1. Instructions on how to create the 'always free' for 12 months Azure SQL Database

I believe there should be some basic instruction on how to create the ’12 months always free’ SQL database listed in this document: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-in/free/free-account-faq/. The link provided for the SQL database in this document (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-in/services/sql-database/) does nothing to explain which configuration choices you need to make to get the actual free version. As a beginner to Azure, I’ve found this especially difficult and frustrating - especially since I have got certifications in SQL Server (the non-cloud variety) and usually fly my way around the tools.

2. No visibility to database restore in the queue

Simple database restores (<5Mb database) takes hours to restore, because many other restores are in the queue from other Azure customers. I have no visibility to this, so how would I know that my restore isn't actually having a problem.

3. add PREDICT function / integration with Azure ML to Azure SQL

the PREDICT functionality is an incredible capability. many customers using Azure SQL could benefit from this.

4. Platform Managed Scheduled DTU Scaling

For predictable workloads DTU based Sql databases should be able to scale based on a defined schedule.

Schedules should be triggers defined like TaskSchd to enable the target SLA to be defined at a TIME on multiple days.

Scaling can currently be achieved via automate accounts and runbooks, TSQL, or via the Azure Portal, but automated options require storage of credentials, credentials which have high access levels (ALTER DATABASE) thus pose significant risk.

Platform managed schedules should set the Tier and Edition based on a time and day trigger.

Time of Day should be linked to a target TimeZone.

Multiple…

6. Allow searching the contents of Office documents via Full Text Catalog in Azure SQL

Currently Azure SQL Full Text Catalog does not support the indexing of the text contents of any office files stored in a table. This only works later office files on on-prem SQL Server with the addition of filter packs on the server.

These cannot be installed on the Azure SQL. Can we have an update on Azure SQL Full Text indexing to inclide the contents of Office files.

7. Elastic Job Agent : Inklude Private Link Access

When Azure SQL database is configured to use "Private endpoint connection" without public network access, the Elastic Job agent isn't able to connect to the SQL database.

8. Create contained user from service principal by application id

Currently, service principals can only be created by display name using: CREATE USER [<service principal display name>] FROM EXTERNAL PROVIDER.

It would be really nice (and less error prone) to be able to add a service principal by application id (or another immutable property).

CREATE USER [<application_id>] FROM EXTERNAL PROVIDER.

9. Azure Portal Long-Term Retention Backups - restore to an ElasticPool or Standard S0

Azure Portal , restoring a LTR ( Long-Term Retention Backup ) of a long deleted database.

When trying to restore the LTR backup you are not able to select a Standard S0 compute storage or select an existing ElasticPool to restore to.

Please add that possibility to Azure-Portal for Azure SQL Long-Term Retention Backups.

See attached picture.

10. Make the Availability Zone feature available to the SQL HyperScale Tier

Currently, SQL HyperScale does not support Availability Zone and Geographic Replication; the Business Critical and General Purpose level offers 4T storage capacity. This greatly limits the use of Azure SQL, not offering a Disaster Recovery solution for Tier SQL HyperScale.

11. Azure SQL Serverless support for LTR with pausing

The fact pausing & long term retention (LTR) are incompatible in Azure SQL Serverless is pretty much a deal breaker for us. Adding this capability would be a huge benefit for us and I'm assuming others that have the same data retention policies we do.

12. balance pages on extent spilt to avoid further extent allocation

Problem:
if you have a recently rebuilt or reorganised index (as per best practice), and you have a random insert which causes a page split then a new extent needs to be allocated.
(this is expected and understood behavior)
The problem is that these extents are not balanced.
before:
extent 1: 8 full pages.
after:
extent 1: 7 full pages, 1 half-page (from split)
extent 2: 1 half-page (from split)

Consequence of problem:
If this table receives further inserts with high probability extent 1 is split in an unbalanced manner again.

This has several major consequences:
1) if you have…

13. Improve side-effect detection in scalar/table valued function

The following few lines work in a normal batch but not in a table valued function where the function cannot be created because of alleged side-effects in the DELETE statement although there are none.

DECLARE @recipeList TABLE (row_id [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, recipe_id INT);

INSERT INTO @recipeList (recipe_id) VALUES (1),(2),(2),(3)
DELETE b FROM @recipeList a CROSS JOIN @recipeList b WHERE a.recipe_id = b.recipe_id AND a.row_id < b.row_id;

on the other hand a simple

DELETE FROM @recipeList

works also within a table valued function as expected.

14. Remember ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION setting for Azure tempdb

We have stored procedures that use snapshot isolation, and also create temp tables. This requires ALLOWSNAPSHOTISOLATION to be ON in tempdb. On an Azure Managed Instance, this setting is reset anytime the server restarts, or anytime TEMPDB is re-created (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-sql/database/doc-changes-updates-release-notes?tabs=single-database#tempdb-structure-and-content-is-re-created).

15. Managed identity ActiveDirectoryMSI on Azure Portal

Hi team

Please can you enable ActiveDirectoryMSI based connection string as well for JDBC Connection Strings in the azure Portal when SQL Database is being seen by the user.

Currently the ConnectionString panel for SQL Database lists out only Sql Auth, AD password based, AD Integrated examples. It would really help someone in future if an example is provided for ActiveDirectoryMSI as well as shown in Article https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/connect/jdbc/connecting-using-azure-active-directory-authentication?view=sql-server-ver15 for Managed Identity based Connections

The lack of correct Connection Strings on the SQL Database Blade actually wasted my team's 8 hours of productivity.

thank you

16. Azure SQL Database cannot use External tables and PEP at the same time.

As per Microsoft Ticket: 121012125003847

I can either use a Private End-Point (PEP) with Deny Public Access or External Tables; but not both at the same time. This is completely unacceptable. This means that I can either have access to my data, OR have my data secured - but not both...

Please resolve this SOONEST possible.

19. API to copy the automated backups of azure sql databases and managed instances

We want to keep the transactionally consistent incremental backups for more than 35 days. The automated backups doesn't allow that. Long term backups are taken at weekly (monthly/yearly) frequency and we want backups taken hourly/daily. The export of database via sqlpackage is not transactionally consistent. Hence, an API to copy the automated backups of azure sql databases and managed instances would help us. The similar API is supported by the amazon RDS.
