SQL Database

  1. Support Transact-SQL Bulk Insert on SQL Database

Bulk Insert is usefull to import large data set set in SQL
The data file may be hosted in a storage blob

It looks that bcp can be used but this is an "out of process" method and it's limited to 1000 rows (?!?)

    http://thecodegarden.net/bulk-insert-azure-sql/

In my case, it's for exporting/importing tenant data in a multi-tenancy application. Dataset may have million rows.

  2. Per server DTU bundles

Can we get a server with fixed DTUs and be billed on the per server DTU rather than for each individual database? This is useful when migrating from on-premise + when I want to manage the per database DTU by myself or I just don't want to care about the per database DTU.

Elastic pool based on the server!

  3. Allow to query analysis services directly from sql database

Right now there is no way to combine results from sql and azure analysis services without additional layer of code that would query analysis services and insert results to sql database.

Before azure we had something called OPENQUERY, that would allow us to query on the specified linked server using syntax that makes sense for that linked server (for example MDX).

Current implementation of azure elastic query doesn't really help in this situation.

  4. Provide a REST API to retrieve access keys as other Azure services, RedisCache, DocumentDB and Azure Storage

RedisCache, DocumentDB and Azure Storage provide a REST API to retrieve access keys. Since Azure SQL now is a cloud platform service, it should provide a similar REST API to retrieve access keys.

  5. Azure Sql Import Bacpac slow

We are testing a production database migration to Azure SQL. The database is 50GB and even on the S3 tier we are going on 30 hours still and the import isn't complete (pegged at 100% DTU). At this point I couldn't even tell you when this will finish. I understand I could have chosen the highest premium tier to import this and it might have been quicker, however I only want to test this database and right now I've lost 3-4 days on this (importing at S0, S1 tiers). My suggestion is to allow an option when going through the…

  6. Missing Firewall option in new portal

I read in some documentation that I can set firewall options in the new portal. However, I can't find it anywhere in the new portal.
I had to switch to the old portal to allow my IP addrress access.

I do see that the documentation here needs fixing (will submit this request to the content team):

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/sql-database-configure-firewall-settings/

In the meantime, you can do the following:
If you’re not currently connected, connect to the Azure portal.
On the default blade, click SQL servers.
On the SQL servers blade, click the server on which to create the firewall rule.
You’ll see a blade with a Settings section and “Firewall” as an option.

    Thanks for submitting this feedback.

  8. Active Geo replication to different subscription

Customers are looking for this type of feature to replicate data from Prod in UAT/Test. Also to make the database available for third party to separate the costing. Currently custom coding or replication tools are needed, but would be great if the secondary replica can be in another subscription

  9. Add confirmation requirements on actions which could damage the system

    Hi,

Presently its possible to delete a db and scale down a db without a confirmation. This is very dangerous. While its possible to restore a db this will still result in down time (quite a bit if the db is large). The same goes for scaling down. Should by accident the wrong size be chosen the production environment can be severely hampered as has occurred to us today.

Please add confirmations at least to these areas. Password protection requirement to deleting a db/server should also be implemented in my opinion.

    Thank you
    Ron

  10. Add Log Reader functionality to SQL Server like ApexSQL Log

It is nearly impossible to read db logs. The ApexSQL Log tool does this well. This functionality should be in SQL Server. It would be very useful for MS to purchase this product and incorporate it into SQL Server, or rewrite it as necessary for inclusion.

  11. New SQL Database pricing tiers P12, P13, P14

Currently there are P11 and P15 SQL Database pricing option which 1.75k eDTU and 4k eDTU and price difference is x3 of P11. Can we add P12, P13 and P14 pricing tiers with 2.5k eDTU, 3k eDTU and 3.5k eDTU

  12. Azure database export fails when split_string is involved

    Database compatabilty level 130.

    Repro steps:

    alter function dbo.tt
    (@id varchar(max))
    returns table
    return
    select
    * from
    dbo.string_split(@id,',') t
    inner join
    dbo.numbers n
    on n.id=t.value

Export dacpac fails stating unresolved reference split_string,while the function itself works

  15. Implement Optimize for Ad Hoc Workloads Option for Azure Database

Please consider implementing a feature to allow turning on the optimize for ad hoc workloads option on a per-database basis for Azure databases. Right now this option is only available in on-premises SQL Server on a server-wide basis, where it's a great help for managing plan cache memory when dealing with 3rd party applications where we have no control over the SQL that gets thrown at the database. It would be great to be able to enable this option on a per-database basis in Azure. If you decide to implement this feature, then it would seem logical that turning the…

  16. Support native SQL backup/restore for SQL Database...like RDS....

Bacpacs are cumbersome and difficult to work with. Things would be much simpler if SQL Database supported native SQL backup.restore...like RDS.

  17. Improve warning when enabling Sql Auding

When enabling Sql Auditing downlevel clients will no longer will be able to connect to the database.

There is currently an information icon and description that does not match the severity of the consequences.

I strongly recommend to improve the warning. I've attached a suggestion.

  18. Automatic Fail-over to secondary region similar to Global DocumentDB

Recently, Microsoft introduced a feature "Global DocumentDB database" along with "multi-homing APIs" which provides transparent & automatic fail-over to secondary database with no human intervention.

It will be helpful to have a similar feature for Azure SQL Database where users can enable Geo-Replication and will not have to worry about manual fail-over to secondary in case when Primary / master is unavailable

  19. BUG in Azure SQL

I got an issue while working with Azure SQL. Actually, SSMS does allow to connect with the Azure SQL Server with below mentioned name:

For Example I gave server name as "abcd123.database.windows.net" with login name "demo@abcd" .SSMS through an error stating "Cannot open server abcd requested by login"

But, Azure portal allow us to create server with this credential. The issue is with any server created with name in the above format . You can test creating a server with name "abcdeq123.database.windows.net" with admin login name"demo@abcdeq". It allows you to create a server with this name in azure portal but when…

  20. SQL Azure Import data from Local Excel (PowerBI) Instance

Currently to use Azure with Excel and import data from Excel to MSSQL Azure you must install MSSQL on the local machine and import and pass the data to Azure which somewhat negates the benefit of Azure.

Reference this superuser post for details on the workaround http://superuser.com/a/789290/76498 . Given that PowerQuery is now an awesome ETL tool and is in the flow from data to PowerBI being able to seemelessly backup your imported and related data from Excel and PowerPivot to Azure just makes sense, it then also follows the same could/would occur from PowerBI as it also has PowerQuery.
