SQL Database

  1. Enable In-Memory OLTP for SQL Azure Standard tier

Upgrade Azure SQL Database in Standard tier from 12.0.2000.8 to 14.0.1000.169 and enable memory-optimized tables and natively compiled stored procedures.

  2. Force user to read replica Azure SQL Database where Read Scale-Out has been Enabled and user only has readonly access,

Is there any way to force a user to read from a read only replica where that user has only been granted readonly access to a database? It seems that we're relying on any external application to be a good citizen and provide the ApplicationIntent in the connection string.

  3. Allow firewall rules on Azure SQL DB to be removed via ARM templates

Currently it seems that because the firewall rules for an Azure SQL DB are just proxy resources in an ARM template that you can not remove them via this mechanism. If you remove them from the ARM template, they are not removed from the Azure SQL DB resource. This means that it is not possible to properly source control the configuration as the source controlled configuration can differ from reality. I think it is vital to allow people to properly manage the Azure SQL DB as code that you work allow the rules to be removed via the ARM template.

  4. Create Service Tags for Azure SQL Database Firewall Rules

I'd like to disable allow access to azure services on Azure SQL database but then easily allow Azure Automation runbooks to access the database. Currently we would have to find and manage the list of IP addresses that Azure Automation uses.

  6. Support update of backup retention days via the azure cli

The Azure CLI for SQL MI instances does not support update of the backup retention time. The documentation does not seem to refer to such an option, leaving only powershell and the REST APIs as options.

  7. Add ability in Azure SQL DB to have use minimal logging

Would like the ability in Azure SQL DB to use minimal logging just an an om premise SQL Server would do. For example, doing an insert into an empty table with only a clustered index and specifying WITH (TABLOCK) should do minimal logging.

  8. Round-robin read replicas and provide performance metrics of replicas in portal

There is more than one read-replica and it would be a huge performance benefit to be able to round-robin the connection to them. Would also be great to get visibility into the replicas via the Azure portal.

  9. Database Swap

    Hey team,

It would be a very nice feature to be able to swap a staging database to production without renaming or downtiming.

    Cheers!

  10. Support Event Grid for triggers and/or service broker external activator

I know Azure Event Grid has been released as preview. SQL Server has features like triggers and service broker that are not currently supported by Azure SQL.

Do you happen to support Azure Event Grid on Azure SQL so that we can implement triggers and/or service broker external activator?

  11. Add support for OLE DB connections to Azure SQL DB that support Azure Active Directory Authentication

When working with a client recently they wanted to put data into Azure SQL DB using SSIS and the OLE DB destination component. They were unable to do this because they have a hard requirement to use Windows Authentication. Azure SQL DB supports Azure Active Directory Authentication now, however the OLE DB component does not support this.

Please could support for this be added.

  12. Thesaurus support in SQL Azure

SQL Azure do support Full Text Search but thesaurus is not included. I know few partners requesting for this feature because for their ecommerce portal they are using SQL Azure and User Search is an integral part in any ecommerce portal. They are finding it hard to design an appropriate search functionality without out of the box thesaurus support.

Incase SQL Azure team can take-up this feature that would be great.

    Regards,
    Zainu

  13. Enable to control the timing of LTR backup

Our customers would like to configure the timing of LTR backups or manually create a LTR backup to restore the several databases from the exact same time.

  14. Advance Notification of Azure SQL maintenance

Customers can receive advance notification for Scheduled Maintenance to Azure SQL Database.
Currently the notification is sent when update for Azure SQL is applied.
But the notification is NOT sent when reconfiguration is performed manually due to any maintenance purpose.

During reconfiguration happens, many batch jobs cannot connect to database and end abnormally.
Those batch jobs are very important for their business.
The customer request to send notification before all maintenance which cause reconfiguration.

  15. Support managed Identity with BULK INSERT

As per below document, we can't use Managed Identity to access BLOB storage.
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-sql/database/doc-changes-updates-release-notes?tabs=single-database#bulk-insert-and-backuprestore-statements-cannot-use-managed-identity-to-access-azure-storage

This works with public endpoint of Blob storage, however if we turn on firewall or network limitation of storage account for security reason, it doesn't work.

This is a blocker of our customer's Azure usage, so please improve this.

  17. Add the feature to turn off/on Azure Database for MySQL server

We need to have the same "Server name" after turning on the Azure Database again, would be nice if some cost would be lower as we just use Storage in a stopped state.
Cloud is all about "Pay as you go"!

  18. Enable GZip/Deflate Compression of SQL Azure OData Response

OData's AtomPub protocol is very verbose. My calculations indicate that AtomPub multiplies Data Transfer Out bytes by a factor of 8.75. (See Querying OData.org’s SQL Azure Northwind Sample Data Service: http://oakleafblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/odataorgs-sql-azure-northwind-sample.html).

Despite the Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate header, SQL Azure OData responses aren''t compressed. I agree with this comment by Scott Hanselman - failure to compress OData responses is LAME.

  19. SQL Elastic Job Agent

As a SQL DBA, I would like SQL Elastic Job Agent to send email or webhook alert when a job fails, retries, starts, or finished. Alternatively, I would like diagnostics logging or metrics for failed jobs.

Integration with Azure Monitor would be preferred.

    Thank you!

  20. sp_msforeachdb for Azure Database

SQL Server 2008 through 2016 had this undocumented stored procedure which allowed the DBA's to execute a certain task/script on multiple database at one shot but with Azure database/logical server this stored procedure is no more available.
