SQL Database

  1. Enable elastics jobs to use managed service identity

SQL Server now supports MSI and yet Elastic Jobs still relies on SQL user credentials. It would be much better to be able to give a job an AD identity that can be managed and can be given rights on certain servers and databases.

  2. HIPAA Compliance for Azure Database Migration Service

Azure Database Migration Service is not HIPAA compliant. How can we move terabytes of PHI data to Azure SQL DB?

  5. A feature request from customer: SQL DB should calculate each schema's size for customer automatically

A feature request from customer: SQL DB should calculate each schema's size for customer automatically rather than let customer use DMV to calculate which is very time and resource consuming.

    Current query:
    SELECT SUM(reserved_page_count)*8*1024 FROM sys.dm_db_partition_stats, sys.objects WHERE sys.dm_db_partition_stats.object_id = sys.objects.object_id and sys.objects.schema_id={0}

  6. Make Standard Reports Available for Azure SQL

It has always been helpful to be able to right click on a database, go to Reports -> Standard Reports and run things like "Index Usage Statistics", etc. I know you can get it all via DMV's, etc. but it's nice to be able to just click a couple times and get a report generated.

  7. Allow ElasticPool SQL Database to join P2S Virtual Network (VPN) - Round 2

This is round 2 of the idea posted here:

    https://feedback.azure.com/forums/217321-sql-database/suggestions/5537689-allow-sql-database-to-join-virtual-network-vpn?tracking_code=704e9fed32d702f27033e3c1be63d789

which was closed since SQL databases now have "virtual network" endpoints. However, these endpoints still do not work with P2S VPN connections using Azure VPN Gateway, so I don't know why this idea was closed as completed.

This means that we either need to create our own workarounds, such as SSH tunnels via VMs inside Azure, or we need to keep using the IP whitelisting method (the latter of which defeats the whole purpose of using a VNET-based access control). In addition, security auditors don't look kindly on databases with…

  9. TDE- Encryption Key Rotation

Service-Managed keys are said to be protected by built0in server certificates, however it does not state the following:

1, How often the keys are rotated.
2, How are the keys backed up.
3, How to access the keys.

    Reference doc missing the info:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-database/transparent-data-encryption-azure-sql?view=sql-server-2017

  11. query optimizer assumes uniform distribution

The query optimizer makes 4 assumptions about the data in tables.
One of them is that the values in statistics are uniformly distributed in the table.
For example, we have a table with 1,000,000 rows and
in one column half are '0' and '1'.
    The column statistics show this.
All the '1' values are at the front of the table and all the '0' at the back.
For a query like "select .. where flag = '0'",
the query optimizer picks a "cluster index scan" execution plan
because the uniformity assumptions makes in think the values are
    0 1 0…

  12. Option to disable transaction logging in Azure SQL Database

We are using Azure SQL Database for processing large amount of data and building data warehouse. By default Azure SQL database logs every write operation (DML) which impacts the data processing time. It would be great if there is option (with disclaimer) to disable the transaction logging to use Azure SQL Database for large scale analytical applications.

  14. Advance filtering for Azure Database for threat detection

We often receive alerts for "Someone has logged on to your SQL server '***' from an unusual location.". Most of the time, this was triggered by our DBAs within our office network. As the subscription owner receives too much of these "false-negative" alerts, these alert no longer make sense to them.

Our office had a dynamic pool of public IPs. If Azure could implement an advance whitelisting feature, this would be a great help.
For example, if DBA groups access these DBs from an IP range.

  15. Enable access to SQL Server/ Storage accounts via P2S VPN

Currently when the Azure resources (SQL server/ Storage accounts) are associated with P2S VPN VNET they are accessible in the VMs created in same subnet only via client tools. If possible kindly allow the resource access via the VPN connection on the client machine. In this case a User doesn't need to include the Network client IP in the allowed network range and it will allow to keep Firewall configuration restricted to some office network (if required) and baseline minimal networks in advanced security.

  16. Enable same region support for VNET Integration

Currently if you enable VNET Integration for an azure storage account in the same region as Azure SQL Server, Polybase access to the content in the storage account fails. App Services has a VNET Integration feature in preview that allows same region access as an example.
