SQL Database

  1. Use T-SQL to query DB/Server Tags

    I would like to be able to query the DB and server tags via T-SQL so that I can use it in queries

  2. Recover SQL Server

    There is an option to recover deleted SQL databases. But when by accident you've deleted the server there is no chance to recover the server back up (if you don't configured a backup).
    Of course a warned man counts for two and you definitely need to configure backup. It would be nice if the same option as recover databases was available with recover sql servers.

  3. Implement Azure SQL Server backup

    At present, MS is not offering any backup capabilities for backing up an Azure SQL Server(Logical container) and master database. Please include them in the offering as this will help customers to recover from accidental deletions/catastrophes. MS did mention that it can be restored from product group on best effort basis if its within 7 days however no guarantee was provided.

  4. Azure SQL DB DACPAC task in DEvOps does not support AD authentication with a SErvice Principal

    The only way to deploy to Azure SQL DB using the DACPAC task in Azure Devops is to use SQL Login Authentication. Microsoft Integrated authentication does not work despite the options being available (perhaps because it's connecting to Azure SQL DB and not Managed Instance or Enterprise).

    This means I have to add user security groups manually to my Azure SQL DB rather than in a DevOps task.

  5. There needs to be an option to get notified when Azure SQL databases are stuck during a scaling execution.

    We scale down and up the databases to save costs at night when no one is using the databases.

    Until this issue is completely resolved, I would like to be able to configure an e-mail notification when the database is stuck. This will allow us to be pro-active in contacting Azure support to expedite remediation.

  6. Add General Purpose service tier supported region

    We were trying to deploy Gen4 resources in different regions. But some deployments fail due to some regions not supporting Gen4. In the Documentation, we found that Australi region is not supporting. But we found that "UAE North", "UK South", "UK West", "South Africa North" and "France Central" also not supporting Gen4 resources. Is it poosible to add this to documentation.? It might help developers to time. :)

  7. merge replication

    Support merge replication between Azure SQL and e.g. occassionally connected laptop clients with sql server express as the subscriber.

  8. [INFORMATION_SCHEMA].[COLUMNS] does not respect DENY column-level permissions

    When a column-level permission is denied to a user, the column is still visible to the user in INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS, and it causes issues when external apps (such as ORM or SSIS) try to access the table.

    Per the documentation at "https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/system-information-schema-views/columns-transact-sql?view=sql-server-2017":

    "Returns one row for each column that can be accessed by the current user in the current database"

    USE [master];
    GO
    BEGIN TRY
    DROP LOGIN [test_user];
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    END CATCH

    CREATE LOGIN [test_user] WITH PASSWORD=N'password', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master], DEFAULT_LANGUAGE=[us_english], CHECK_EXPIRATION=OFF, CHECK_POLICY=OFF;
    GO
    BEGIN TRY
    DROP DATABASE [security_test];
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    END CATCH

    CREATE DATABASE [security_test];
    GO …

  9. Managed Instance availability in Canada East region

    Currently MI is not available in the Canada East region, only Canada Central.

    This effectively invalidates using MI for production environments and requires the customer to accept significant architectural and feature differences between production and DR (if replicating to single SQL DBaaS database), which is bad practice.

    The decision to not have it available in the Canadian region pair is mind boggling.

  10. Choose size of restored database files

    When you restore a database, it creates each files with their original size.
    But sometime you need to extend the file or shrink the files according to the disk space and free space in the original files.
    It would be great to implement a "target size" for each restored file during restoring the database.

  11. Provide the same reports that are available for on-premises SQL Server instances

    In SSMS, when right-clicking a standalone SQL Server database and going to Reports > Standard Reports, there are a large number of predefined reports available.

    However, doing the same on a SQL Azure database yields only two reports.

    It would be extremely useful if some, or preferably all, of the reports available on standalone SQL server instances were also available in SQL Azure. This would also mean questions like https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14685596/queries-to-generate-a-disk-usage-by-top-tables-report-in-sql-azure/14710177 would no longer be necessary.

  12. Be able to set ApplicationIntent in external data sources

    Enable Application Intent in External Data Sources. Azure External Data Sources cannot take advantage of Read Only replicas, even if accessed from a read only replica. The external data source has no way of signaling the Application Intent to the traffic manager. Thus they always point to the read write replica, regardless of how the client is configured.

  14. Add ability to view the elastic pool scaling progress/percent complete in SSMS or portal and also to kill the scaling process and resubmit

    Add ability to view the elastic pool scaling progress/percent complete in SSMS or portal and also to kill the scaling process and resubmit scaling just in case if its stuck due to MSFT internal maintenance or any other factors.

  15. provide query plan in Query performance insights pane in azure portal

    In SQL databases, Query performance insights gives a good view of resource consuming queries. It will be great for developers and operations to have a query plan view for such queries, similar to the one offered in SQL Management Studio.

  16. Generate connection string for Geo-Replica immediately

    In case of DB disaster recovery timing is quite important and DB restoration takes significant time and for us means these steps:
    1) Create new DB from backup (wait for complete)
    2) Enable read-only Geo Replication to 2 regions (wait for complete)
    3) Take connection string from 2 and change devops configs and schedule config build (wait for complete)
    4) Deploy services using config with new connection strings

    So step 3 could be done in parallel to waiting for step 2 if we knew connection string ahead of time and save much valuable time in case of disaster

  17. Support serverless mode for SQL Database Hyperscale as well

    It's so useful for daily batch job or so. We want to avoid unnessary management task for it.

  18. Allow connection from Power BI

    I'd like the option to allow connections from Power BI ONLY
    Current options allow me to

    1. Allow access to Azure services
    Not sufficient, will allow connection from all resources in Azure

    2. IP Whitelist
    As far as I understand it's not possible to whitelist Power BI without whitelisting an entire data center

    3. Virtual network
    This alternative allow me to install a VM with Gateway, however this results in unnecessary costs

  19. Elastic job: Add cron style scheduling

    It would be good to be able to schedule elastic jobs to run for example first Saturday of month at 11.00pm.

  20. support for creating database scoped credential with AAD

    When logged in with an Azure AD account ,creating a database scoped credential does not work.

    The error I get is:
    "The specified schema name "<myusername>@<domain>.com" either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it."
    (My user is member of the db_owner role)

    As a work around I have to log in with a SQL account and run the same script.

    We get the same error when creating a schema with an AD account but the way to get it to work is to add the authorization.

    for example:
    create schema [test] -- > does not…
