SQL Database

  1. Give access to Full Text Search crawl logs.

Troubleshooting Full Text Search issues would be much easier having access to FTS crawl logs.

  2. Azure SQL Managed Instance - Encrypt multiple db's with different asymmetric keys

The big blocker for us moving to Azure SQL Managed Instance is that we will not be able to provide our customers the option of BYOK.

We need to be able to set a separate asymmetric key as the TDE protector for each database, allowing our customers to set their own encryption key for their own database.

Right now, Managed Instances allows only setting one TDE protector per instance, not per database. We cannot be expected to pay for an additional instance for each database just to be able to encrypt each database with different keys. This is already possible…

  3. Ability to create consolidated Vulnerability scan report across multiple sql servers/databases

Allow to create aggregate reports by sql servers and its databases instead of database by database which does not scale

  4. Azure SQL managed instance replication - general availability time frame?

I understand replication for Azure SQL Managed instance is in preview mode. Wondering, if you have any approximate time frame when it can be used for Production database. Looks like decision makers in my company would feel comfortable once the product is in 'general availability' mode

  5. make harder to delete resources on azure portal

Clicking "Delete" on pinned SQL Database in the Azure Portal Dashboard doesn't ask for confirmation. This should be fixed. Also, two-factor authentication for delete actions would be perfect.

  6. Bring back T-SQL debugger (and make it work with MI)

The T-SQL debugger, while not perfect, was a very useful tool for me. We've recently migrated a large database with some complex SPs from MySQL to an Azure Managed Instance, and while the debugger did not work with the MI, it did work with our on-prem dev server. Using the debugger has made it so much easier to track down where something has gone awry. I was very disappointed to learn that it's being removed completely in SSMS 18.

  7. Got "Setup Failed" during installation of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

    Got "Setup Failed"
"The certificate was explicitly marked as untrusted by the user (0x800B0111)"
during installation of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

I have to say, I didn't change any certificates before installation and follow all provided instructions...
After I got this issue, I tryed to solve this with provided documentation: I didn't find any installed files or folders in Registry to delete.
Also, I got the same issue while installing older versions of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
I cannot find any useful information what is the main problem :(

    I have Windows 10 x64 OS. Added log file…

  8. Provide SQL Server Connector functionality for Azure SQL PaaS

In order for an EKM provider to communicate with an Azure Key Vault the database must be either Azure SQL IaaS or an on-prem instance of SQL Server. When using Azure SQL Paas, however, it would be great to have this level of security available as well as the ability to manage credentials in one area and within a Key Vault.

  9. Authenticate using Azure AD DS

Just like how Azure Files supports authenticating using Azure AD Credentials from Azure AD DS domain joined machines, it would be great to be able to authenticate to Azure SQL in a similar manner.

We have some legacy apps running in Azure VMs that users log into, it would be great to be able to authenticate to SQL using their current logged in credentials (similar to how Windows or Azure AD Integrated authentication works)

Currently we are prompting them for credentials and using the Active Directory Password authentication mode.

  10. Enable resource move feature for Azure SQL Managed Instance

Azure SQL managed instances are not movable across subscription. Provide the ability to move Virtual Cluster and Managed Instance.

  11. Add ability to view the elastic pool scaling progress/percent complete in SSMS or portal and also to kill the scaling process and resubmit

Add ability to view the elastic pool scaling progress/percent complete in SSMS or portal and also to kill the scaling process and resubmit scaling just in case if its stuck due to MSFT internal maintenance or any other factors.

  12. support for creating database scoped credential with AAD

When logged in with an Azure AD account ,creating a database scoped credential does not work.

    The error I get is:
"The specified schema name "<myusername>@<domain>.com" either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it."
(My user is member of the db_owner role)

As a work around I have to log in with a SQL account and run the same script.

We get the same error when creating a schema with an AD account but the way to get it to work is to add the authorization.

    for example:
    create schema [test] -- > does not…

  13. Enable “per-database charge for elastic pools” in Azure SQL Database (PaaS) Platform.

Enable “per-database charge for elastic pools” in Azure SQL Database (PaaS) Platform.

. SQL Database Elastic Pool is a shared resource model that enables higher resource utilization efficiency, with all the databases within an elastic pool sharing predefined resources within the same pool. There is no per-database charge for elastic pools. You are billed for each hour a pool exists at the highest end or vCores, regardless of usage or whether the pool was active for less than an hour

  14. Allow connection from Power BI

I'd like the option to allow connections from Power BI ONLY
    Current options allow me to

    1. Allow access to Azure services
Not sufficient, will allow connection from all resources in Azure

    2. IP Whitelist
As far as I understand it's not possible to whitelist Power BI without whitelisting an entire data center

    3. Virtual network
This alternative allow me to install a VM with Gateway, however this results in unnecessary costs

  16. Enable XE sqlserver.backup_restore_progress_trace

This event was introduced in SQL Server 2016 and is also available in Azure SQL Database Managed Instance.
In order to track (automated) backup times/running time and restore progress this would be very helpful in backup/restore monitoring for Azure SQL Database.

  18. Bug when exporting job database

Error encountered during the service operation.
One or more unsupported elements were found in the schema used as part of a data package.

  19. Recover SQL Server

There is an option to recover deleted SQL databases. But when by accident you've deleted the server there is no chance to recover the server back up (if you don't configured a backup).
Of course a warned man counts for two and you definitely need to configure backup. It would be nice if the same option as recover databases was available with recover sql servers.

  20. Implement Azure SQL Server backup

At present, MS is not offering any backup capabilities for backing up an Azure SQL Server(Logical container) and master database. Please include them in the offering as this will help customers to recover from accidental deletions/catastrophes. MS did mention that it can be restored from product group on best effort basis if its within 7 days however no guarantee was provided.
