SQL Database

  1. R for Azure SQL DB

It would be great if SQL Server R Services feature of SQL Server 2016 comes to Azure SQL DB as well. I see a great potential for this integration and would enable advanced analytics scenarios on PaaS seamlessly

  2. Track SQL DB restore progress

Tracking in detail the restore of a SQL DB is mandatory in order to provide a transparent customer support. At this moment, one can only see if a restore is running (1%) or finished, but the restore progress in percentages cannot be seen. The only reply I can give at this moment to my customers about when the database restore will be finished, is somewhere within 24h.

  3. Allow SQL databases to be shutdown

Now that we can shutdown SQL Data Warehouses I'd like to be able to shutdown a SQL database. Even if there are multiple SQL databases on a server, I'd like to shutdown the databases individually since that's what I'm charged for. Just like with VMs I would expect to only be charged for the storage when the database is shutdown.
As a bonus, shutting down the entire SQL Server would be great too, but I really only care about shutting down a database.

  4. Allow Recovery Model to be changed to SIMPLE in Azure SQL Database

According to this article (https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/azuresqldbsupport/2018/12/28/lesson-learned-50-adding-pk-led-to-transaction-log-full-error/) the recovery model of a Azure SQL Database cannot be altered from the default option FULL. In a very data intensive setup, this blows up the transaction log -> the LOG IO percentage in portal is at 100% all the time. Allowing the SIMPLE recovery model should improved the performance significantly.

  5. View & Edit SQL Server database data

In the old portal it was possible to view and edit the data of an SQL Server database.
This feature was very compelling to me, and I'd like to see the implementation of it, or at least a temporary reference to it meanwhile.
Otherwise I have to go back and use the old portal.

Thanks for the feedback. We’re working on a lot of great stuff and will continue to expand the functionality in the preview portal to match the full portal over time. You’ll see things like this become available over time.

  6. Support the dbmail.

The feature dbmail in SQL 2005 makes email sending much easier, should keep it in SQL Azure.

  8. Increase the max database size

Our clients frequently have multi-terabyte databases, which instantly removes SQL DB as an option. Having to scale to P11 and pay $7K/mo for only 1TB seems outrageous. Storage it cheap, even in high IOPS scenarios. We would use SQL DB more often if storage were increased significantly.

  9. Enable GZip/Deflate Compression of SQL Azure OData Response

OData's AtomPub protocol is very verbose. My calculations indicate that AtomPub multiplies Data Transfer Out bytes by a factor of 8.75. (See Querying OData.org’s SQL Azure Northwind Sample Data Service: http://oakleafblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/odataorgs-sql-azure-northwind-sample.html).

Despite the Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate header, SQL Azure OData responses aren''t compressed. I agree with this comment by Scott Hanselman - failure to compress OData responses is LAME.

  10. Make SQL Azure a database option for SharePoint farms running in Azure IaaS

We have our SharePoint 2013 on Azure IaaS and we would like to use Azure SQL for our databases instead of running SQL Server VMs.

We'd also like to use SQL Azure for our Access Services databases. Office 365 does this already.

  12. Alphanumeric ORDER BY

Please add support of alpha numeric ORDER BY of text values. A good sample you will find here: http://www.davekoelle.com/alphanum.html
Without this feature is impossible to made a paging (skip, take) of for example file names.

  13. Add Java API for Azure SQL Database Elastic Scale

For Java shops, we need an API for Azure SQL Database Elastic Scale. We already have too much code and want to minimize the amount of refactoring to move up to Azure SQL Database. We're very interested in Elastic Scale. Without a Java API, this a non-starter for us.

  14. Implement Optimize for Ad Hoc Workloads Option for Azure Database

Please consider implementing a feature to allow turning on the optimize for ad hoc workloads option on a per-database basis for Azure databases. Right now this option is only available in on-premises SQL Server on a server-wide basis, where it's a great help for managing plan cache memory when dealing with 3rd party applications where we have no control over the SQL that gets thrown at the database. It would be great to be able to enable this option on a per-database basis in Azure. If you decide to implement this feature, then it would seem logical that turning the…

  15. Support direct upload of bacpac to new or existing database

Please allow us to support a direct upload of a bacpac file both when making a new database or on top of an existing database. Unless there's something I'm missing, to restore on top of an existing database I have to
    1) move the bacpac into storage
    2) make a new database from storage
    3) rename/delete the old
    4) rename the new

    This process is VERY annoying.

  16. Read-scale and cross-region database replication

I am a Principal Program Manager in Azure SQL Database. I want to provide better support for the following scenario.

I have a web application that is currently deployed in Europe. We expect the business to grow so we will need to expand to other regions. I am using SQL Azure for my DB. The data is relatively small (<10GB) so I don’t want to deal with data partitioning. Also having a single data image will help me with the analytics. I would like to replicate the data to all regions and setup smart routing so that the web front…

  17. Defect: Server name is already used

    Defect:

I created a new server and new database in Azure SQL. I had to delete that server and now I am trying to create server with same name. But it says that server name is already used. I could also reproduce same scenario.

  18. Allow SQL Database to be a subscriber in transactional push sql replication

Now it is virtually impossible to keep an on-premise database and an Sql Database in sync. E.g. With Microsoft Sync Framework, which is batch based and not transactional, tables can be out of sync when syncing.

Thanks for your feedback here. We are always thinking about how we can improve the integration between SQL Server and Azure SQL Database. There are a number of investments that we are working on.

We’d love to learn more about your specific scenario. Can you please email me at guyhay at Microsoft.com.
    Thanks Guy

  19. Allow the user to disable int/bigint identity 1000/10000 increase

    Reference: https://www.jitbit.com/alexblog/239-sql-server-bug-ms-calls-a-feature/

Currently, the next identity value jumps automatically whenever the SQL server instance restarts. Most of us don't want that jump to happen because it'll leave thousands of unused ID numbers behind. You can only fix this problem by specifying the -T272 startup parameter for SQL Server which is not available to us Azure SQL users.

Please let us disable this "feature" easily.

  20. Active Geo replication to different subscription

Customers are looking for this type of feature to replicate data from Prod in UAT/Test. Also to make the database available for third party to separate the costing. Currently custom coding or replication tools are needed, but would be great if the secondary replica can be in another subscription
