Make SQL Azure a database option for SharePoint farms running in Azure IaaS
We have our SharePoint 2013 on Azure IaaS and we would like to use Azure SQL for our databases instead of running SQL Server VMs.
We'd also like to use SQL Azure for our Access Services databases. Office 365 does this already.

Thanks for your feedback. I’ll have something more to share shortly.

Any updates on this? Is it now supported to use Azure SQL with SP 2013 running on IaaS?

Thanks. I think there is huge value in this. You get your own SharePoint farm with out having to manage HA or backups. That eliminates the need for an experienced senior DBA. It also saves a ton of administration work. Managing SQL Server has been our biggest headache on IaaS and putting the databases in Azure SQL DB would solve that problem. It will also allow Azure to offer something that you cannot get on premise.
Concerns about database and disc performance are big blockers to putting Azure on IaaS. The story has improved some with premium storage and new classes of VMs. If Azure SQL DB eliminates that concern, more people will move their farms to Azure.
