  1. Allow access to Azure Files from multiple tenants

My project requires an SMB file share with Azure AD authentication, which recognizes remote tenant/organization accounts and groups. Currently Azure Files access is limited to a single tenant/subscription.

An alternative could be SharePoint WebDav shared accross multiple tenants, but it is excessive for the task. Or a domain trust, which is excessive too.

  2. Allow Files From Dropbox Installed on VM to be Uploaded to Azure File Share

When a VM has Dropbox installed and a user attempts to copy a file from Dropbox to an Azure File Share (mapped as a network drive) it asks if you want to replace the file even though there is no file with the same name. Tech support confirmed there is a compatibility issue between Dropbox and Azure File Shares.

  3. Add File Sync Alert Conditions

Add File Sync alert conditions such as:
    Cache hit rate
    Drive % full

  4. Display Tier change estimated time of completion/completion percentage

In Azure Files, when transitioning a storage tier, it apparently takes some time before being able to transition the tier again (proportional to the amount of data). It would be nice for this information to be displayed somewhere.

I was changing the access tier for 76TB of data, which apparently takes 27days (unbeknown to me), so I kept receiving an error message when trying to change the tier again for weeks. It would be nice to have an ETA/progress for this.

  5. Make it accessible for Macs running Big Sur

In an mixed environment with PCs and Macs, it should be possible even for the Macs to connect to the file shares. The method explained here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/files/storage-how-to-use-files-mac does NOT work.

  6. SMB Multichannel - enable Private endpoints

In the Azure SMB Documentation (https://docs.microsoft.com/it-it/azure/storage/files/storage-files-smb-multichannel-performance)

"Private endpoints for storage accounts are not supported."

    Why?

  7. Azure Files way too complicated

This is ridiculous. I'm hours in and still nothing usable or accessible.

Just let me make a file share with an IP address accessible from within Azure or clients LAN VPN'd to Azure. It shouldn't be this hard at all. Pages of instructions, piles of Powershell scripts and commands, service accounts... it doesn't make sense..

  8. Allow Azure File Sync IP Whitelisting

To improve security on Azure File Sync, it would be nice to be able to whitelist source IPs/CIDR ranges.

  9. Azure Files SMB for MAC OSX

To make the MAC OSX customers adopt Azure, I strongly suggest Microsoft to create the following features by the end of 2021:

    1. Azure Files SMB components for MAC OSX, so users can easily access company files by smb:// path
    2. Azure VPN Client for MAC OSX with AAD authentication, another crucial feature for Apple users.

These 2 features prevent us from migration a lot of customers, I sincerely think this will provide Microsoft with even more long term growth.

  11. Assign file/folder level permissions to AzureAD users on Azure File Shares

It would great to have the ability to assign NTFS style permissions to folders and files on Azure Files Shares based on AzureAD/O365 accounts.

Currently you have to have AzureAD DS enabled/configured on your tenant, and have a vm joined to that domain services instance with the share mounted to it. For organizations that are moving away from centralized AD, this prevents them from using Azure File shares to replace file servers.

  12. FileSyncErrorsReport.ps1 not checking current logs

FileSyncErrorsReport.ps1 is checking for log files with %4 in their name:

    Microsoft-FileSync-Agent%4ItemResults.evtx
    Microsoft-FileSync-Agent%4ItemResults.evtx

These log files are not currently being updated in any of our Windows Server 2019 VMs.

Instead, the correct, updated log files are:

    Microsoft-FileSync-AgentItemResults.evtx
    Microsoft-FileSync-AgentItemResults.evtx

Without modifying the FileSyncErrorsReport.ps1 file, we do not receive the correct troubleshooting information.

We are using the most up-to-date agent (at this time of writing) 11.1.0.0

  13. The ability to lock folder so their content is not tiered

It would be useful if you could lock a folder so that the content residing within the folder is excluded from cloud tiering. This would be similar to the OneDrive feature where you can opt to "always keep on this device". However, I would imagine for the AFS it would be a PowerShell that would be managed by IT rather than at the end user level.

  14. Can identity access control be enabled for Mac users on File Shares

It would be good if Mac users could connect to Azure File Shares using AD credentials rather than the storage account key

  15. Webdav Protocol Support for Azure Files

It would be very useful for Azure Files to support webdav, so that end users could mount an Azure Files share locally without going over SMB Port 445

  16. File coping to File storgae to network server

Hi, I have a requirement to
    1- generate a file,
2 - save it in Azure File storage,
3 - copy it into an on-prem server location from Azure file storage, When I m debugging it in local it works fine, But after deploying the application in azure, 3rd step is not working not copying the file from file storage to the server,

Any idea, do I need to whitelist the azure weblink in the server, if so what is the port that I have to open,
    Thanks

  17. Recycle bin for Azure File Shares

Using Azure File Shares as network drives but there's no method for users to recover individual files/folders. This would also enable users to recover their own files, instead of requiring an IT support incident.

Alternatively, if that's not possible, increase the Azure backup frequency for File Shares from 1 day (current shortest period) to hourly

  18. Explorer.exe hangs after deleting storage Account

If you delete the Storage Account with Files Shares in Azure it will make all Windows clients unusable. (one hour freezes of everything that needs explorer.exe)

    Reproduction:

    1. Go to the Azure Portal and create a Storage Account
    2. Create in this new Storage Account a File Share
    3. Follow the instructions in the Azure Protal to connect a Windows Client. (you can use the Windows Sandbox feature, to don't brick your client)
    4. Go back to the Azure Portal and delete the Storage Account
    5. Go back to your client.
    6. In the Client you can run for example "Get-PsDrive" in a PowerShell and you…

  20. Improve azure files monitoring

The possible alerts are really lacking. Some suggestions, from highest prio to lowest:
    - % used alerts instead of GB used vs quota
    - IOPS % used vs configured. This is limited based on size but there is no real way of monitoring it before it's to late, as you can alert on throttling after it happened.
    - Remaining burst credits.
    - Multiresource monitoring. Monitor all shares on all storage accounts with 1 alert.
    - Use GiB as unit instead of GB in the metrics. It's really confusing to monitor 102GB for a 100GiB fileshare. This is important especially due…
