SQL Database

  1. Support full-text indexing

Our application is heavily dependent on it. So this is a blocker right now.

  2. Allow SQL Database to join Virtual Network (VPN)

I have Cloud Service with web/worker roles connected to SQL Database (web edition).

I also have Virtual Network with point-to-site client (P2S) connection, but I cannot connect to my SQL Database (web edition) via VPN (eg using SSDM). Instead I have to use internet connection.

IP address assigned by my ISP has short lifetime and is reset daily. This means that almost every time I want to perform Admin tasks, I have to log onto Windows Azure portal to change my IP address in the SQL database firewall (defining a range of addresses is not an option).

    VPN would mean…

  3. Provide backup/restore for SQL Database

Not having a simple backup/restore for SQL Database is a key limiter. Import/export and create DB as copy of aren't sufficient for many application scenarios.

Thanks for everyone’s patience here. Yesterday we announce new SQL Database service tiers, full details are http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowsazure/archive/2014/04/24/azure-sql-database-introduces-new-service-tiers.aspx All of these new service tiers feature automated backups and user controlled restores. Full details of the backup/restore is at this MSDN article. Please try these out and provide us feedback.

    Thanks the SQL Database team.

  4. Cross database reference

The ability to query (read-only) data from a difference database or linked server. This will allow to reference (join) some tables from the source database and build views that uses two or more SQL Azure databases.

  5. Enable Transparent Data Encryption

Enabling TDE would go a long way to help placate business sponsors concerned about their data being housed in Microsoft's datacenters. Even though the cloud is arguably more secure than doing it yourself, turning on TDE would provide a warm fuzzy feeling to those not comfortable with the concept.

  6. Enable SQL Service Broker in SQL Azure

Service Broker should be available in Windows Azure.

  7. Make SQL-Azure 100% T-SQL compatible

I script I maintain/exported from an on-premise site should just run on the cloud.

It doesn't matter if it implements some tokens as a No-OP or with warnings or notes. But it should compile unaltered and run on Azure.

In a DB as a service model, that Azure SQL database is, full t-SQL compatibility isn’t something that we can promise or deliver on in the short/medium term. While we are working on improvements, 100% is a very high goal.

We do have two great solutions for SQL in Windows Azure. SQL Server in a Windows Azure VM is the best choice for highest T-SQL compatibility. Azure SQL Database is the best choice when writing new apps, or when existing apps can be modified to run with the subset of T-SQL that Azure SQL Database supports.

If you have other feedback, guyhay@microsoft.com would be great

In a DB-as-a-service model such as Azure SQL Database, DMVs are the mechanism today to monitor what’s going on under the covers. SQL Profile is already deprecated in SQL Server, and that’s part of the reason that it doesn’t make sense to bring to SQL DB.

We are adding DMVs as we expose more of the multi-tenant system functions.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/ff394114.aspx has more details on DMVs available today.

We are looking at exposing XEvents in way that completely cover the need for what profiler is used for in SQL Server.

We are looking at additional possibilities in the future to expose a tracing mechanism in the future.

  10. MySQL and PostgreSQL as DAAS from MS (like an Azure SQL database)

MySQL and/or PostgresSQL as a DAAS from Microsoft or atleast please buy ClearDB.

I work for a University and we really need mysql/postgresql to exist as an offering from MS and not from a provider as we cannot always use the non MS offerings for Mysql for your systems . Our databases are primarly mysql/postgresql and it's not a realistic scenario to convert/migrate to Azure SQL. I Think alot of universities need this as a native offering in azure. The ClearDB solution is something that we can use but not for everything, for this kind of solution we really need…

  11. Make SQL Column Store Feature Available for Standard Tiers

Please don't make column store indexes premium only feature. We can use column store in SQL Standard Edition so why here should be different? Premium features should be performance gains to existing features, not banning them altogether for those of us who can't afford the premium prices.

  12. Add DTC support for SQL Azure

I want to utilise LINQ and TransactionScope in my web roles and DTC support in SQL Azure would solve this problem

  14. Full Management Studio Support

Currently you can only run queries against SQL Azure databases. It would be good to get the rest of management studio working (object explorer etc.)

Thanks for your feedback. • We now have Always Encrypted (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/updates/public-preview-always-encrypted-for-azure-sql-database/) (transparent, client-side encryption of columns) and Cell-Level Encryption (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlsecurity/archive/2015/05/12/recommendations-for-using-cell-level-encryption-in-azure-sql-database.aspx )(crypto functions integrated with engine’s key hierarchy) in preview on SQL DB.

  16. Please reconsider the new DB pricing tiers

Please reconsider the new DB pricing tiers. We have been using a 10 GB Business DB for almost 4 years and have been very happy with its performance. Last week we moved to the new Tiers since Web/Business will be deprecated in the future. We tried S1, S2 etc eventually we had to move to P2 to get the same level of performance.

That was over a 3X price increase for something we've been using for almost 4 years.

    One more update here.

A couple of folks reach out after my last post, and I’d encourage everyone else that’s concerned or adding comments to do the same here.

For this update I did want to highlight a couple of 3rd part comments on Elastic Database Pools and their experience upgrading from Web/Business

    http://www.software-architects.com/devblog/2016/01/31/Hello-Database-Pools

    http://stackify.com/sql-azure-elastic-pool-product-review/

It would be good to understand your scenario in more details. While we understand that a small subset of customers may be asked to pay more for their resource consumption, this isn’t the common use case.

For those of you who are facing large increases in your monthly bill as a result of moving from Web/Business (where we charge on DB size) to Basic/Standard/Premium single or elastic DBs I am always willing to listen to the specifics.

We do think the new service tiers, with their new features and predictable performance, offer great price performance…

  17. Add support for ASP.NET sessions in SQL Azure

Please add support for ASP.NET sessions in SQL Azure. Although the membership and roles providers currently work with SQL Azure, the session provider does not. If we have more than 1 instance of our web roles we are forced to use the custom ASP.NET session provider that uses Azure Storage which is very slow and buggy. I have a whole thread on this in the forums: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsazure/thread/b87cadf1-2918-43d3-972f-0fb32f13d5ca

  18. Active Directory Integration

As if now SQL Azure supports only SQL Authentication.Would it be possible to create something like a virtual Active Directory in Windows Azure, sync the Azure Active Directory with my domain Active Directory and then use windows authentication to connect to SQL Azure.Would Azure team work on creating this functionality.

  19. Bring SQL 2014's In-Memory OLTP to SQL Azure

This is a great new feature, and it will be very useful in scenarios such as session state management, low latency, read and write scale, reduced locks, etc.
