Add NFS Protocol Support Azures Files Shares OR Support old CFS clients
Azure files shares are awesome. It basically provides a great PAAS NAS for a group of Azure VMs, I can't overstate how useful this feature is.
It's still in preview, but there is a significant problem that won't get added by the time it goes GA. The problem is that many Linux CIFS clients that come on standard builds won't support it. My example is that neither Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.4, nor 7.0 support it (using the Azure templates), even after installing the latest supported CIFS clients.
Since Azure Files shares are basically like NAS for Azure VM's, please realize that one important factor about any good NAS is that it needs to be broad in support for connection protocols. SMB support is the big one, and kudos to the team for making it happen. But, the team has said they have no plans to add support for CIFS on OEL 6.4, and who knows how many other distros won't support it out of the box. Since its not going to be able to support all CIFS clients, then please consider adding NFS support instead. FYI, I also support the request for native FTP/FTPS access from inside and outside.

+1 , please support NFS
we have a few SAN with over 100TB of data that i would love to use azure file sync with, problem is, the client wont work with cifs shares.
NFS Support please! E.G. Mongodb does not work on Azure file as storage, but on nfs.
+1 yes please!! add NFS support

Any update on offering NFS? We really need that offering as well.
NFS support please..

NFS is important not only from a security perspective (as others before me have already pointed out), but also from a performance perspective. Latency and throughput-wise, all tests we performed put NFS at at least double the performance of SMB.
Oh, and while we're at it, can you please look at the throughput of Azure Files? It's 10 times less than the minimum performance offered by Amazon EFS and this makes migrating high traffic legacy applications (of which are plenty) to Azure quite challenging. We'd all love to use Azure Blob storage for our apps, but that's not doable a lot of times.

Please implement NFS. This is important from both feature and security perspectives. Please let us know what we can do to make this happen.

Can we get an update on this?

NFS Support please. We need a file system that understands Unix file permissions. CIFS support is less then ideal when you have to set the file and directory permissions the same on all the files in the share.
Every time you set a file to 0777 you make a sysadmin cry.
