Support deduplication of Azure storage objects (blobs and files)
Add support for deduplication of files stored in Azure Files to save storage space (cost). General file savings are about 50% when using deduplication in Windows Server
Thanks for your feedback! We are looking at it to evaluate if we address your feedback and when.

When block level dedup was introduced at the OS level in 2012 rather than being bound to NetApp storage hardware it prompted an environment wide file server rebuild through our company to leverage this fantastic technology.
Now we are on the cusp of moving our unstructured data to the cloud and looking to access it from various sites around the globe and were very happy to see Azure File Sync come to the rescue.
Imagine the disappointment of being informed that all the benefits of leveraging our on Premise disk storage with block level de-duplication would disappear!
I'm very sure that this is not a complex ask as the technology has been available consumers for at least a decade now in hardware or OS form.
I would appeal to Microsoft to fight for this market and put itself ahead of its competitors.

Is Microsoft using data deduplication in their back end storage, but charging customers as though there is no data deduplication?

Any update on this? Block level dedupe would be extremely useful.
Hi Do you have any update about it? is it something in roadmap?

Dedup could be a nice feature to have for azure archive.. where data is not accessed often.

yes it reduces the total file size more 50%. Need this feature.
Concur. De-dupe is huge, a difference maker.
agree, would be great benefit for customers who have large amounts of data in large files!

This will severely reduce flash tier and spinning tier costs since this data is stored in triplicate.
