Virtual Network Gateway Hours - Pay only for what you use
I just notice, Virtual network gateway hours is not pay when use. Once you create the gateway and extend the Azure virtual network to your premise, it starts to charge no matter what it's connect or disconnect.
From pricing detail, $0.05 per connection-hour (~$38/month).
So, even I shutdown my premise router overnight, I still need to spend min $38 monthly. It is not really "Pay only for what you use".
There are two charges related to the Azure VPN service: the compute resource charge at $0.05/hour, and the egress data volume charge. Both are based on resource consumption, Unfortunately, even if the VPN tunnels are not connected, the gateway compute resource is still being consumed.
The charge is based on business review and common industry practice. We will consider providing the functionality to “STOP” a gateway if the customer is certain that the gateway will not be in use. If this is the request, please open another item and we will track that feature ask accordingly.

I fully understand why this cannot be implemented and AWS has the same restriction. Once your gateway is set up and waiting for you to connect your VPN (or not), the IP endpoint(s) are reserved and cannot be assigned for any other purpose. Otherwise when you connected from your own router to the gateway there would be nothing there. So even though you do not connect, there is a resource in use and it has to be charged for. Suspending it would imply that it could be assigned elsewhere, which in this case would mean that it could not be un-suspended making suspension a non-sequitur. I can think of no way that this could be "improved" unless the gateway IP resources were to be made available at no charge. But then everyone would nail up their VPNs forever. SO either get slick at deleting and re-creating gateways and reprogramming your routers based on the changed resource information (I can do a new one in 5 minutes) or pay the $38 per month.
Will this ever be addressed? Why do we still get billed for items that are not in use. Amazon AWS has never charged for anything like this.
what if you are being charged for the gateway because it was created but NEVER USED
This is saranya.I want to know the Price details of Physical firewall. Are you offers the Virtual firewall logs?and what is the cost for that?
What is the current status?
I have removed my gateway and I am still being charged. does this change only take effect after the billing cycle?
This really is a must to have a STOP feature. I run Azure for my lab which I only want to use for a few hours month, currently with my visual studio subscription, I only just have enough credit to pay for the gateway. That is just ridiculous from Microsoft
Please add a STOP gateway feature, so that the stopped gateway will not be billed. A stopped gateway should be able to be quickly started on demand.
Here is the link to STOP gateway feature request:
"Stop/Start Virtual Network Gateway - to don't pay when it not in use"
I would like to see a STOP feature for the gateway as well. Have you moved this forward any since this thread started in April?
If u can provide a stop function and allow customer to schedule it, it will be helpful.
