoJSON string from a geospatial type

Native support for creating a GeoJSON string from a geospatial type. We currently do this by “ToStringing” the geography instance then doing several string REPLACEs to turn it in to GeoJSON. A fast, native function would be awesome.

  2. Ability to create an SQL Server by itself (as was possible in the non-preview portal)

In the release portal I could easily create a new SQL Server by itself (no need to create a database in it immediately).

In the preview portal I can only seem to add a new SQL server as part of creating a database.

I would find it useful if I could create an SQL server independently in the preview portal.

    Thank you.

  5. View Designer Bug

    MSSM connected to Azure SQL-DB.
Unable to add extra tables in View designer.

Using context-menu: Views > New View
Select one or more tables - press [Close]
Right-click and notice that 'Add Table' is disabled.
It is not possible to add ekstra tables to the View Designer!

  6. Get this overengineered **** to work.

This **** just doesn't work. I've been trying to publish my SQL Server database to Azure for two days.

Now I'll have to spend 30 bucks a month on Indians who hopefully know the right sequence of dials to turn and buttons to press.

Maybe that's what Microsoft wants to begin with.

  7. Disable Server Admin (after creation)

Server Admin Login and Password is mandatory during the creation of Azure SQL. Would like it to be possible to delete after creation of server and AAD SQL Admin.

•There are enough companies who have to rule (inherited from the on-prem) that accounts must be controlled by a centralized Identity Store, such as AAD.
•Password rotation must be done, it is a lot easier when you have a centralized identity Store instead that you have to do it for a lot of Azure SQL Servers.

  8. Option to disable transaction logging in Azure SQL Database

We are using Azure SQL Database for processing large amount of data and building data warehouse. By default Azure SQL database logs every write operation (DML) which impacts the data processing time. It would be great if there is option (with disclaimer) to disable the transaction logging to use Azure SQL Database for large scale analytical applications.

  10. Azure Active Directory admin and user-defined database roles

We've created two seperate Azure AD groups, a group called Admins and a group called Readers.

The Azure AD group "Admins" is configured as Azure AD Admin on the SQL database making every member of this group a db_owner.

The second group "Readers" has been created as a contained DB user with the following statements.

    CREATE USER [Readers] FROM EXTERNAL PROVIDER;
ALTER ROLE dbdatareader ADD MEMBER [Readers]
    ALTER ROLE custom
    datareader ADD MEMBER [Readers]

The second role custom_datareader is used for row-level security.
However we've noticed that the role isn't applied if a member is both in the "Admins"…

  11. Audit log queue details

My understanding is that there are buffers in place that limit the number of concurrent writes to audit logs, however that information is not public. Can you share the details of the queue buffer limits or, even better, make this a feature that customers can control on their own?
    Thanks.

  13. How to use Sharding with EF Core

I'm trying to convert .NET Framework4 + EF6 code to .NET Core3 + EF Core using Sharding. But I can't find any examples.
This EF6 example https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-database/sql-database-elastic-scale-use-entity-framework-applications-visual-studio is not working in EF Core.
Looking at its comments a year ago was already asked for a EF Core example. So far I haven't able to find an example.
This is also asked at https://stackoverflow.com/questions/61632457/how-to-use-database-sharding-with-ef-core-and-c

  14. Size restrictions - planned to grow past 8TB?

We have a 6TB database and see the current 8TB limit as the main reason we cannot use it. Are there plans to support larger database size, and if so, can you share at least a guess on the time frame this could be implemented? Are there technical hurdles that would prevent it?

  15. Provide SQL Management in an Embedded version (lite) for small clients. This would be really cool.

Not all clients are huge and not all of them have hired IT skilled staff. So offering the possibility for developers to embed the Sql Designer into webpages would be really cool. This might not be feasible or even good practice for large databases but small ones, could be a great idea. It might exist already ... If it doesn't ... Please push it to the decision makers. I would even offer to do it for you guys :D

  16. Bug report - Discrepancies typed as 'discrepencies '

    Team,

Under "Data Security" , while showing vulnerability assessment overview

VA2061 - Auditing should be enabled at the server level

Below description has spelling wrong for "Discrepancies "

"Azure SQL Database Auditing tracks database events and writes them to an audit log in your Azure storage account. Auditing helps you understand database activity and gain insight into discrepencies and anomalies that could indicate business concerns or suspected security violations, as well as helps you meet regulatory compliance.
For more information see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-database/sql-database-auditing "

  19. Acquire TabStudio plugin and integrate into SSMS

www.tabsstudio.com plug-in allows for editor tabs to be displayed vertically on multiple rows, rather than just the default behavior of right-left navigation on a single row when too many opened documents exceed the available width. BTW, that product works for Visual Studio with the same functionality. Add the new configuration settings to Tools | Options |Environment | Tabs and Windows setting page.

  20. Ability to reduce the number of decimal places lat/longs are written to WKT or GeoJSON with

Ability to reduce the number of decimal places lat/longs are written to WKT or GeoJSON with. We have reduced our Json payload by well over 50% by reducing the lat long to 8 decimal places. This is still gives us about 1cm accuracy. However we have had to use C# code using sqlserver.types running outside Sql to perform this task. It would make like much easier if we could do this natively – the only way I can see to do this is SQL is through string manipulation.
