SQL Database

  1. Expose Resource Governor for SQL Azure

If we had the ability to define certain connection DTU limits in SQL Azure it would facilitate common scenarios like using the OLTP database for other, less important requests like reporting without fearing a long running report will cause the application using the OLTP side of things getting slow or unresponsive.

Basically, just give us access to Resource Governor from on-prem SQL Server.

Please improve the time zone of Azure SQL Database so that users can change it.

When migrating to Azure SQL Database, it takes a lot of time to change all the programs of the application.

  3. Would like to deny schema access to sql azure database owner (not db_owner role)

Once a sql azure database is created by a login, we would like to be able to stop this login from seeing data in the schemas. Row security can be used to hide the data but a user logged in with this login can turn the row security off and then get access to the data.

  5. Elastic Database jobs support for V12 dacpac

The current elastic jobs only support V11 dacpac deployments which do succeed in deploying to all of the shards in an elastic pool. The V12 features which we are using (mainly around JSON functions) prevent us from being able to create a V11 dacpac. The only current workaround is to create the tsql scripts via schema compare and modify them to be idempotent to be executed by the elastic job. This is becoming a large task to keep up with our database developers.

  6. parallelism

The cost threshold for parallelism of azure sql databases should be a database setting thats configurable. At the moment it's an instance setting with it's default value set to 5. Which is just to low.

  7. Include improved & regressed query plan links in sys.dm_db_tuning_recommendations

When you enable Automatic Index Tuning, and Azure adds indexes, the portal's validation screen shows a count of the number of improved and regressed queries. However, there's no easy way to tell which queries they were.

To facilitate that, how about in the "details" JSON column of sys.dm_db_tuning_recommendations, you add something to help us join to Query Store or the plan cache to see which queries they were?

  8. Allow connection from Power BI

I'd like the option to allow connections from Power BI ONLY
    Current options allow me to

    1. Allow access to Azure services
Not sufficient, will allow connection from all resources in Azure

    2. IP Whitelist
As far as I understand it's not possible to whitelist Power BI without whitelisting an entire data center

    3. Virtual network
This alternative allow me to install a VM with Gateway, however this results in unnecessary costs

  10. Add Azure SQL Database Memory Usage Metric In the Portal

Azure SQL Database has ton of metrics available for monitoring in the portal. It would be complete if Microsoft could create a metric for monitoring Memory also.

  11. Distributed / cross-database queries within an elastic pool

We're familiar with elastic queries, but there's a class of cross-database query scenarios that they don't address.

What we really need is the ability to perform a query across multiple databases. In SQL Server on-premises, this is done with a three- or four-part notation to reference the external database. That option doesn't exist in Azure and is required for a number of scenarios.

For example, Dynamics GP uses multiple databases, so it simply can't run on Azure SQL. We have additional third-party systems that have the same requirement. So we literally have no way to move to Azure as a…

  12. Increase the max database size

Our clients frequently have multi-terabyte databases, which instantly removes SQL DB as an option. Having to scale to P11 and pay $7K/mo for only 1TB seems outrageous. Storage it cheap, even in high IOPS scenarios. We would use SQL DB more often if storage were increased significantly.

  13. Enable Query Data Store in Secondary Geo Replicated Databases

We use Geo Replicated Secondaries to distribute query load among the secondaries. Right now, QDS is only available for the Primary. It would be really nice if we could use all the power of QDS on the secondaries to diagnose issues.

  14. Enable GZip/Deflate Compression of SQL Azure OData Response

OData's AtomPub protocol is very verbose. My calculations indicate that AtomPub multiplies Data Transfer Out bytes by a factor of 8.75. (See Querying OData.org’s SQL Azure Northwind Sample Data Service: http://oakleafblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/odataorgs-sql-azure-northwind-sample.html).

Despite the Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate header, SQL Azure OData responses aren''t compressed. I agree with this comment by Scott Hanselman - failure to compress OData responses is LAME.

  15. Support Event Grid for triggers and/or service broker external activator

I know Azure Event Grid has been released as preview. SQL Server has features like triggers and service broker that are not currently supported by Azure SQL.

Do you happen to support Azure Event Grid on Azure SQL so that we can implement triggers and/or service broker external activator?

  16. Thesaurus support in SQL Azure

SQL Azure do support Full Text Search but thesaurus is not included. I know few partners requesting for this feature because for their ecommerce portal they are using SQL Azure and User Search is an integral part in any ecommerce portal. They are finding it hard to design an appropriate search functionality without out of the box thesaurus support.

Incase SQL Azure team can take-up this feature that would be great.

    Regards,
    Zainu

  17. Database Swap

    Hey team,

It would be a very nice feature to be able to swap a staging database to production without renaming or downtiming.

    Cheers!

  18. Add support for OLE DB connections to Azure SQL DB that support Azure Active Directory Authentication

When working with a client recently they wanted to put data into Azure SQL DB using SSIS and the OLE DB destination component. They were unable to do this because they have a hard requirement to use Windows Authentication. Azure SQL DB supports Azure Active Directory Authentication now, however the OLE DB component does not support this.

Please could support for this be added.

  19. Bring back T-SQL debugger (and make it work with MI)

The T-SQL debugger, while not perfect, was a very useful tool for me. We've recently migrated a large database with some complex SPs from MySQL to an Azure Managed Instance, and while the debugger did not work with the MI, it did work with our on-prem dev server. Using the debugger has made it so much easier to track down where something has gone awry. I was very disappointed to learn that it's being removed completely in SSMS 18.

  20. Cancel Updating database pricing tier on Azure Portal

Sometimes it would be good to cancel a scale event instead of letting it finish, then re-scaling back.

    Examples include:
    - Human error when creating scale event (Wrong DB, Wrong Size, etc).
    - Scale event taking too long
    - Changed mind
