SQL Database

  1. Management connectivity from Azure via separate nic

    We use ExpressRoute and do not allow public IP's in our VNets. This causes a problem when it comes to deploying SQL Managed instance, as we need to allow inbound connectivity on ports 9000, 9003, 1438, 1440, 1452. Could it not be arranged for this connectivity to happen via a separate network unseen to the consumer so that no inbound firewall rules are required?

  2. Support AzureRm powershell sending database/server audit logs to write to Log Analytics

    Azure Automation account still dont fully support Az modules. It is very hard to setup a new Automation account with Az only.

    I have a lot of Runbooks written using AzureRm and would like the RM to be updated to include the log analytics workspace instead of only storage.

    AZ command: (supports Log Analytics)

     Set-AzSqlServerAuditing

    Set-AzSqlDatabaseAuditing

    AzureRm Command: (does not support Log Analytics)

      Set-AzureRmSqlServerAuditing

    Set-AzureRmSqlDatabaseAuditing

  3. Build SSDT Database Project for Azure SQL Database Fails with AAD Users

    When adding an AAD user to a database project of type Azure SQL Database, the build fails with incorrect syntax on "FROM EXTERNAL PROVIDER", even when trying to add the uses in a post deployment script. However if the type is changed to Azure SQL Database Managed Instance, the project builds correctly.

  4. Bring Scalar UDF Inlining to Azure SQL Database

    SQL Server 2019 was released today with the feature Scalar UDF Inlining. This feature is currently not available in Azure SQL database.

  5. Enable serverless feature via ARM template

    Currently serverless feature not supported by ARM template. Manually changing to serverless from the portal results in an sku name of GPSGen5_1 (choosing the most basic). If I update my fully-working ARM template with this SKU name (instead of S0) for example, I get an error on deployment reporting:

    "error": {

    "code": "InvalidSkuName",

    "message": "Invalid SKU name 'GP_S_Gen5_1'."

    }

    However this is already the value of the sku name on resource JSON export as a result of the change via Portal.

    NOTE: There were other detected changes to the JSON export (from Portal changes), which I also ensured…

  6. Azure SQL DB DACPAC task in DEvOps does not support AD authentication with a SErvice Principal

    The only way to deploy to Azure SQL DB using the DACPAC task in Azure Devops is to use SQL Login Authentication. Microsoft Integrated authentication does not work despite the options being available (perhaps because it's connecting to Azure SQL DB and not Managed Instance or Enterprise).

    This means I have to add user security groups manually to my Azure SQL DB rather than in a DevOps task.

  7. Include improved & regressed query plan links in sys.dm_db_tuning_recommendations

    When you enable Automatic Index Tuning, and Azure adds indexes, the portal's validation screen shows a count of the number of improved and regressed queries. However, there's no easy way to tell which queries they were.

    To facilitate that, how about in the "details" JSON column of sys.dmdbtuning_recommendations, you add something to help us join to Query Store or the plan cache to see which queries they were?

  8. firewall

    Track Firewall Rules for Change Management and Security
    It would be great if there was an historical record of firewall rules from inception of both the Azure SQL server as well as any Database. What should be recorded is the user/principal that added/deleted/modified a firewall rule(s) and the context of that rule(s). There needs to be the ability to store this (an all auditing information) for long term storage, securely, and this should allow for interaction into Log Analytics, Security Center and Alerting. Finally, there should not be different methods for logging this information but universally standardized, example, using the…

  9. SQL Database must have configuration time for apply new patches

    Currently, azure apply patches and update during the working hours for the Azure database. Due to that business affected.

  10. Total backup storage amount of SQL Databases

    We need to have an option that it permits find the total amount of Azure backup storage used for all databases into the Azure SQL Server, when you have more that five DBs into an Azure SQL Server is too complicated have the total amount.

  11. Read data from Azure Blob store into SQL

    Please implement a method for reading data from Azure Blob into SQL DB.

    2 of the top 3 issues are asking for this, both have been rejected - please impletent a method that would be allowable.

  12. zone

    Allow zone redundancy to be available for DTU pricing model when DB size is greater than 1TB. The only recourse we have when a DTU DB needs to be bumped past 1TB is to switch it to vCore, and that is not always the direction we want to take.

  13. Instant Zero-Copy Clones of entire database or single tables

    If you want to differentiate from AWS, then it is better to stop comparing prices, and think about data management. Customers need a quick way to test production DBs without having to wait for hours to create a copy. So, just provide a facility to do instantaneous zero-copy clones of entire databases in a second. Or to go even further, provide a way to instantly clone single tables. It is not that hard to actually build this, and I bet this will give Azure SQL a significant advantage in the market place. Happy to give you more data management ideas…

  14. Increase the SQL pool size to 4TB in 500eDTU

    We have less number of customers and they want to keep 10 years of data. So we need more storage space than the performance. Please give an option to increase the storage to 4TB in 500 eDTU in premium tier

    Thank you.

  15. Permissions dropped and recreated by SSDT during publish

    SSDT drops and recreates permissions during publish. Without any changes being made to the project, I can repeatedly publish, and SSDT will generate a bunch of these:

    PRINT N'Dropping Permission...';
    GO
    REVOKE...

    followed by a bunch of these:

    PRINT N'Creating Permission...';
    GO
    GRANT... ... AS [dbo]

    It doesn't do this if I use the Azure admin user, but that's not a suitable user to use as we have several developers who may publish to certain dbs. It does do it if I use a database user which is a member the the db_owner database role.

    If I specify in my…

  16. VSCode unable to create a firewall

    VS Code (SQL server connect) asks me to create a firewall when trying to connect to an Azure SQL db (Yes. My account is already logged in).

    When creating the firewall, it asks for start and end IPs, and then throws me the error mentioned in the screenshot.

    (PS: I already have a valid firewall for my server. So, I am also unable to understand why VScode asks me to create a new one)

  17. Make the .NET ConnectionString’s ConnectionTimeout property apply when resuming an Azure SQL Serverless Database

    Currently, the only way to retry the initial connection to a paused Serverless database is to implement a custom retry policy. This seems like overkill, especially if you are using a .NET ConnectionString to configure your connection.

    The .NET ConnectionString property for ConnectionTimeout sets the time to wait (in seconds) while trying to establish a connection before terminating the attempt and generating an error. This property does not work with the Serverless Azure SQL database tier. I tested this with a 1000 second timeout and the connection always fails in about 40 seconds when trying to connect to a paused…

  18. Support update of backup retention days via the azure cli

    The Azure CLI for SQL MI instances does not support update of the backup retention time. The documentation does not seem to refer to such an option, leaving only powershell and the REST APIs as options.

  20. connecting to a serverless db using an alias should wake db

    currently if you connect to an azure sql serverless db using an alias, the db will not start no matter how many times you try to connect or what connection timeout is used. this works as expected if you use the real sql server name.
