SQL Database

  1. Enable elastics jobs to use managed service identity

SQL Server now supports MSI and yet Elastic Jobs still relies on SQL user credentials. It would be much better to be able to give a job an AD identity that can be managed and can be given rights on certain servers and databases.

  2. Azure SQL Managed Instance DNS alias

Just like DNS alias is supported for Azure SQL database https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-database/dns-alias-overview,
we need same functionality supported for Azure SQL managed instance, abstraction layer to redirect traffic during upgrades, massive data maintenance etc.

  5. Would like to deny schema access to sql azure database owner (not db_owner role)

Once a sql azure database is created by a login, we would like to be able to stop this login from seeing data in the schemas. Row security can be used to hide the data but a user logged in with this login can turn the row security off and then get access to the data.

Please improve the time zone of Azure SQL Database so that users can change it.

When migrating to Azure SQL Database, it takes a lot of time to change all the programs of the application.

  7. Enable Query Data Store in Secondary Geo Replicated Databases

We use Geo Replicated Secondaries to distribute query load among the secondaries. Right now, QDS is only available for the Primary. It would be really nice if we could use all the power of QDS on the secondaries to diagnose issues.

  9. Provide TAGs using Restore-AzSqlDatabase from LTR backup

We need to setup the tags value at the same time we restore a database from a LTR backup because we have a policy that force to have a tag (DIC=value).

It's possible to setup tags value with point in time restore via (az sql db restore) but it not possible to do that when we restore from a LTR backup.

  10. parallelism

The cost threshold for parallelism of azure sql databases should be a database setting thats configurable. At the moment it's an instance setting with it's default value set to 5. Which is just to low.

  11. Elastic Database jobs support for V12 dacpac

The current elastic jobs only support V11 dacpac deployments which do succeed in deploying to all of the shards in an elastic pool. The V12 features which we are using (mainly around JSON functions) prevent us from being able to create a V11 dacpac. The only current workaround is to create the tsql scripts via schema compare and modify them to be idempotent to be executed by the elastic job. This is becoming a large task to keep up with our database developers.

  12. Add Azure SQL Database Memory Usage Metric In the Portal

Azure SQL Database has ton of metrics available for monitoring in the portal. It would be complete if Microsoft could create a metric for monitoring Memory also.

  13. Azure Sql Import Bacpac slow

We are testing a production database migration to Azure SQL. The database is 50GB and even on the S3 tier we are going on 30 hours still and the import isn't complete (pegged at 100% DTU). At this point I couldn't even tell you when this will finish. I understand I could have chosen the highest premium tier to import this and it might have been quicker, however I only want to test this database and right now I've lost 3-4 days on this (importing at S0, S1 tiers). My suggestion is to allow an option when going through the…

  14. Bring back T-SQL debugger (and make it work with MI)

The T-SQL debugger, while not perfect, was a very useful tool for me. We've recently migrated a large database with some complex SPs from MySQL to an Azure Managed Instance, and while the debugger did not work with the MI, it did work with our on-prem dev server. Using the debugger has made it so much easier to track down where something has gone awry. I was very disappointed to learn that it's being removed completely in SSMS 18.

  15. Distributed / cross-database queries within an elastic pool

We're familiar with elastic queries, but there's a class of cross-database query scenarios that they don't address.

What we really need is the ability to perform a query across multiple databases. In SQL Server on-premises, this is done with a three- or four-part notation to reference the external database. That option doesn't exist in Azure and is required for a number of scenarios.

For example, Dynamics GP uses multiple databases, so it simply can't run on Azure SQL. We have additional third-party systems that have the same requirement. So we literally have no way to move to Azure as a…

  16. Allow changing Azure SQL DB administrator username

For some bizarre reason there's no feature to change the Azure SQL DB administrator username, only the password. An ex-employee used his real name as the administrator username and we need to change it.

  17. Add support for OLE DB connections to Azure SQL DB that support Azure Active Directory Authentication

When working with a client recently they wanted to put data into Azure SQL DB using SSIS and the OLE DB destination component. They were unable to do this because they have a hard requirement to use Windows Authentication. Azure SQL DB supports Azure Active Directory Authentication now, however the OLE DB component does not support this.

Please could support for this be added.

  18. Allow firewall rules on Azure SQL DB to be removed via ARM templates

Currently it seems that because the firewall rules for an Azure SQL DB are just proxy resources in an ARM template that you can not remove them via this mechanism. If you remove them from the ARM template, they are not removed from the Azure SQL DB resource. This means that it is not possible to properly source control the configuration as the source controlled configuration can differ from reality. I think it is vital to allow people to properly manage the Azure SQL DB as code that you work allow the rules to be removed via the ARM template.

  19. Support Event Grid for triggers and/or service broker external activator

I know Azure Event Grid has been released as preview. SQL Server has features like triggers and service broker that are not currently supported by Azure SQL.

Do you happen to support Azure Event Grid on Azure SQL so that we can implement triggers and/or service broker external activator?

  20. Enable to control the timing of LTR backup

Our customers would like to configure the timing of LTR backups or manually create a LTR backup to restore the several databases from the exact same time.
