  1. Support for Aliassing for Azure file share

To simplify the process of migrating on-prem servers and their data to Azure file share while minimizing the impact to end users (spreadsheets /macro with links to other spreadsheet via UNC path e.t.c.)

For example if my on-prem server file share is \server1.widget.com\fileshare1

My new Azure filesharename is \widgetstorage.file.core.windows.net\fileshare1

I would want to add an alias which which redirects server1.widget.com to \widgetstorage.file.core.windows.net so my users do not need to update their spreadsheet links/macro's e.t.c.

  3. Support multiple cloud endpoints replicated in different regions for DR

Support multiple cloud endpoints, so two storage accounts/shares can be kept in sync in different regions to allow for customer initiated DR in the event of a failover.

At the moment, we cannot recommend Azure File Sync/Azure File Shares, as in the event of a regional outage, we could lose access to all data, until Microsoft recovers the region or initiates a failover (which could be >48 hours.

Having DFS-R on VMs in two regions is much better for DR and regional availability for our US/UK offices.

  5. Allow to exclude files and directories from sync

Please allow exclusion of syncing certain files or directories in Azure File Sync, based on user defined exclusion patterns. The internal list (*.tmp etc.) that is not synced is not enough for our use case.

  6. Allow PaaS databases as allowed exception for Storage Firewall

If we restrict the Storage Account to allow only the selected networks, external services such as SQL Databases will lose the access to Blobs and File Services.
Please allow other azure services as trusted sources to the storage

  7. WOPI API for Azure Files and FileSync for usage in Office Online / 365

Enabling access to Azure Storage / Files for Office 365 could - together with the new Azure File Sync - deliver a completely seemless online and on-premise experience when handling / creating / editing Office files.

  8. mornitor and send email alert when azure file sync status unhealthy

recommend to add more features for the azure file sync on the portal so that cx is able to receive the email alert when the server state on the registered servers blade is “Appears Offline,”

or The timestamps for the Last Attempted Sync for both upload and download are not recent

  9. Explorer.exe hangs after deleting storage Account

If you delete the Storage Account with Files Shares in Azure it will make all Windows clients unusable. (one hour freezes of everything that needs explorer.exe)

    Reproduction:

    1. Go to the Azure Portal and create a Storage Account
    2. Create in this new Storage Account a File Share
    3. Follow the instructions in the Azure Protal to connect a Windows Client. (you can use the Windows Sandbox feature, to don't brick your client)
    4. Go back to the Azure Portal and delete the Storage Account
    5. Go back to your client.
    6. In the Client you can run for example "Get-PsDrive" in a PowerShell and you…

  10. Azure Files Permissions

Azure VM when accessing the mount Azure files we have setup is asking for a username and password when running any .EXE that is in files. We've tried all of our local accounts and even our Azure cloud account and nothing works. Where would we find the permissions for this?

Would like a way to more easily see where to manage these permissions.

  11. Backup of Azure Files with Storage Firewall enabled

Requesting the ability to protect the file share with backup AND have virtual network endpoints enabled. Seems a bit ridiculous that we have to choose security OR snapshots. I know it's still in preview but there hasn't been a lot of movement on this feature since it came out in 2018.

  12. Update Azure File Share (and other Azure services such as Azure Data Factory) to use encryption algorithms that are FIPS compliant

There are many organizations (specifically those in the government) that requires their systems to be FIPS compliant. Azure File Share cannot be mounted on a Linux VM where FIPS is enabled. Azure Data Factory cannot communicate with a Self Hosted Integration Runtime running on a Windows VM where the FIPS policy is enabled. These policies on the Operating System basically enforces that communication with the server uses FIPS compliant encryption algorithms.

Currently there are no work-arounds for these issues except to disable FIPS on the servers that need to communicate with these services. For organizations that require compliance with FIPS,…

  13. More Visibility into files that are not replicated (Azure File Sync)

Visibility into what files are not synchronized Specifically :
    1. The list of files that are not synced between the computers using Azure File Sync
    2. How can I find out the list of files that are ignored vi Azure File Sync and what is the reason for ignoring them

  14. Expose REST version of Invoke-AzStorageSyncChangeDetection

The PowerShell cmdlet Invoke-AzStorageSyncChangeDetection states in its documentation that the main use case is for it to be called by an automated process after that process has modified files in the cloud using the REST API.

Given that for manual storage sync to be required, the files must have been modified using a REST API, implementing this function as a powershell CmdLet seems a strange design choice.

Can you add a publicly documented REST endpoint with the same functionality as the powershell cmdlet so that the code that created the file via REST can also trigger the synchronisation via REST.

  15. Map Azure File share as volume to Web App for Containers

We want to host some web applications in Azure Web App for containers and need to have an external volume mapped to the container. The volume would store the configuration files of the applications, which are java applications that rely rely heavily on big configuration files.

These are legacy applications and cannot easily be changed to start using App Service preferred method of Application Settings.

Since Web Apps for Containers seem to rely on "docker run", it seems allowing it to run also other commands like "docker volume create" could be possible.

  17. Allow to choose file sync direction

It would be great to be able to choose the sync direction for each server endpoint of a sync group, like "upload", "download" or "both". It would allow for a better management of the changes made in the file share.

  18. Can identity access control be enabled for Mac users on File Shares

It would be good if Mac users could connect to Azure File Shares using AD credentials rather than the storage account key

  19. file share all users

I have recently been playing with Azure Files with a view to using it as a bolt on storage area for an SFTP service. Rather than having a local disk we opted for Azure Files instead. When testing we used the following script to map the drive@

    acctKey = ConvertTo-SecureString -String "<Storage_key>" -AsPlainText -Force
    $credential = New-Object System.Management.Automation.PSCredential -ArgumentList "Azure<FIleStoreName>", $acctKey
New-PSDrive -Name Z -PSProvider FileSystem -Root "\<File_Store_Name>.file.core.windows.net<share>" -Scope Global -Persist -Credential $credential

Howerver, as I found out, this is only available in the context of the current user session. Could we make it so mapped drives are…

  20. SMB Multichannel - enable Private endpoints

In the Azure SMB Documentation (https://docs.microsoft.com/it-it/azure/storage/files/storage-files-smb-multichannel-performance)

"Private endpoints for storage accounts are not supported."

    Why?
